My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1991

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday May 19TH 1991:

  1. “Joyride” – Roxette
  2. “Here We Go (Let’s Rock & Roll)” – C + C Music Factory Presents Freedom Williams & Zelma Davis
  3. “Disappear” – INXS
  4. “I Touch Myself” – The Divinyls
  5. “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” – C + C Music Factory Ft. Freedom Williams

30 years ago this weekend I compiled and published my 302ND hit music chart. That was during the original mainstream Top 40 era of my chart that ran from November 1985 to November 1992.

At # 11 on my chart that week was the debut smash from Michael W. Smith. His “Place In This World” was steadily climbing and getting ready to enter my Top 10. Amy Grant cowrote it with Michael W. Smith and Wayne Kirkpatrick. Michael W. Smith holds the distinction of having the longest span of any artist on my chart from first hit to last hit – 29 years. His “Waymaker” last year was a Top 3 hit.

Here’s the official music video of his first hit – “Place In This World”:

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 35 years ago to May 1986.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from the previous week. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here’s this week’s chart:

2018 – “The Way (New Horizon)” – Pat Barrett
2017 – “Oh My Soul” – Casting Crowns

Kevin Michael McKeehan AKA Toby McKeehan AKA TobyMac climbs to the top of my chart with “Help Is On The Way (Maybe Midnight)”. It’s his first # 1 smash on my chart since my very first chart during this current era that began 221 weeks ago. That was “Love Broke Thru” that topped the return of my chart after a 7-year hiatus in February 2017. Toby’s first # 1 smash was exactly a decade before that in February 2007 – “Made To Love”.

Moving up 2 notches to # 3 this week is the latest from Chris Tomlin from his album of inspirational songs with some of his friends. “God Who Listens” is his collaboration with country music star Thomas Rhett. It returns Chris back into the Top 3 for the first time in nearly 2 years. His first 4 hits on my chart peaked at either # 1 or # 2 or # 3, but his last hit – “Who You Are To Me” (with Lady A) – stalled-out after 3 weeks at # 10.

Here’s the official lyric video for “God Who Listens”:

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1996

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 25 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday May 12TH 1996:

  1. “The World I Know” – Collective Soul
  2. “Name” – Goo Goo Dolls
  3. “Follow You Down” – Gin Blossoms
  4. “Ooh Boy” – Real McCoy
  5. “Take Your Chance” – Fun Factory

Collective Soul, Goo Goo Dolls, and Gin Blossoms:  Who are 3 cool light-rock bands who enjoyed their greatest mainstream Top 40 success during the mid-1990s ?

Collective Soul formed during the early-1990s, and Goo Goo Dolls and Gin Blossoms formed during the mid-1980s. All 3 bands are still together today – performing and touring. Aside from a brief hiatus during the late-1990s for Gin Blossoms all 3 bands have been continuously active since the beginning. Goo Goo Dolls celebrate their 35TH anniversary this year !

All 3 bands had a lot of great songs during their heyday, but if I had to pick a fave from each of them then it would have to be Collective Soul’s “The World I Know”,  Goo Goo Dolls’ “Name”, and Gin Blossoms’ “Hey Jealousy” (from my wild and crazy Summer of 1993).

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 30 years ago to May 1991.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 221

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from the previous week. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here’s this week’s chart:

COUNTUP MINISTRIES FOR THE WEEK ENDING SUNDAY MAY 09TH 2021 WEEK 221
TW LW WKS SONG TITLE ARTIST / SITE
1 1 16 Fires
[3RD week @ # 1]
Jordan St. Cyr
2 3 7 Child Of Love We The Kingdom Ft. Bear Rinehart
3 6 9 Help Is On The Way (Maybe Midnight) TobyMac
4 2 5 God Of Revival Brian & Jenn Johnson
5 5 8 God Who Listens Chris Tomlin Ft. Thomas Rhett
6 4 12 Good God Almighty Crowder
7 7 24 Every Step Of The Way Cade Thompson
8 1 Yes He Can Cain
9 8 5 Gospel Song Rhett Walker
10 10 3 Mean Girls Leanna Crawford

# 1 This Week In:
2020 – “Almost Home” – MercyMe
2019 – “Alive” – Big Daddy Weave
2018 – “The Way (New Horizon)” – Pat Barrett
2017 – “Forgiven” – Crowder

#Surprise. Jordan St. Cyr is still at # 1 with “Fires”. We The Kingdom are back up a notch to # 2 with perhaps my next # 1 smash. Or could it be the latest from TobyMac – whose “Help Is On The Way” is now his highest-charting hit in over 3 years (since “I Just Need U.”). It’s his 8TH hit since this chart was resurrected in 2017, and it’s his 11TH hit overall since 2007. If we go back even further to 1996 we can include dc Talk’s hit – “Between You And Me” – since Toby was one-third of the band.

My Pastor’s sermon yesterday morning was titled “Help Is On The Way”, and it continued his message series on how great and glorious our God is. All throughout his sermon our Pastor would return to the title of his sermon, and I couldn’t help but hum the TobyMac song “Help Is On The Way”. I actually made note of it after his sermon when I took over to close the service, but I don’t think a single one of my brothers and sisters was familiar with the current hit on the radio.

Here’s the official music video for that current TobyMac hit on the radio – now with nearly 3.8 million views on YouTube:
