The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1989

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday February 12TH 1989:

  1. “Straight Up” – Paula Abdul
  2. “The Lover In Me” – Sheena Easton
  3. “She Wants To Dance With Me” – Rick Astley
  4. “When I’m With You” – Sheriff
  5. “Born To Be My Baby” – Bon Jovi

30 years ago this weekend Paula Abdul completed her ascent from relative obscurity to becoming a household name worldwide as her “Straight Up” skyrocketed to # 1 nationwide (and simultaneously on my chart). It fueled one of the most successful debut albums (“Forever Your Girl”) in U.S. pop history. Its award-winning music video was an instant classic for MTV near the end of the peak of the network’s music video era, and it was created and released just a few weeks before its single hit the top of the charts.

Meanwhile on the local party scene a young 21½-year-old wild and crazy version of me occasionally partied the club scene at Confetti on East Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale – where Uptown’s “(I Know) I’m Losing You” – got everyone out on the dance floor as whistles blew, sirens blared, and confetti blasted in the air all around us. Good Times. (A Regions Bank now sits on the former site of that legendary nightclub.)

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday afternoon with “Sunday Scripture” – because Thank God – I’m not the man I used to be back then in 1989. Enjoy your Saturday. Make it memorable.

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 103

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday February 03RD 2019:

  1. “Nobody Loves Me Like You” – Chris Tomlin [# 1 last week / 14TH week on chart]
  2. “Maybe It’s OK” – We Are Messengers [2 / 10TH]
  3. “Best News Ever” – MercyMe [5 / 7TH]
  4. “Even Then” – Micah Tyler [3 / 25TH]
  5. “Red Letters” – Crowder [4 / 7TH]
  6. “Forever On Your Side” – NeedToBreathe [6 / 6TH]
  7. “Known” – Tauren Wells [9 / 26TH]
  8. “Well Done” – The Afters [7 / 16TH]
  9. “God Only Knows” – for King & Country [- / 1ST]
  10. “Never Alone” – Tori Kelly & Kirk Franklin [- / 1ST]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week:
“Gracefully Broken” – Matt Redman Ft. Tasha Cobbs Leonard

No new entries last week for the unpublished chart during my hiatus, and two new entries this week. “God Only Knows” is sort of a surprise follow-up radio single to “joy” for Joel & Luke. I was actually expecting it to be the title track of their new album “Burn The Ships” (which I really like). Maybe it’ll be the next radio single later on in 2019.

One of the many highlights of my trip in the Caribbean last week was walking in to Rusty Fish at the West End of Roatán Honduras, and hearing Christian hit music blaring loud and proud all throughout the store – specifically Jordan Feliz. It put a big smile on my face. Check out their web site to see their mission to save the world in multiple ways.

The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1999

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 24TH 1999:

  1. “One Week” – Barenaked Ladies
  2. “Baby One More Time” – Britney Spears
  3. “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here” – Deborah Cox
  4. “Believe” – Cher
  5. “Thank U” – Alanis Morissette

One of those hits I heard today at work, and I hear it almost every day at work because it’s on my iPod Shuffles that play all day every day at my desk at work. It’s the # 3 smash – the Hex Hector Dance Radio Mix of Deborah Cox’s “Nobody’s Supposed To Be Here”. It still sounds as fresh today as it did exactly 20 years ago. Spoiler Alert: It would go on to spend 5 consecutive weeks at # 1 in February and March of 1999, so you’ll see that the next time I feature 1999 on a Friday night.

This blog is now going on hiatus for the next 8 days. The same goes for my Twitter and Flickr feeds. It’s #WinterBreak2019. I’ll be back on social media on Super Bowl Sunday February 03RD 2019. I’ll post a new “Sunday Scripture” on that day, and then the next day it’s my brand new Top 10 Christian hit music chart.

Thank You all for checking me out online. Enjoy your next 8 days. Be blessed.
