Another Cold Morning !

It’s another cold morning here in America’s Riviera – mid-50s with wind chills in the low-50s. We dropped down to 51°F on Wednesday morning, and 56°F on Tuesday morning. Now you may think that temperatures at dawn in the 50s is a heatwave for you, but here at sea level at 25.5° north latitude (near the Tropic Of Cancer) that makes for a cold morning. Our average minimum temperature for the entire year (right now – mid-January) is right at 60°F, so once we drop below normal – it’s cold outside !

When we drop into the 40s – now that’s downright frigid. That’s “severe weather” for us. We’ve had two such mornings so far – one in late-November and one in mid-December. Last winter we had 12 such mornings in the 40s. The last time we hit the 30s ?  February 20TH 2015. Most of us hibernated that day.

South Floridians don’t dress like everyone else in North America. When we hit the 50s in the morning we’re all bundled up as if there’s a raging blizzard out there. When we reach the 40s we start calling in sick (cold) from work.

YES – This is the exciting time of the year where our weather changes rapidly based on approaching and passing cold fronts from the northwest. Once our rainy season gets started in mid-May – well then we pretty much know what to expect for the next 5 months after that. We can expect everything – except for cold temperatures. During the rainy season we’ll be stuck in a narrow 20°F range from 73°F to 93°F day and night.

Uh-oh. We just dropped another degree as I wrote this blog post. It’s 54°F at 6 AM.

The Major’s Walk-A-Thon

Date: Wednesday December 05TH 2018
Time (EST): 8:15 AM – 9:06 AM
Sky: Mostly Cloudy
Temperature: 67°F
Dewpoint: 58°F
Relative Humidity: 71%
Winds: NW 15 MPH
Barometric Pressure: 30.08″ Rising

On a cool and crisp morning of a federal holiday (“National Day Of Mourning” for President George H. W. Bush) I decided that it was the perfect time to kickoff the 12TH season of “The Major’s Walk-A-Thon” yesterday morning. I did so with a 2.88-mile power-walk in 51 minutes and 13 seconds.

I’ve been blogging about my personal fitness program since I started it 11 years ago this Christmas. It was inspired by a guy I never met – the younger brother of my Executive Pastor at the time. He walked around his neighborhood some 1,000 miles away, and he prayed for everyone. When he returned home he blogged about it. That inspired me to do the same. I intentionally walked my neighborhood for the first time in my life at high noon on Christmas Eve of 2007 to spend time with God, to pray for my neighbors, and to get fit. I had quit drinking alcohol nearly two months prior to that, and I would soon quit smoking cigarettes forever (after 30 years) about 4 months later.

So here it is – Season 12. This walk is seasonal. It generally starts in October or November and ends in April or May. I only walk in the Fall, Winter, and Spring – because I live in South Florida – where it’s unbearably hot, humid, wet, and buggy for about 6 months out of the year. Last season (11) was a bust. I only walked 6 times for a total of 15.12 miles. That was way down from the previous two seasons when I walked between 45 and 50 miles per year. Season 8 was the best. I walked over 73 miles !

Peppered all throughout the 11-year history of this blog you’ll see historical accounts of “The Major’s Walk-A-Thon”. When this blog was dark for more than half of this current decade I blogged about my walks over on Facebook. Sometimes I tweet about them. I won’t blog about my walks on every occasion, but I’ll keep you updated throughout the season as to my progress.

Finally I dedicate “The Major’s Walk-A-Thon” to my dad – William Lesley Day (1941-2010). He developed ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) – “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” – in 2006. He lost the ability to walk on his own shortly after that. God encouraged me to walk for my dad, and follow Him. I believe that my dad is cheering me on now from Heaven.

Sunday Scripture

I have returned home from vacation up north. In one of my longest vacations ever (14 days) I visited my mom, brother, sister-in-law, two nieces, and dog up north of Cincinnati Ohio. I flew up there on Saturday November 10TH (Veterans Day holiday weekend), and I flew back home to South Florida on (Black) Friday November 23RD. It was probably my final trip to Ohio for awhile, as in about 5 months my family will very likely move SW back to north of Dallas Texas – where they lived previously from 2006 to 2013.

The weather up in Ohio was mostly cloudy, wet, and miserable with 20s, 30s, and some 40s. On my 9TH day there we actually crawled up above 50°F for the only time. I returned home with dry, flaky, cracked, white skin with isolated spots of blood. The healing process began immediately as I stepped foot in our moist tropical air. It was almost 80°F with relative humidity near 70%. No more cold weather for me aside from perhaps a dozen mornings between now and the end of March. We’ve actually got a powerful cold front in the forecast for this Tuesday. We’ll have a rather chilly 48 hours from Wednesday morning to Friday morning with afternoon highs in the low-70s and morning lows in the mid-50s. No complaints here. I survived 14 days of winter up north !

My last two Sundays felt a bit empty, as I was without my church family. I was definitely looking forward to this day – the day the LORD has made. We rejoiced, and we were glad in it. It was great to be back home with my church family celebrating our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. Our Lead Pastor Bob spoke on “Knowing God ” – our Creator. He began with this Scripture:

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak. Night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or word. Their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun. It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. The sun rises at one end of the heavens, and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat. (Psalm 19:1-6 NLT)

Casting Crowns remain at # 1 for the 10TH week in a row in a rather quiet week on my chart. Nationally on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart Lauren Daigle remains at # 1 for the 10TH week in a row.

I’m currently on vacation in cold and cloudy and dark and gloomy Ohio. It’s one of the coldest Novembers of the past 100 years, and I just happen to be here for half of it. This is my 10TH day here, and I think I’ve seen the sun for a small portion on about 3 days. A few days ago we had fog, rain, freezing rain, ice, and snow – all in a matter of hours. We hit 52°F / 11°C yesterday. It was and will be the only day in the 50s while I’m here. I’m ready for the return of the 70s and 80s back home in South Florida this weekend !

Thanksgiving Day is just 3 days away. May you enjoy the day with family, friends, fellowship, food, and football.

I give thanks to you – O Lord my God – with my whole heart, and I will glorify Your name forever. (Psalm 86:12, ESV)

Aside from this flagship Monday night post my blog remains on hiatus until Sunday November 25TH 2018. I’ll return with “Sunday Scripture” and my new chart next Monday. I’ll return to 4 blogs per weekend starting on Thursday November 29TH 2018.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. Enjoy this week my friends. I’m on Twitter @ChrisMDay, and I’m also the man behind the tweets for my church @LivingWatersHFL. May God bless you – always and forever.
