My “Dawson’s Creek” Addiction

I have a confession to make. In my previous life I was addicted to “Dawson’s Creek” for 5½ long seasons. It started quite innocently enough on a Tuesday night in January of 1998 (with the pilot episode), and I was hooked immediately. I endured some 128 episodes of the teen drama as I followed the continuing life and times of Capeside’s Dawson, Pacey, Joey, Jen, Jack, and Andie. Thankfully in May of 2003 the series came to a fitting close and my Wednesday nights returned to normalcy.

I pledged never again to get hooked on a cheesy teen drama. I obviously didn’t learn my lesson. Now I’m hooked on this show on ABC Family. Fresh new episodes start back up this upcoming Monday night at 8 PM EST !

TiVo Changed Kelly’s Life

More than 25 years ago I mastered the fine art of programming a VCR. It changed my life forever. I did it mainly so that I could tape Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Saturday Night Live ! late at night while I slept.

Since then I’ve been a self-admitted VCR junkie. Nowadays I’ve got 3 of them. They even have names – Arthur, Barney, and Charley – as in ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’.

Arthur, Barney, and Charley are usually hard at work keeping busy every night, although they each get nights off occasionally. TONIGHT Arthur and Charley are working the night shift while Barney has the night off.

I even have an elabourate EXCEL spreadsheet that I utilize to track what recorded shows are on each of my active videocassettes (over 70 of them).

TiVo changed Kelly‘s life. It also changed a lot of lives of people that I know. Me and one of my former co-worker friends used to laugh hysterically early in the morning at some of her too-funny TiVo experiences. She would intentionally set her TiVo to tape a History Channel special on the Persian Gulf War, and then over the next few weeks she would end up getting shows like “Gomer Pyle, USMC”, “Hogan’s Heroes”, and “McHale’s Navy”. She would set her TiVo to record a Travel Channel show on the best cruises to take around the world, and she would eventually end up with a dozen “Love Boat” reruns. Her TiVo also decided that she was a HUGE Patrick Duffy and Suzanne Somers fan, so she ended up with an entire season of “Step By Step” on her TiVo !  Basically TiVo was deciding for her what she was going to watch rather than her deciding for herself.

I am proud to report that I am the ‘decider’. I am in sole control of what gets recorded by each of my VCRs, and Arthur, Barney, and Charley hardly ever let me down (although Arthur is starting to show signs of old age). He occasionally wheezes. He can be replaced. Allison is waiting in the wings.

My Fantastic Journey: It’s In The Lyrics

When I first heard the following song on the radio I thought that it was really cool sounding. It’s got a retro-1980s Duran Duran feel to it. When I started to really listen to it and study the lyrics I got the chills. It’s further proof that God is guiding me on this fantastic journey and keeping me intrigued via the music of my Life:

“Fighting For Your Heart (Let It Go)” – After Edmund

Someone tore apart your heart.
Someone let you down – down on the ground.
Someone ripped away your faith.
Someone let you bleed – forgot what you need.

It’s not easy movin’ on.
No it’s not easy movin’ on.

Oh. Let it go. Say goodbye. Call this an emergency.
That’s fighting for your heart to be free.
Don’t waste another tear of sorrow here on yesterday’s emergency.
That’s fighting for your heart to be free.

Someone held you from your dreams.
Someone pushed you out – out of the crowd.
Somebody stole away your hope.
Someone ran off with your heart – you’re alone in the dark.

{REPEAT / FADE}

(You can hear the entire song on their MySpace site.)

Tuesday Night Grab Bag O’ Thoughts

1.  For the past few months I’ve been spammed via telephone and old-fashioned USPS mail from the obviously well-funded ‘Yes For A Greater Miami-Dade‘ group in a dire effort to get my valuable ‘YES’ vote on the upcoming county question regarding allowing slot machines at three existing horse and dog tracks and Jai Alai Frontons. TODAY I received a giant tube in my mailbox that contained another brightly-coloured advertisement in support of their effort, a nice ink pen, and a 41 cent stamp to use to mail in my absentee ballot. The joke is on them. I’m voting ‘NO’ for this question. I just believe that there are better things to do with money rather than throwing them into slot machines all in the name of greed.

2.  I turned off my A.C. on the night of New Year’s Day, and it stayed off until yesterday afternoon (Monday January 07TH). ‘It just got too warm in here’, exclaimed me at the time. I turned it off again before I went to sleep last night, and it stayed off until I got home from work this afternoon. I think it’s pretty much on now day and night for the rest of the week as temperatures outside approach and exceed the 80°F mark.

3.  I was tailgated severely for about a minute or two on my way home from work this afternoon. What are the chances that it would be a big SUV / minivan doing the dirty deed ?  They are usually high !  It’s always a sincere pleasure of mine to counteract a tailgater by slowing down to exactly the posted speed limit.

4.  An obvious sign of an out-of-control speeder who is as guilty as sin ?  It’s when he / she slams his / her brakes on when suddenly a vehicle by the side of the road with flashing lights atop it comes into view – even when the vehicle is merely a tow truck !

5.  It’s hard to believe that once upon a time in a faraway land called ‘1993’ I actually utilized a 2400 baud modem to dial-out on with my computer. Nowadays I’m cruising at speeds of up to 6.0 Mbps – or up to 2,500 times faster than what I was dealing with way back then in prehistoric computer times. Thank You Comcast !

6.  This morning I had one of those unique cravings that I occasionally get for tuna fish. I took care of it by going to Subway and getting a footlong tuna fish sub with swiss cheese (yum), lettuce, tomato, and pickle. Subway. Eat Fresh.

7.  I wish I knew a good reputable interior decorator within the local area. That person could go to work on my home almost immediately. I have a ‘wish list’ of enhancements that I would like to make to my home. The addition of ceiling fans is high atop that list.

8.  My old-fashioned VHS VCRs will be working overtime tonight taping an estimated 10 hours or more of quality television programming for viewing at a later date. While all of that is going on I’m planning to watch the Homestead City Council Meeting from last night. It’s one of the greatest reality shows on television !

9.  I currently weigh 169.5 pounds. Now we’re getting closer to my ideal weight of 165 pounds !

10.  And now a ‘Tuesday Night Grab Bag O’ Thoughts’ EXCLUSIVE:  I’ve been keeping this a secret for the past 2½-days. I haven’t told a soul. It is now time to reveal it to the world. Here we go. This past Sunday morning (bright and early at around 7:45 AM) at Life Pointe Church I severely sprained my lower back muscle(s) when I attempted to pick-up a large plastic container of Hospitality material that was much heavier than I anticipated. I instantly felt the pain, and I was in moderate to severe pain for pretty much all of Sunday and Monday. The pain is starting to subside today, and hopefully by tomorrow it will be all gone. This is not the first time that this has happened doing the same exact thing. I keep forgetting that I’m 40-years-old (pushing 41). Usually I feel like I’m in my mid-to-late-20s. Over the past couple of days I felt like I was in my mid-to-late-40s !  I’ll be OK.
