My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1985

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so it’s a special. Back in 1985 I was an 18-year-old USAF Airman Basic living in a dorm at Chanute AFB near Rantoul Illinois. In September I was in my 2ND month of technical school – learning how to do my future job. We were approaching the halfway point of our 12-week class. For the first 6 weeks class started early in the morning, and it continued until the middle of the afternoon. For the remaining 6 weeks we went to a “swing shift” schedule – starting in the middle of the afternoon, and continuing until late at night. That got us accustomed to the various schedules that we could face while working our job at our first permanent duty station.

I’m still having fun over on Facebook at the Chanute AFB Veterans page – enjoying the classic photos and reminiscing about my short time there on that base surrounded by cornfields. I wish I had photos to share, but sadly I didn’t own a camera or take pictures back then. I had a lot of fun though with my classmates and dormmates !

These were the hottest hits in the land exactly 35 years ago this weekend – for the week ending Sunday September 08TH 1985:

“We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” – Tina Turner

Good solid pop / light-rock music set back then. That’s what played on my static-filled AM radio in my 1980 Chevy Citation (my first car). #MusicRadioWLSChicago

My Lunch At P.F. Chang’s

I planned it well in advance. It seemed to execute without a hitch, and then …

Our County Mayor reopened our restaurants for inside dining (at 50% capacity) this past Monday August 31ST for the first time since the 2ND week of July. (They were previously open during the 2ND-half of May, all of June, and into July.)

I decided to eat inside a restaurant for Lunch on that first day of business, and that restaurant was P.F. Chang’s – about 17 miles away from home. It’s been over 6 years since I ate a meal at P.F. Chang’s, and I had a unique craving – for their banana spring rolls with caramel-vanilla drizzle and coconut-pineapple ice cream.

Well I never got to that epic finale. As I’m about two-thirds done with my beef and broccoli with brown rice lunch bowl (delicious) – the restaurant is plunged into darkness. The music stops, the lights go out, the air conditioner shuts-down, and the staff start panicking and yelling at each other to “check the breakers ! – check all of them !”.

The manager then started making some frantic telephone calls, and he soon realized that the “biggest breaker” that serves the entire outdoor shopping mall (100+ stores and restaurants) blew, and it could be anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes before it could be seen and repaired.

I was their only dine-in customer at the time. My waiter came over to me and apologized for the situation, and we had a good laugh about it. I was able to finish my meal in the dark. (I was seated at a booth by a window, so there was plenty of light to see.) I also started sweating while finishing my meal since temperatures were rapidly climbing inside the restaurant.

I paid my bill – manually – the old-fashioned way – before modern credit card devices existed – and I departed the now closed shopping center for home.

Those banana spring rolls with caramel-vanilla drizzle and coconut-pineapple ice cream await me for another day.

Colton Dixon remains at # 1 for a 2ND week with my favorite song on the radio. In addition to the lyrics of “Miracles” I love its feel. I love its beat. It almost gets funky at one point during the song where I wish I had bongo drums to play along to the beat.

I AM THEY ease back up a notch to # 2 after slipping to # 3 last week with their former # 1 smash “No Impossible With You”. You know each summer there’s a sleeper smash that I never saw coming. It’s the song that will likely remind me (personally) of this summer season years from now. I think this is it. It’ll be interesting to see where this song lands on my special chart next Tuesday September 08TH when I #CountUp my Top 10 hits of the Summer of 2020 (from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend).

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again this upcoming weekend – with 5 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, and a special Tuesday edition. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Sunday Scripture

Greetings my friends ! It’s Sunday August 30TH 2020, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us continue to praise and worship Christ our Savior !

This past Friday evening I got the call to preach to my church body on this Sunday morning. I immediately went to work to finalize my sermon. I’ll be preaching out of the Book of Malachi with a sermon that I wrote in January and February (before COVID-19). It’s the first part of hopefully a multi-part message series on the prophet Malachi. I haven’t started writing the second part yet. I was waiting until I had the opportunity to preach the first part before I began work on the next part.

In this first part I’ll be covering Malachi’s message on God’s love for Israel – as well as his message on corrupt priests.

Scripture will be mostly from the Old Testament with 4 additional verses from Romans.

My “call-to-action” to close-out my sermon will be based on Romans 10:14-15:

How can they – call on Him to save them unless they believe in Him ?
How can they – believe in Him if they have never heard about Him ?
How can they – hear about Him unless someone tells them ?
How will anyone go and tell them without being sent ?
That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring Good News !”

You know I always get excited and look forward to “Sermon Sunday” – those Sundays when I get the opportunity to share my heart with my brothers and sisters of my church body. I am blessed for these opportunities to preach God’s Word from the pulpit.

Even if these opportunities to preach were to diminish or disappear – I’d still write sermons at home. I’d continue to share them with you – my brothers and sisters in Christ – my friends and neighbors worldwide who follow this blog. My sermons are open letters to God.

If you’re a believer and follower of God then I encourage you to talk to Him, sing for Him, dance for Him, and write to Him. Do it all for Him. Share with others what God places in your heart. Be a messenger of God’s Good News.

If you’re not yet a believer and follower of God then I encourage you to keep an open mind and an open heart. I’d like to share with you the God that I know. He’s the God that loves you immensely. He’s got a fantastic journey that awaits you. It’s created and customized just for you. He’ll wait for you until you’re ready to accept Him.
