My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1980

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 5TH Friday of the month, so it’s a SPECIAL !  Let’s go back 40 years ago. Now I didn’t write down my own chart back then, but I did follow Billboard Magazine’s Hot 100, and I did listen to Casey Kasem present “American Top 40” from coast to coast. Here it is – the Billboard Top 5 for the week ending Sunday February 03RD 1980:

  1. “Rock With You” – Michael Jackson
  2. “Do That To Me One More Time” – The Captain And Tennille
  3. “Coward Of The County” – Kenny Rogers
  4. “Cruisin'” – Smokey Robinson
  5. “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” – Queen

I wasn’t a big fan of 1980 pop music. It hasn’t aged well either over the decades. I was 12 going on 13 in 1980. I was in Junior High School in Lanham Maryland. I listened to Q-107 out of Washington D.C. They were famous for their “commercial-free music sweeps”.

Q107

One song in particular was huge in 1980, and it’s still huge (for me) in 2020. It’s Gary Numan’s “Cars”. It was a Top 40 hit here in the U.S. for about 4 months, and it reached the Top 10. Q-107 played it around the clock, and it’s played 1,119 times on my iPod Shuffles over the past 10 years. I saw Gary LIVE in concert in Oxford England in September 1987, and at the time of that concert “Cars” had been reissued as a single, and it was on the U.K. Top 20 !

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll start over and check out the music of my life from February 2010. It actually ended a chapter of my Christian life that was quite bittersweet. I’ll share it with you in 7 days. But until then keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for God !

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 154

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 26TH 2020:

  1. “Rescue Story” – Zach Williams [# 2 last week / 16TH week on chart]
  2. “The God Who Stays” – Matthew West [3 / 10TH]
  3. “Almost Home” – MercyMe [4 / 6TH]
  4. “Holy Water” – We The Kingdom [1 / 9TH]
  5. “Waymaker” – Michael W. Smith Ft. Vanessa Campagna [- / 1ST]
  6. “Your Name Is Power” – Rend Collective [6 / 3RD]
  7. “Smile” – Sidewalk Prophets [5 / 8TH]
  8. “Like You Love Me” – Tauren Wells [9 / 2ND]
  9. “I Will Fear No More” – The Afters [- / 1ST]
  10. “One Day” – Cochren & Co. [- / 1ST]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week:
“Nobody Loves Me Like You” – Chris Tomlin

# 1 Two Years Ago This Week:
“Gracefully Broken” – Matt Redman Ft. Tasha Cobbs Leonard

Zach Williams sings my new favorite song on the radio this week, as his “Rescue Story” becomes my 44TH # 1 smash in the nearly 3 years of this current era of my chart. It’s Zach’s 4TH Top 5 hit in a row (since “Old Church Choir”), and this is his 46TH week on my chart (combined). I love Zach’s personal “Rescue Story”. I’ve seen him in concert a couple of times, and he shares his testimony with the audience in-between his songs about his Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

Michael W. Smith is back with his 5TH hit on my chart over the past 29 years. He hit with a trio of songs that crossed-over onto many secular Top 40 radio stations back in 1991 and 1992 with “Place In This World”, “For You”, and “I Will Be Here For You”. He also hit with “Surrounded” in September 2018. I really like this song a lot !  K-LOVE added it to their active playlist a couple of weeks ago, and I think that it’s caught-on quickly with us – their listeners – because they are playing it often throughout the day and night.

With 3 new entries this week we lost 3 songs including a pair of # 1s – “Unstoppable God” (Sanctus Real) and “Nobody (But Jesus)” (Casting Crowns Ft. Matthew West). The latter returns in 3 weeks and a day when I present my Top 20 hits of the past 3 years on a special Tuesday blog post on the day after Presidents’ Day here in the U.S. (That marks the 3RD anniversary of the resurrection of my weekly hit music chart.)

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. I’m also on Twitter @ChrisMDay, and I’m the man behind the tweets for my church @LivingWatersHFL.

Enjoy this new week my friends !  May the God of hope fill you completely with joy and peace as you trust in Him.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 28TH 1990:

  1. “Dangerous” – Roxette
  2. “Leave A Light On” – Belinda Carlisle
  3. “It’s Not Enough” – Starship
  4. “Janie’s Got A Gun” – Aerosmith
  5. “Roam” – The B-52s

1990 was a great year for Top 40 music on the radio. It was the start of the greatest decade of pop music of my lifetime; although, I’ve always considered 1989 to be the theoretical start of 1990s music.

My iTunes library contains almost 300 hits from the 1990s (and another 30+ from 1989) – more than any other decade by far. I listen to ’90s music at my desk at work all day every day (amongst hits from other decades).

I can’t believe that 1990 was 30 years ago !  It was quite the momentous year for me. The Summer Of 1990 will be remembered as the Summer Of Rock & Roll on Panama City Beach Florida. It was a wonderful summer (at the time) – that will never happen again. It was fun for a season. 20½ years later – a few days before Christmas of 2010 – I went back to the scene of the crime – more mature, more educated, and saved by the Grace of God – to literally repent for what happened back then in 1990.

So every 4TH Friday of the month this year I’ll take you back to my 1990 – and the soundtrack of my life back then as a 22 and 23-year-old active duty military guy.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 153

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. This week I’m doing it on Tuesday due to the U.S. holiday yesterday. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 19TH 2020:

  1. “Holy Water” – We The Kingdom [# 1 last week / 8TH week on chart]
  2. “Rescue Story” – Zach Williams [2 / 15TH]
  3. “The God Who Stays” – Matthew West [3 / 9TH]
  4. “Almost Home” – MercyMe [4 / 5TH]
  5. “Smile” – Sidewalk Prophets [5 / 7TH]
  6. “Your Name Is Power” – Rend Collective [8 / 2ND]
  7. “Unstoppable God” – Sanctus Real [6 / 11TH]
  8. “Nobody (But Jesus)” – Casting Crowns Ft. Matthew West [7 / 25TH]
  9. “Like You Love Me” – Tauren Wells [- / 1ST]
  10. “In The Arms” – Terrian [10 / 3RD]

# 1 One Year Ago This Week:
“Nobody Loves Me Like You” – Chris Tomlin

# 1 Two Years Ago This Week:
“Lions” – Skillet

“Holy Water” holds at # 1 for a 3RD week in a row, but this could be its final week at the top of my chart. Zach, Matthew, and the MercyMe crew are heating-up in the next 3 chart positions, and any 1 of them could take over the top spot next week.

Yesterday afternoon I returned home from a 3-day / 3-county / 360-mile Florida road-trip to and from Fort Myers. I listened to a lot of K-LOVE on the radio in my car and even some WAY-FM. Next week’s chart should be very active. I’ll write all about my road-trip in just 48 hours as I begin a new weekend of blogging this upcoming Thursday morning.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.
