The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1988

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 24TH 1988:

  1. “I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That” – Elton John
  2. “Lost In You” – Rod Stewart
  3. “Simply Irresistible” – Robert Palmer
  4. “Hole In My Heart” – Cyndi Lauper
  5. “Do You Love Me ?” – The Contours

I’ve got an old-school early-2010s-era iPod Shuffle (4TH Generation – orange in color) that I listen to at work, and it’s essentially got 305 of the greatest hits of my lifetime – from the mid-1960s clear through to present-day time. 120 of the 305 are hits before 1980, and another 45 hits are from the 1980s.

Looking back at my entire Top 40 chart for this weekend exactly 30 years ago there are a few songs that are on my iPod Shuffle, so I hear them almost every day at work:  Guns ‘N Roses debuted with their massive smash – “Sweet Child O’ Mine” – at # 37. I consider it to be one of the greatest hard rock songs of its time. Cheap Trick’s “The Flame” rose to # 28. It still sounds fresh today – just like it did in 1988. Additionally Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” (# 3) is a long-running hit on my iPod Shuffle – garnering 864 plays over the past 6½ years.

# 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for this weekend exactly 30 years ago – Richard Marx with “Hold On To The Nights”.

It’s halftime. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with my remaining two blogs for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Make memories of a lifetime !

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 74

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 15TH 2018:

  1. “Grace Got You” – MercyMe [# 2 last week / 15TH week on chart]
  2. “Dream Small” – Josh Wilson [3 / 7TH]
  3. “Do It Again” – Elevation Worship [1 / 11TH]
  4. “All In” – Matthew West [4 / 11TH]
  5. “The Way (New Horizon)” – Pat Barrett [5 / 11TH]
  6. “Resurrection Power” – Chris Tomlin [6 / 23RD]
  7. “Good News” – Mandisa [7 / 4TH]
  8. “Living Hope” – Phil Wickham [9 / 2ND]
  9. “Wherever I Go” – Dan Bremnes [10 / 2ND]
  10. “The Breakup Song” – Francesca Battistelli [- / 1ST]

MercyMe scores their 2ND consecutive # 1 smash here on my chart with “Grace Got You”. It’s their follow-up to last year’s “Even If” which spent 2 weeks at # 1 at the end of April of 2017. At 15 weeks it’s also the slowest song to reach # 1 during this current era of this chart – beating out Chris Tomlin’s “Home” which reached # 1 in its 14TH week on this chart a little over a year ago.

“Grace Got You” is quite the catchy up-tempo tune that will encourage you to hum, hope, sing, glide, dance, laugh, and smile.

This concludes my 4 blogs this weekend. The “Good News” is that I’m “All In”, so I’ll be back to “Do It Again” next weekend with all-new blogs on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest. Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to win souls for Christ. Enjoy this week.

The Major’s Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1998

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 12TH 1998:

  1. Ray Of Light – Madonna
  2. Hey Now Now – Swirl 360
  3. The Way – Fastball
  4. I Want You Back – ‘N Sync
  5. Real World – Matchbox 20

Good music from this week exactly 20 years ago – back when I was young 31.

“Hey Now Now” was a huge summer smash – particularly here in Florida on Top 40 radio. It spent 9 weeks in a row on my Top 5 at the time. Swirl 360 were 28-year-old twins Denny and Kenny Scott, and they recorded this poppy gem on Jacksonville Beach – just a few miles away from where my parents and little brother lived at the time. They were on the same record label (Mercury Records) as Hanson (also brothers), and they had the same manager as well. “Hey Now Now” was 1998’s answer to 1997’s “MMMBop”.

Here’s the official music video for “Hey Now Now”. Surf’s Up Dudes !

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 73

Every Monday night I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 08TH 2018:

  1. “Do It Again” – Elevation Worship [# 1 last week / 10TH week on chart]
  2. “Grace Got You” – MercyMe [2 / 14TH]
  3. “Dream Small” – Josh Wilson [3 / 6TH]
  4. “All In” – Matthew West [4 / 10TH]
  5. “The Way (New Horizon)” – Pat Barrett [5 / 10TH]
  6. “Resurrection Power” – Chris Tomlin [6 / 22ND]
  7. “Good News” – Mandisa [9 / 3RD]
  8. “Counting Every Blessing” – Rend Collective [10 / 4TH]
  9. “Living Hope” – Phil Wickham [- / 1ST]
  10. “Wherever I Go” – Dan Bremnes [- / 1ST]

It’s the 73RD week of the 3RD-life of this personal weekly hit music chart, and we have two debut artists entering as the 75TH and 76TH hits since the 1ST week.

Phil Wickham’s “Living Hope” enters at # 9. It’s been growing on me for a few weeks now. With sufficient radio airplay on K-LOVE it has the potential of being a long-running smash.

Phil’s biggest hit was the # 1 smash “This Is Amazing Grace” which graced the radio airwaves from the Summer of 2013 straight-through much of 2014. It’s a song that my church family sings out loud and proud on many Sunday mornings during Praise & Worship. Here’s the official music video for that classic:
