My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2009

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so I go back 10 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 07TH 2009:

  1. “Open Season” – Air Five
  2. “Mock The Music” – Children 18:3
  3. “The Difference” – Philmont
  4. “Control” – Clemency
  5. “The Unavoidable Battle Of Feeling On The Outside” – FM Static

4 of the 5 songs above were actually the Top 4 songs of all of 2009 on my personal hit music chart. The one lone song that wasn’t was Children 18:3’s “Mock The Music” – which was the # 19 song of the year. 62 songs made my chart in 2009, and that was the final full year of the “Salvation Era” of my chart. It was also the final full year that I listened to Christian music on the radio. Starting in 2010 I “flipped” to classic pop hits of the ’60s and ’70s. That “flip” also ended this personal hit music chart, and it began a 7-year hiatus.

I saw “Weird Al” Yankovic LIVE in concert at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale last night. The near sellout crowd of over 2,500 sang along and applauded as “Weird Al” plowed through over 20 of his hits over the past 36 years during his 90-minute show. He was backed by a full orchestra, and they were also his opening act for about 15 minutes.

Perhaps the most interesting (and longest) song he performed was an awesome track titled, “The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota”. It’s an original song – written by Al himself – but it sounds like a breezy ’70s pop song. (Think Gordon Lightfoot.) I had never heard it before. After the show (and back at the hotel) I went online, and I realized that the song was on his “UHF” movie soundtrack album from 1989 !  It also clocks-in at an amazing 6:50.

“Weird Al” always puts on a great show. I’ve been a fan of him since I was 16 years old in 1983, and WJOK-AM (“All Comedy Radio”) out of Gaithersburg Maryland stunted one night with his debut song “Ricky”. This was only my 2ND “Weird Al” concert. I saw him in 2015 too. I’ll keep seeing him as he keeps performing.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday afternoon and Monday night with two more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

Back In Business

If you’re a regular reader, and you have a very keen eye, and you noticed that my blog posts this past Sunday and Monday looked and felt just a wee-bit different than normal – then you were right. I wrote, compiled, and posted those two blog posts via my iPad (latest model) rather than via my traditional desktop computer system (with monitor, keyboard and mouse). I’m not used to using my new iPad as an actual computer, but I was forced to do just that for several days this week. (It actually worked out much better than expected.)

I had to use my iPad (and iPhone) as computers because I awoke on Sunday morning to the dreaded Windows 10 blue screen of death (“critical process died”) on my traditional computer !  I was also receiving horrifying “1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure” errors upon bootup. That’s right – disaster struck out of nowhere. Nevertheless I remained surprisingly calm, cool, and collective during the ordeal.

The next day (Monday) I took my computer over to Best Buy’s Geek Squad. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional from start to finish, and within 24 hours they had my computer up-and-running with a brand new hard drive installed and all of my folders and files backed-up onto it.

I’m back in business. I have a lot of configuring to do now (since it’s just like using a new computer), but I don’t mind configuring programs. I’ll probably configure them better than ever before. It doesn’t appear that I’ve lost anything at all. It’s a miracle !

The next time disaster strikes with my computer system (or iPad) I shall not hesitate to take it to my new friends over at the Geek Squad. They did good work !

So an all-new weekend of blogging has begun. I’ll be back tomorrow (Friday) night with “My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2009”. Tonight I’m headed up to Fort Lauderdale to see “Weird Al” Yankovic LIVE in concert. I’ve been a fan since I was 16 years old. (Now I’m 52.) I’ll post my review of that show tomorrow night.

♫ I was down on my luck. I was stuck. I was running ’round broken-hearted. I was sinking so fast. I couldn’t last. Falling apart. And You could’ve ran away. Leaving me there in my shame. Leaving me fighting my pain. But You made a better way. ♫

This upcoming Sunday night starting at 9 PM EDT (U.S. East Coast time) I’ll be watching the K-LOVE Fan Awards on TBN, and I’ll be live-tweeting during the show @ChrisMDay.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. Enjoy this week my friends. I’m on Twitter @ChrisMDay, and I’m also the man behind the tweets for my church @LivingWatersHFL. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him. My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1967

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

This week it’s a special. My birthday is coming up next Wednesday, and the festivities have already begun !  I’ll be 52, and so this week I look back at the Top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 when I was born. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 04TH 1967:

  1. “Respect” – Aretha Franklin
  2. “Groovin'” – The Young Rascals
  3. “I Got Rhythm” – The Happenings
  4. “Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)” – Engelbert Humperdinck
  5. “Creeque Alley” – The Mamas & The Papas

Birth ID

As I was entering the world these were the biggest hits on AM pop radio stations from coast to coast. I know 3 of the 5 hits above (from Aretha Franklin, The Young Rascals, and Engelbert Humperdinck. My Grandmom was a huge fan of Engelbert, and she had most of her 33s and 45s. Kids, Teens, & Millennials – 33s were what we called “albums” (multiple songs), and 45s were the “singles” of the day. We went to the local record store to buy our music on vinyl, and we played them on “record players”. #GoodTimes

Starting next Friday night it’s a slight format change for “My Top 5 Hits RETRO”. Every month (starting with June) I’ll be following this rotation:

1ST Friday = 2009 = 10 years ago this weekend
2ND Friday = 2004 = 15 years ago this weekend
3RD Friday = 1999 = 20 years ago this weekend
4TH Friday = 1989 = 30 years ago this weekend

For those months with a 5TH Friday (such as today) I’ll be doing a special.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday afternoon and Monday night with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Until then – enjoy your Saturday. Make great memories that will last a lifetime !
