My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1999

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday April 11TH 1999:

“Fly Away” – Lenny Kravitz
“Praise You” – Fatboy Slim
“I Want It That Way” – The Backstreet Boys
“Give It To You” – Jordan Knight
“Stay The Same” – Joey McIntyre

Lenny Kravitz was one of my favorite singers back at the top of the new millennium, and he got the party started a year early in 1999 with two back-to-back # 1 smash hits on my personal hit music chart at the time. He charted 7 times during that era with these hits – “Fly Away” (# 1 in 1999), “American Woman” (# 1 in 1999), “I Belong To You” (# 39 in 2000), “Again” (# 1 in 2000), “Dig In” (# 4 in 2001), “Where Are We Runnin’ (# 14 in 2004), and “Lady” (# 2 in 2004).

Surprisingly I only have “Again” in my iTunes library. I just went to the iTunes store to add “Fly Away” and “Dig In” to my wish list. They still sound as awesome today in 2019 as they did back in the day. A few times per month I go to my wish list and purchase some of the songs on there. I also listened to “Lady” which was a # 2 smash for me at the end of 2004. For the life of me I listened to it as if I had never heard it before. It spent 17 weeks on my chart; yet, I don’t remember ever hearing it before. I think that maybe that period of time was a low-point for me in my life, and I’ve forgotten everything about it. Salvation occurred 18 months later.

I looked at my chart that was online exactly 20 years ago this weekend – back when I was the proud owner of my original dot-com web site (that was actually worth a lot of money at the time). And then the bubble burst in 2000.

My web site was actually an affiliate of the once-proud CDNow web site – once a billion dollar music store company on the web. CDNow swallowed-up smaller music companies during the late-1990s. And then the bubble burst in 2000.

What a wild and crazy time it was back during the infancy of the World Wide Web. Much of our younger generation today don’t know what the web is, but they sure know how to work an app on a smart phone or a tablet. I’m still on the web, and as history repeats itself – I’ve got my own dot-com web site again. (This blog is at http://www.revchrismday.com.)

I just looked at my web site from exactly 20 years ago this weekend when I owned the massivesmash.com domain name during the peak of the dot-com revolution on the World Wide Web. It looks so primitive compared to today’s modern technology. I used a lot of bright colors back then. It even looks outdated compared to my blander and rather basic web site of today – the one you may be viewing right now – which looks more like 2009 than 2019. I’m sure there are a lot of kids, teens, and even young adults who have no idea what a domain name or the World Wide Web is. “What’s a personal computer ?” Incidentally if you have problems with your smart phone – they can assist you with that. #LOL.

One of those hits I heard today at work, and I hear it almost every day at work because it’s on my iPod Shuffles that play all day every day at my desk at work. It’s the # 3 smash – the Hex Hector Dance Radio Mix of Deborah Cox’s “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here”. It still sounds as fresh today as it did exactly 20 years ago. Spoiler Alert: It would go on to spend 5 consecutive weeks at # 1 in February and March of 1999, so you’ll see that the next time I feature 1999 on a Friday night.

This blog is now going on hiatus for the next 8 days. The same goes for my Twitter and Flickr feeds. It’s #WinterBreak2019. I’ll be back on social media on Super Bowl Sunday February 03RD 2019. I’ll post a new “Sunday Scripture” on that day, and then the next day it’s my brand new Top 10 Christian hit music chart.
