The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1988

  1. Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley
  2. Need You Tonight – INXS
  3. Father Figure – George Michael
  4. Foolish Beat – Debbie Gibson
  5. Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen

These were my Top 5 hits exactly 30 years ago this weekend – Sunday February 28TH 1988.

On “American Top 40” Casey Kasem revealed the new # 1 smash from coast to coast as “Father Figure” from George Michael.

Casey Kasem was my idol growing up. I began listening to his countdown during the late-1970s on WPGC-FM (Washington D.C.) and WCAO-AM (Baltimore MD). I lived between the two cities. I’d write down the songs as he counted them down. 40 years ago this Sunday Casey revealed “Stayin’ Alive” from The Bee Gees as the # 1 smash in the U.S.A.

I didn’t get to be America’s favorite radio deejay as I envisioned all of those years ago, but I get to do this on social media.

I’ve been producing my own personal weekly hit music chart off and on for the past 30+ years. Next Friday it’s back to the future – to 10 years ago in 2008.

  10. “Masterpiece” – Danny Gokey [6 / 6TH]

“Gracefully Broken” becomes the 4TH smash hit in a row to spend 4 weeks at # 1, but it may not be done. Will it spend a 5TH week at # 1 ?  We’ll find out next Monday when I present my next TOP 10 chart.

This is the first anniversary of this latest incarnation of my weekly personal hit music chart. It’s also the first anniversary of me discovering K-LOVE on the radio. I found out about its existence on Presidents’ Day Night last year in a Bartow Florida hotel room. The next morning as I drove southward I eventually picked-up their 75,000 watt Fort Myers Florida signal at 88.7 FM. Close to Lake Okeechobee I picked-up their 100,000 watt signal at 89.7 FM which ironically is located just 5 miles away from my home (as the crow flies) high atop a 1,000-foot transmitter. (I can actually see the transmitter from here.)

Earlier today on Twitter I wished K-LOVE a Happy 1ST Anniversary, and they replied back quickly. I’ve listened to them every day over the past year, and that will continue into a 2ND year. (You can follow me on Twitter @ChrisMDay.)

The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1998

  1. Sugar Cane – The Space Monkeys
  2. Are You Jimmy Ray ? – Jimmy Ray
  3. I Want You Back – ‘N Sync
  4. Can’t Keep My Hands Off You – React
  5. As Long As You Love Me – The Backstreet Boys

These were my Top 5 hits exactly 20 years ago this weekend – Sunday February 15TH 1998.

Aside from the hottest boy bands in the land (in 1998) there were 3 obscure one-hit-wonders topping my chart back then – and a lot of dancing (and partying) for this 30-year-old at the time. The late-1990s were a fun time for me, but in hindsight it was the continuation of a long and steady descent in my life both professionally and privately. That descent would continue for 13 years until my Lord And Savior Jesus Christ stepped in and saved and rescued me during the Summer of 2006. It’s good to look back at where I came from – knowing that I’m in a much better place today. I see God’s light now.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 (ESV) – Say not, “Why were the former days better than these ?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

I’ve been producing my own personal weekly hit music chart off and on for the past 30+ years. Next Friday I’ll go back another 10 years to the final weekend of February of 1988.

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 52

  1. “Gracefully Broken” – Matt Redman Ft. Tasha Cobbs Leonard [# 1 last week / 9TH week on chart]
  2. “Bleed The Same” – Mandisa Ft. TobyMac [3 / 10TH]
  3. “No One Like Our God” – Lincoln Brewster [4 / 5TH]
  4. “Miracle” – Unspoken [2 / 8TH]
  5. “Witness” – Jordan Feliz [7 / 3RD]
  6. “Masterpiece” – Danny Gokey [6 / 5TH]
  7. “Come To The Table” – Sidewalk Prophets [8 / 2ND]
  8. “Resurrection Power” – Chris Tomlin [- / 1ST]
  9. “Fear Is A Liar” – Zach Williams [- / 1ST]
  10. “When We Pray” – Tauren Wells [- / 1ST]

3 new entries this week – led by Chris Tomlin with his follow-up to his long-running # 1 smash from last year – “Home”. Although it only spent 2 weeks at # 1 it was on my Top 10 for 20 weeks. We’ll see if “Resurrection Power” has staying power like that. Zach Williams is back with his follow-up to “Old Church Choir”. It spent a couple of months at # 1 on national weekly Christian music charts based on radio airplay, but it only managed a # 2 peak (for a single week) on my chart. Tauren Wells enters at # 10 with his latest “When We Pray” which is slowly growing on me due to its powerful message that’ll preach – (“… all the world starts changing – when the church starts praying …”).

Here’s me preaching yesterday at Living Waters Full Gospel Church in Homestead Florida. That’s the name of my sermon right there – “Faith & Patience”. It was mostly based on James 1:1-6.

Faith & Patience

James 1:2-4 (NLT) – Dear brothers and sisters – when troubles come your way – consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested – your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed – you will be perfect and complete – needing nothing.
