The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

It’s just past 1 PM CST here in North Texas as I begin compiling this post, and in just about 9 hours I’ll be heading to bed for the final time here. I’ve got an early wake-up call in the morning of 4:30 AM, and I hope to be on the road no later than 90 minutes after that. I hope to enjoy a peaceful and quiet drive southeastward into Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida during the day tomorrow. I’m driving nearly 60% of the way to home tomorrow, and then the remaining 40% of the drive will be on Sunday.

I’m looking forward to returning to my normal routine come Monday morning. It’s always a lot of fun to go on vacation, but I definitely appreciate what I have back at home and at work so much more when I’ve been away for awhile.

This week on my ‘Disco Party’ I’ve got a dude that was born in Glasgow Scotland in 1950, but as a young chap he moved down under to Australia where he’s been ever since. He’s John Paul Young, and back in the early-1970s he played the role of the High Priest Annas in the Australian production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. In 1978 he scored his only worldwide hit, and it was a memorable Disco smash on the radio, at the nightclubs, and at the roller disco.

Here he is – John Paul Young – with his classic “Love Is In The Air”:

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

Disco Ball

31 years ago towards the end of 1978 Disco singer-songwriter Alicia Bridges was the star of one of the hottest hits on the radio and in the roller discos. She co-wrote this long-running gold-certified TOP 5 Disco smash that spent more than 7 months on the Billboard Hot 100.

Here now are the spiritual lyrics to “I Love The Nightlife (Disco ‘Round)”:

And here’s Alicia Bridges performing it via an early-form music video:

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

It hardly ever snows in Miami, but one time it did – and it made International news headlines. It was the notorious Winter of 1977 – statistically one of the coldest, windiest, snowiest, and most brutal winter seasons in modern recorded history east of the Mississippi River. Below freezing temperatures invaded virtually the entire great state of Florida, and snow dusted the ground deep into South Florida. Flurries were swirling in the air as far south as Miami, Miami Beach, and even Homestead on the morning of the 19TH of January of 1977. Snow mixed with freezing rain was even observed in The Bahamas on that historic morning !

The next day Jimmy Carter was inaugurated as our 39TH President Of The United States on a cold and sunny day in Washington D.C.

High atop the Billboard Hot 100 during both of these momentous events was this gem from British singer-songwriter Leo Sayer. It’s the biggest smash of his still-going 36-year music career, and it’s a Grammy Award winner. Here’s his gold-certified # 1 Disco smash – “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”.

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

My dear friend Ela O. always looks forward to Friday nights here on the big blue bell-bottom blog. It’s her chance to reminisce about the good old days – back when she and her young husband totally ruled the disco scene some 3o to 35 years ago.

Before we reach this week’s selection – how about a word from our sponsour:

That’s ’20 Top Hits’ by 20 fake artists !  Order before Midnight tonight !

Good stuff there – but check this out. Back during the long and hot Summer of 1974 a little group that you may have heard of – The Commodores – made their U.S. pop chart debut with a BANG !  It was actually an all instrumental jam that totally kicked-it on the funky disco ’round. Check out a young 25-year-old Lionel Richie – afro and all. Also pay attention to the clavinet work. It sounds like a rapid fire “Machine Gun” !
