The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1988

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday August 21ST 1988:

  1. “Baby I Love Your Way / Freebird” – Will To Power
  2. “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy)” – The Information Society
  3. “Staying Together” – Debbie Gibson
  4. “It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man” – Rick Astley
  5. “Monkey” – George Michael

30 years ago this weekend the 21-year-old edition of me lived 7½-miles away (by road) from where I live today, and I worked about a mile away from where I work today on the same United States Air Force installation that I worked back then. A 10-speed bike was my only form of transportation in 1988. Today it’s a 2018 Honda Civic.

By the Summer of 1988 I had made the decision to reenlist in the USAF for another 4 years in uniform. Now I’ve got over 33 years of Federal service in, and I plan to retire 5 years from now. I also plan to move away from here 5 years from now.

But while those are my plans – they may not be God’s plans for me. On this 12TH Anniversary of the start of my salvation I’ve figured it out by now. Go with God’s plans. They are plans for good – and not for disaster – to give me a future and a hope.

It’s halftime. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with my remaining two blogs for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Make memories of a lifetime !

My Fantastic Journey: 12TH Anniversary

This weekend I celebrate the 12TH Anniversary of my fantastic journey. My salvation began without warning. It wasn’t planned. I didn’t see it coming. But there it was. I was being rescued and saved from the darkness, and I didn’t even realize it – in the beginning. (It took me a few weeks to figure out God’s miracles for me.)

Early in the morning towards the latter part of August of 2006 during a typical 7¼-mile drive from home to work (in Homestead Florida) I flipped the radio dial off of Y-100 (Mainstream / Secular TOP 40) and I randomly discovered CALL-FM (Christian TOP 40).

Little did I know that such a mundane moment as changing the radio station in my car would signal the beginning of God’s Fantastic Journey for me. Little did I know that my previous life was about to come to a gradual end. Little did I know that I was about to be saved and reborn onto a new Life.

For you have been born again. Your new Life did not come from your earthly parents because the life they gave you will end in death. But this new Life will last forever because it comes from the eternal living word of God. As the prophet says, “People are like grass that dies away. Their beauty fades as quickly as the beauty of wildflowers. The grass withers, and the flowers fall away. But the Word of the Lord will last forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:23-25 NLT)

On that morning when salvation began – Jonah33’s “Desensitized” rocked my radio:

I’m growing numb.
But what is wrong, and what is right ?
When did I start to lose this fight ?
Somehow I lost track of who you are.

I’m so amazed at what sin’s become.
I’m so ashamed that I’ve grown so numb.
Somehow I became desensitized.
I don’t want to be desensitized.

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 78

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday August 12TH 2018:

  1. “Dream Small” – Josh Wilson [# 1 last week / 11TH week on chart]
  2. “Do It Again” – Elevation Worship [3 / 15TH]
  3. “Grace Got You” – MercyMe [2 / 19TH]
  4. “Who You Say I Am” – Hillsong Worship [7 / 3RD]
  5. “The Breakup Song” – Francesca Battistelli [6 / 5TH]
  6. “Everything” – TobyMac [- / 1ST]
  7. “Known” – Tauren Wells [- / 1ST]
  8. “Heaven On Earth” – Stars Go Dim [8 / 4TH]
  9. “Wherever I Go” – Dan Bremnes [10 / 6TH]
  10. “Living Hope” – Phil Wickham [9 / 6TH]

We lost Pat Barrett and Chris Tomlin this week. “The Way (New Horizon)” and “Resurrection Power” both fall off my chart after a combined 40 weeks. Both artists were headliners at “Worship Night In America” which I attended in April here in South Florida, and they performed both songs. Tauren Wells was also a headliner on that Glorious night. His new song “Known” debuts this week at # 7.

TobyMac is back too. He debuts at # 6 with his latest hit “Everything”. I really like this song. It reminds me of an up-tempo 1980s-era Pop / R & B song. I wasn’t a big fan of his previous effort “I Just Need U.” (which also sounded like a 1980s-era Pop / R & B track), so I’m glad he’s back on-track with a song that I can hum, sing, and dance to. This one could go Top 3 next week !

This concludes my 4 blogs this weekend. I’ll be back next weekend with all-new blogs on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest. Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to win souls for Christ. Enjoy this week. May the LORD bless you and keep you.

Sunday Scripture

On those days that I preach a sermon to my church family I intentionally don’t discuss it with anyone beforehand, so that everyone who hears it will hear it for the first time – at the same time. I always look forward to the reactions post-sermon – whether positive and encouraging or negative and constructive.

Today I preached a sermon titled “Sweet & Sour”. It was about telling the truth, and saying just the right words at just the right time to just the right person who needs to hear those words.

Telling lies, spreading rumors, sharing gossip, and speaking maliciously of someone or something are all sins of the tongue. These do not represent what God has placed on our heart. If we are filled with the enemy’s hate on the inside – then our talk will turn bitter or sour.

If we are filled with God’s love on the inside – then our talk will be of joy and sweetness. Our words will reflect The Holy Spirit that’s inside each of us. It will reflect the fruits of the Holy Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

… For whatever is in your heart determines what you say. A good person produces good words from a good heart, and an evil person produces evil words from an evil heart. And I tell you this. You must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you – or condemn you.” (Matthew 12:34c-37)

During a post-service lunch at a local Chinese Restaurant some of us ate “Sweet & Sour”, as we discussed my sermon (among other topics). My sermon had a positive impact on my lunchmates that produced instant results and reflections. It may have changed some of our lives forever. Hopefully it will change the lives of those that are close to us – who hear our talk and see our walk. That’s God’s Glory in action.
