My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1999

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 20TH 1999:

  1. “Livin’ La Vida Loca” – Ricky Martin
  2. “Take My Love” – KromOzone Project
  3. “We Like To Party” – Vengaboys
  4. “Better Days (And The Bottom Drops Out)” – Citizen King
  5. “Someday” – Sugar Ray

Sugar Ray had a great year in 1999. They dominated the pop radio airwaves with their beachy tracks. “Every Morning” entered my chart in late-January, and it spent 32 weeks on it – peaking at # 4 in March. It was my # 3 smash for the entire year. But its follow-up – “Someday” – did even better. It entered my chart in early-June, and it spent 40 weeks on it – peaking at # 2 in July. It was my # 2 smash for the entire year.

“Every Morning” and “Someday” were the first two radio singles from their huge (triple-platinum) album “14:59”. Everyone thought they would be a one-hit-wonder after the breakthrough success of “Fly” in 1997, so they used the last second of their “15 minutes of fame” (hence “14:59”) to release an album that would end up making a lot of money for the band. And we’re still listening to it 20 years later.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday afternoon and Monday night with two more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 122

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 16TH 2019:

  1. “Church (Take Me Back)” – Cochren & Co. [# 2 last week / 17TH week]
  2. “Born Again” – Austin French [1 / 16TH]
  3. “Is He Worthy ?” – Chris Tomlin [5 / 11TH]
  4. “Resurrecting” – Elevation Worship [3 / 10TH]
  5. “Prize Worth Fighting For” – Jamie Kimmett [4 / 10TH]
  6. “Greater Things” – Mack Brock [6 / 5TH]
  7. “Raise A Hallelujah” – Bethel Music [7 / 2ND]
  8. “Till I Found You” – Phil Wickham [9 / 2ND]
  9. “Symphony” – Switch [10 / 2ND]
  10. ”Build My Life” – Pat Barrett [8 / 7TH]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week:
“Do It Again” – Elevation Worship

# 1 Two Years Ago This Week:
“Home” – Chris Tomlin

The oldest song on my chart replaces the 2ND-oldest song on my chart at # 1. After 8 non-consecutive weeks at # 2 Michael Cochren and his friends from South Indiana finally reach the pinnacle with a song that sounds just as fresh today as the day I first heard it on the radio back in February. It’s a song about going to church – something I’ve done nearly every Sunday morning since the first time I went to church as an adult at age 39 on Sunday January 21ST 2007.

This track was nominated for the K-LOVE Fan Award of Breakout Single Of The Year – and deservedly so. I voted for it. It lost the award to “Maybe It’s OK” – another great track – from We Are Messengers.

Here’s the official lyric video of “Church (Take Me Back)”. I can’t stop singing along to it when I hear it – and for hours afterwards:

God has given me the responsibility of serving His church by proclaiming His entire message to you.
(Colossians 1:25)

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. Enjoy this week my friends. I’m on Twitter @ChrisMDay, and I’m also the man behind the tweets for my church @LivingWatersHFL. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him. AMEN.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2004

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 15 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 13TH 2004:

  1. “The Reason” – Hoobastank
  2. “Meant To Live” – Switchfoot
  3. “Don’t Tell Me” – Avril Lavigne
  4. “Naughty Girl” – Beyoncé
  5. “This Love” – Maroon 5

This is the debut edition of my look back at my chart from exactly 15 years ago. I’ll do this every 2ND Friday of the month.

So 15 years ago this weekend I had just turned 37 years old. I was listening to Top 40 music on South Florida’s WHYI / Y-100. (It’s the longest-running continuously-operated Top 40 radio station in North America – almost 46 years.)

Back in 2004 I did not know Jesus Christ, and I wasn’t really paying attention to the lyrics of the songs. But check it out – Switchfoot’s “Meant To Live” is at # 2. It was a crossover pop smash. It spent 31 weeks on my personal hit music chart in 2004, and it was the # 1 smash of the entire year for me.

You see God was getting ready for something big in my life a full two years before salvation commenced for me. I was listening to the music back then, and God had His Word set to the music. I didn’t know what the song meant at the time:

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves ?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves ?
Somewhere we live inside

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday afternoon and Monday night with two more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

# 1 Two Years Ago This Week:
“Live Like You’re Loved” – Hawk Nelson

Last night was a fun night of multitasking – watching the K-LOVE Fan Awards on TBN – and live-tweeting from start to finish. If you missed it – or if you want to watch it again (or DVR it) – then TBN will be re-airing it this upcoming Saturday night at 9 PM PDT / 12 AM (Midnight) EDT.

I cranked-out 27 tweets @ChrisMDay during the 2-hour telecast, and those 27 tweets generated over 3,300 impressions. The tweet with the most impressions (by far – not even close) was the one I did on “The Breakup Song” from Francesca Battistelli as she performed it on the show. The tweet in 2ND place was the one I did on Coach Joe Gibbs. (He won the Sports Impact Award.)

As tweeted last night only 1 of my 8 votes cast actually won. Lauren Daigle won Female Artist Of The Year, and I voted for her for that award. She also won Artist Of The Year. (I voted for MercyMe.)

I wonder if K-LOVE would give me a 3-night package for next year’s Fan Awards in Nashville if I offered my blogging and tweeting services for the duration of the weekend extravaganza ?  I shall ponder on that for awhile.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.
