The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1998

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday October 18TH 1998:

  1. “Tearin’ Up My Heart” – ‘N Sync
  2. “Take Me Away” – Mix Factory
  3. “Jumper” – Third Eye Blind
  4. “One Week” – Barenaked Ladies
  5. “The Way” – Fastball

Third Eye Blind scored 6 Top 20 hits on my chart during the late-1990s and into the 21ST Century:  “Semi-Charmed Life” (# 1 in 1997), “How’s It Going To Be” (# 1 in 1998), “Jumper” (# 3 in 1998), “Never Let You Go” (# 1 in 2000), “Deep Inside Of You” (# 20 in 2000), and “10 Days Late” (# 7 in 2000).

“One Week” spent one week at # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on this weekend exactly 20 years ago.

It’s halftime. I’ll be back on Sunday with the highlights of my sermon, and then on Monday it’s my brand new Top 10 music chart. Enjoy your Saturday. Be safe. Have fun. Love all. Live life.

40 Years Ago Tonight

It’s the 18TH of October of 2018, and 40 years ago in 1978 this day was a Wednesday. One of my favorite TV shows of all-time – “The Jeffersons” – kicked-off the CBS prime-time line-up at 8 PM with the episode “George’s Dream”. (His dream was a nightmare about 18 years into the future – a future that didn’t involve him.)

On the radio Exile’s “Kiss You All Over” and Nick Gilder’s “Hot Child In The City” were two of the hottest pop smashes from coast to coast, and both of those songs are currently active on my workplace iPod Shuffles. I hear those two songs almost every day !  I still sing along to them.

40 years ago I was 11 years old and in the 6TH grade at Magnolia Elementary School in Lanham Maryland – located just a few minutes away from my house by foot right in my own neighborhood. I attended Kindergarten there (1972-1973) as well as 3RD through 6TH grades (1975-1979).

Here’s a photo of my Elementary School as it looked 3 summers ago when I visited the area:

I was a Boy Scout in 1978, so if I had a Boy Scout meeting on that Wednesday night then I probably didn’t see that episode of “The Jeffersons”. I know that I’ve seen it in reruns though.

Tomorrow night the RETRO continues, but 20 years later in 1998.

Sunday Scripture

IMG_3279

Today – the 2ND Sunday of October – is traditionally recognized as Pastor Appreciation Day, and we didn’t forget. We honored our Lead Pastor Bob and his lovely wife Julie with a card, a gift, a song, and a gratitude of thanks for all they do to lead us to Christ.

Incidentally we’re about to embark on a major renovation of our sanctuary that you see in the photo above. That includes doubling the size of our stage and raising it by about 9 inches, replacing the large pulpit with a modern acrylic podium, completely redoing the stage background with dark covering / shading, purchasing large flat-screen TVs for both ends of the stage, removing all of the ceiling fans and replacing all of the lighting above, replacing all of the wooden pews with portable chairs, and replacing the red carpet. The entire color scheme of our sanctuary will change to a darker tone. Needless to say our sanctuary will be a construction zone for the next many months, but once it’s all done we’ll have the look and feel of a 21ST Century Church. God’s church. God’s glory.

I’ve updated my SERMONS page here on my blog site. I believe I’m preaching my sermon on Cain & Abel next Sunday titled “Wander & Create”. I’m also writing my next sermon after that on the first 10 verses of James 4. That’s titled “War & Peace”. Here’s an excerpt that I wrote last night:

The devil wants to be closer to you – just like he used to be. He wants to be in your heart – just like he used to be. He wants to manipulate you – just like he used to do. He wants you to carry out his sinful actions – his dirty deeds – just like you used to do.

You must resist the devil and his temptations. You must declare war on the devil. When you do – he will flee from you – temporarily. Oh he’s not giving up on you. The devil never gives up. He’ll just go away for a little while, and then eventually come up and come back with a new strategy that exploits your vulnerabilities – your weaknesses.

That’s why you must submit yourself to God. Declare God as the sole authority in your life. When you do that you draw closer to God, and you move further away from Satan.

I like several verses in Psalm 16:

Keep me safe – O God, for I have come to You for refuge. (Psalm 16:1)
I said to the LORD, “You are my Master !  All the good things I have are from You.” (Psalm 16:2)
I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. (Psalm 16:8)
