Gary Numan

Gary Numan. Cars

Gary Numan’s iconic song “Cars” was released as his debut single exactly 40 years ago last month. I consider it to be one of the greatest pop songs ever made. It still sounds great today, and it’s been in heavy rotation on my iPod Shuffles at work for many years now. In fact it’s garnered an amazing 1,096 plays in just a little over the past 9 years. I’ve pretty much heard it about every 3 days since 2010.

Here in the U.S. it was a big radio hit during the Spring and Summer of 1980, and it hit the Top 10 nationally. I don’t remember liking it all that much as a nearly 13-year-old. When I was living and working in England it was re-released as a single, and it hit # 2 on my chart at the start of October of 1987. As a 20-year-old I finally appreciated the unique way-ahead-of-its-time track.

TODAY – September 12TH 1987 – marks the 32ND anniversary that I saw Gary Numan LIVE in concert at the Oxford Apollo in Oxford England !  West Won was his opening act. Anyone ever heard of them ?

You can check out the early music video for “Cars” (from 1979) over on YouTube. That’s the music video – before we even knew what exactly a music video was. That’s the music video – nearly 2 years before the advent of MTV. (They started as a 24-7 music video cable network.)

Gary Numan is 61 now, and he’s still very active. Check out his official web site.

    [# 1 last week / 6TH week on chart]
  2. “Fear No More” – Building 429 [2 / 6TH]
  3. “Dead Man Walking” – Jeremy Camp [3 / 8TH]
  4. “(Love Is The) Reason” – Unspoken [7 / 8TH]

  10. “Power” – We Are Messengers [10 / 3RD]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week:
“Who You Say I Am” – Hillsong Worship

# 1 Two Years Ago This Week:
“Broken Things” – Matthew West

Well Summer is over (here in the U.S.), and now we’re in to the final 17 weekly hit music charts of 2019. I’ll end the year on New Year’s Eve with “My Top 19 Of 2019” and a look back at the year that was.

There are no new entries this week, but next week look for Zach Williams to enter with his “Rescue Story”. It’s receiving significant radio airplay on K-LOVE, and the song is growing on me. I love its message of salvation. There’s also a good chance that “Echo” – the soulful new song from Elevation Worship (featuring Tauren Wells) could claim a spot on my Top 10.

Finally Unspoken return to # 1 nationally at Christian pop radio. “(Love Is The) Reason” is their first # 1 smash nationwide. They came close in 2014 with their # 2 hit “Start A Fire”. Unspoken should not be confused with Spoken – a different Christian band that actually scored with 3 hits on my chart during the original 2006 to 2010 Salvation Era. They actually remade the Cyndi Lauper classic “Time After Time”, and that song entered my chart during my 2ND week of salvation !

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. Enjoy this week my friends. I’m on Twitter @ChrisMDay, and I’m also the man behind the tweets for my church @LivingWatersHFL. May the God of hope fill you completely with joy and peace as you trust in Him.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2009

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so I go back 10 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday September 06TH 2009:

  1. “Where To Start” – Philmont
  2. “Forget And Not Slow Down” – Relient K
  3. “Open Season” – Air Five
  4. “We Can Try” – Between The Trees
  5. “Code Name: Raven” – House Of Heroes

What can I say about Relient K. They were one of my favorite bands during the Salvation Era of my chart from 2006 to 2010. They scored with 8 hits on my chart, and the first one – “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” – actually broke onto my chart before I was rescued and saved by Christ !  You may remember back towards the end of 2005 when it crossed-over onto Mainstream Top 40 radio and became a Top 25 hit. It was also a U.S. Gold smash – having sold over 500,000 copies.

Relient K wouldn’t cross-over much more onto the Mainstream Top 40 radio scene; however, “Forget And Not Slow Down” – # 2 exactly 10 years ago on my chart – did manage significant radio airplay on some pop stations particularly in the center of the nation and some southern markets.

Of course the lyrics of every Relient K song meant a lot to me once my salvation in Christ had started – even (and especially) their debut smash – “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been”.

I’m sorry for – the person I became
I’m sorry that – it took so long for me to change
I’m ready to – try and never become that way again
‘Cause who I am hates who I’ve been
Who I am hates who I’ve been

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with two more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Summer Of 2019

15 weekly hit music charts and 24 positive and encouraging hits (same as last Summer) have created this cumulative hit music chart of my Top 10 hits of the Summer Of 2019 based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. Here it is – from Memorial Day Weekend (last Sunday of May) to Labor Day Weekend (first Sunday of September):

  1. “Raise A Hallelujah” – Bethel Music
  2. “Resurrecting” – Elevation Worship
  3. “Prize Worth Fighting For” – Jamie Kimmett
  4. “Till I Found You” – Phil Wickham
  5. “Church (Take Me Back)” – Cochren & Co.
  6. “Greater Things” – Mack Brock
  7. “Symphony” – Switch
  8. “Born Again” – Austin French
  9. “Is He Worthy” – Chris Tomlin
  10. “Nobody (But Jesus)” – Casting Crowns Ft. Matthew West

Elevation Worship owned last summer’s # 1 smash with “Do It Again”, and they nearly did it again with this summer’s smash, “Resurrecting”. It fell 10 points shy of the # 1 spot for this summer.

Matthew West was # 5 last Summer with “All In”, and his collaboration with Casting Crowns was my 10TH biggest hit of this Summer.

It’s 2 in a row for Chris Tomlin as well. “Resurrection Power” was # 6 last Summer.

Unlike last Summer no song spent all 15 weeks of Summer on my chart. Elevation Worship’s “Do It Again” did it last Summer, and their “Resurrecting” came the closest this Summer with 14 out of 15 weeks on my chart.

Years from now when I look back at this chart I’ll remember the good times that I enjoyed during these 100 days of summer. This was the soundtrack of my summer.

If you’re not familiar with one or any of these songs then use Google or YouTube to check them out. Enjoy the music, but listen to the words. The words of these songs represent God’s Word. Any one of these songs can change your life forever. God used music to rescue and save me from the darkness during the Summer Of 2006.

He has given me a new song to sing – a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what He has done, and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. (Psalm 40:3 NLT)

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.
