My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1996

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 25 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday November 10TH 1996:

  1. “Head Over Feet” – Alanis Morissette
  2. “One And One” – Robert Miles
  3. “Do You Miss Me ?” – Jocelyn Enriquez
  4. “Let’s Make A Night To Remember” – Bryan Adams
  5. “If It Makes You Happy” – Sheryl Crow

I’m gonna do this “Mini-Thoughts” style. Longtime readers of my blog know what that means:

  • Alanis was HUGE back in the mid-to-late-1990s.
  • She scored with 9 hits on my chart through 1999.
  • “Head Over Feet” was her 3RD (and final) # 1 smash (for me).
  • Everyone remembers “Children” from Robert Miles.
  • It was a European dance smash that broke-through the U.S. market.
  • But “One And One” was less successful.
  • It did break-through here in Miami; hence, it’s # 2 peak on my chart.
  • British Trance singer Maria Nayler performed the vocals on “One And One”.
  • “Children” could be considered as one of the first trance hits on my chart.
  • “One And One” – the 2ND trance hit.
  • Trance music would later explode and take over my chart in 2002. #EDM
  • “Do You Miss Me” was a regional hit in dance-favored U.S. radio markets.
  • It was a long-lasting smash here in dance-friendly Miami.
  • I think Y-100 played it 10 times a day for more than half-a-year.
  • It spent 21 weeks on my chart – including its first 19 in my Top 10.
  • Like myself – Jocelyn Enriquez is part Filipino.
  • She was only 21 when “Do You Miss Me ?” was a hit on the radio.
  • Nowadays Jocelyn is a born-again Christian !
  • In fact she’s a Worship Pastor alongside her husband of 22 years.
  • They serve at Calvary Chapel Of San Antonio (Texas).
  • It’s awesome to discover that a mainstream pop artist follows Christ now.

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 30 years ago to November 1991. “I’m so glad you’re my girl. I’ll do anything for you. Call you every night, and give you flowers too. I thank the Lord for you, and think about you all the time. I ask Him everyday that you’ll forever be mine.” That Top 5 hit will be featured next week. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

This is the end of an abbreviated blog weekend, as #SundayScripture and #Top10Monday are on hiatus for the rest of this month of November. They will both return during the 1ST weekend of December. I’ll be back next Thursday and Friday with 2 more blog posts.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1991

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday October 20TH 1991:

  1. “Do Anything” – Natural Selection
  2. “Wind Of Change” – The Scorpions
  3. “I’ll Be There” – The Escape Club
  4. “It Hit Me Like A Hammer” – Huey Lewis And The News
  5. “Hole Hearted” – Extreme

Natural Selection were a band out of Minneapolis Minnesota who sounded very much like Prince – at least they did on “Do Anything” – which they carried to the top of the pop charts late in 1991. They scored a follow-up hit early in 1992, and that was the end of their Top 40 success.

My middle 3 hits 30 years ago were also on my Top 5 a month earlier.

Extreme were a hard rock band out of Boston who enjoyed their greatest mainstream pop success when they slowed things down a bit. They scored a # 1 smash with “More Than Words”, and they quickly followed it up with “Hole Hearted” – a # 4 hit from coast-to-coast.

Here’s the official music video for “Hole Hearted” – filmed on downtown Boston’s Tremont Street in 1991:

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 35 years ago to October 1986.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

Here it is – for the week ending Sunday October 13TH 1996:

  1. “Let’s Make A Night To Remember” – Bryan Adams
  2. “Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First)” – John Mellencamp
  3. “If It Makes You Happy” – Sheryl Crow
  4. “Counting Blue Cars” – Dishwalla
  5. “C’Mon N’ Ride It (The Train) – Quad City DJs

I’m gonna do this “Mini-Thoughts” style. Longtime readers of my blog know what that means:

  • Bryan Adams will be 62 next month.
  • He released his first single – a disco song – at age 19.
  • His breakthrough hit here in the U.S. – “Straight From The Heart” – early in 1983.
  • He’s still touring and performing today. I’d like to see him LIVE.
  • “Let’s Make A Night To Remember” is one of my favorites from him.
  • I like John Mellencamp’s music more today than I did back in the day.
  • 25 years later I forgot how “Key West Intermezzo” sounded like.
  • So I went to YouTube of course to play the video.
  • Good song. Good beat too. I was actually singing along to it.
  • It was his 22ND and final Top 40 hit here in the U.S.
  • When Sheryl Crow debuted in Spring of 1994 I said she’ll be around for awhile.
  • “If It Makes You Happy” rocked my face off in 1996.
  • It won a Grammy in 1997.
  • I wrote about Dishwalla’s “Counting Blue Cars” last month.
  • Fun Fact:  Quad City DJs are not from the Quad Cities. They are from the #JAX.

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 30 years ago to October 1991. “There’s a hole in my heart that can only be filled by you – and this hole in my heart can’t be filled with the things I do.” That Top 5 hit will be featured next week.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

Here it is – for the week ending Sunday September 22ND 1991:

  1. “Shiny Happy People” – R.E.M.
  2. “I’ll Be There” – The Escape Club
  3. “Wind Of Change” – The Scorpions
  4. “It Hit Me Like A Hammer” – Huey Lewis And The News
  5. “Every Heartbeat” – Amy Grant

For this edition of RETRO I wanted to highlight the one song on my Top 5 exactly 30 years ago that I don’t remember. It’s because I haven’t heard it since 30 years ago when it spent 19 weeks on my chart. I’m talking about The Escape Club’s “I’ll Be There”. You probably remember their biggest hit – “Wild Wild West” – from 1988. You may even remember its immediate follow-up hit – “Shake For The Sheik”. I remember both. But I seriously didn’t remember “I’ll Be There”. That is – until I went on YouTube to watch the music video for it.

Now I remember it. Good song. Good video. It’s almost like a pop anthem for that time-period. It can easily bring tears to your eyes. That was their final song. It was their 3RD of 3 Top 40 hits here stateside. They were a British band out of London England, but they never charted in the U.K. with any single or album. They did achieve some success “down under” in Australia and New Zealand.

I just bought the single on iTunes. YES – I still buy music. Now THAT’S RETRO !

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 35 years ago to September 1986.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !
