The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1985

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week).

This week I’m going back a little further, as I continue my multiple anniversary weekend. It was exactly 33 years ago (to the date) that I wrote down (via loose-leaf paper, pen and pencil) my very first personal hit music chart in my military dorm room at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire England.

Here’s what the first page of it looked like – chart songs # 20 to # 6:

Nice variety there, and so here it is – the Top 5 – for the week ending Saturday November 30TH 1985:

  1. “We Built This City” – Starship
  2. “Separate Lives” – Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin
  3. “Part Time Lover” – Stevie Wonder
  4. “Say You, Say Me” – Lionel Richie
  5. “Never” – Heart

I was 18½ years old and a brand new resident in a foreign country when I penned that chart above. It was really the next step in a hobby that began about a dozen years earlier during the mid-1970s when I first discovered and fell in love with Top 40 radio and especially “American Top 40” on Sundays with my idol (at the time) Casey Kasem. I wanted to grow up and be just like him. The Billboard Hot 100 was my bible back then. I began reading and studying it at my local public library.

This paper edition of my personal hit music chart lasted nearly 7 years. Starship’s “We Built This City” was the first of 174 # 1 hits during that time-span. After a 3-year hiatus I began a second edition of this hobby, and it was all-electronic (via Excel spreadsheet) and eventually online and worldwide. That edition lasted for over 14 years. During the Summer of 2006 my chart flipped from Secular pop music to Christian pop music to coincide with the start of my salvation.

So Happy 33RD Anniversary to my very first personal hit music chart. What a hobby of a lifetime !

It’s halftime. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with my remaining two blog posts for this weekend. I’ll be celebrating another anniversary come Sunday. Enjoy your Saturday. Thank You for your time.

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 93

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday November 25TH 2018:

  1. “Even Then” – Micah Tyler [# 2 last week / 15TH week on chart]
  2. “Only Jesus” – Casting Crowns [1 / 13TH]
  3. “Nobody Loves Me Like You” – Chris Tomlin [4 / 4TH]
  4. “Known” – Tauren Wells [5 / 16TH]

  8. “You Say” – Lauren Daigle [8 / 13TH]
  9. “Stand In Your Love” – Josh Baldwin [9 / 8TH]
  10. “joy” – for King & Country [- / 1ST]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week – “Different” – Micah Tyler

Micah Tyler scores his 2ND consecutive # 1 smash here on my chart, as “Even Then” rises to the top spot. It’s the follow-up to his long-running “Different” which was # 1 exactly one year ago.

In a somewhat surprising debut – for King & Country enters my chart at # 10 with their long-running # 1 smash on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart – “joy”. It’s slowly descending the national chart (currently at # 7) in its 27TH week. It also crossed-over onto mainstream (secular) Top 40 radio stations – particularly those that lean more adult. I’ll be seeing them LIVE in concert in 2½ weeks !

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. Next weekend it’s back to 4 blog posts on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

# 1 One Year Ago This Week – “Different” – Micah Tyler

Casting Crowns remain at # 1 for the 10TH week in a row in a rather quiet week on my chart. Nationally on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart Lauren Daigle remains at # 1 for the 10TH week in a row.

I’m currently on vacation in cold and cloudy and dark and gloomy Ohio. It’s one of the coldest Novembers of the past 100 years, and I just happen to be here for half of it. This is my 10TH day here, and I think I’ve seen the sun for a small portion on about 3 days. A few days ago we had fog, rain, freezing rain, ice, and snow – all in a matter of hours. We hit 52°F / 11°C yesterday. It was and will be the only day in the 50s while I’m here. I’m ready for the return of the 70s and 80s back home in South Florida this weekend !

Thanksgiving Day is just 3 days away. May you enjoy the day with family, friends, fellowship, food, and football.

I give thanks to you – O Lord my God – with my whole heart, and I will glorify Your name forever. (Psalm 86:12, ESV)

Aside from this flagship Monday night post my blog remains on hiatus until Sunday November 25TH 2018. I’ll return with “Sunday Scripture” and my new chart next Monday. I’ll return to 4 blogs per weekend starting on Thursday November 29TH 2018.
