The Day We Got More Than A Half A Foot Of Rain In Homestead

This day – Wednesday June 18TH 2008 – will go down as one of the wettest days in modern day history as officially recorded at Homestead Air Reserve Base Florida.

As of 9 PM EDT an unprecedented 6.07 inches of rain had fallen since 12:01 AM. Nearly 4 inches alone fell between 2 PM and 4 PM this afternoon. An additional 2.40 inches of rain fell yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, so that’s nearly 8½ inches of rain over the course of two days – most of it concentrated during the mid-afternoon hours. Ironically here in my own Homestead neighbourhood about 5 miles from the air base (as the crow flies) less than half that amount of rain has fallen; however, my neighbourhood is not an official weather reporting location. 😮

Remember the 3 FEET of rain over the next 3 months that I suggested for us in the ‘Tuesday Night Grab Bag O’ Thoughts’ ?  We’re about one-fourth of the way there !  We need every single last drop of it (and then some) to pull us out of this extended multi-year drought that we’re in – just not all of it at once !

This is how we roll in June here in South Florida.

What about all that lightening last night/morning?! Am I the only one that was on the edge of my bed from 1-3 a.m. tightly clenching my quilt wondering what the heck was going on..:)

We are getting alot of rain. We can do without the thundering and lightening, as well as the electric going in and out. This week would have made a good pj and dvd days.

Usually I wake up in the middle of the night when there’s a ferocious thunderstorm goin’ on outside, but I slept right through that one (early on Wednesday morning).

UPDATE – We ended this 3-day (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) rain event with 8.74 inches (officially) at Homestead ARB. Up at Miami International Aeropuerto during the same exact time-frame – not even 3.5 inches. The bullseye of atmospheric instability was directly over our air base.
