Monday Night Countdown

I thought about doing a Washington Redskins / Super Bowl TOP 5 for this week’s edition of the ‘Monday Night Countdown’, but that would just be so predictable. I’d pick all 5 Super Bowls that the Redskins played in (1972, 1982, 1983, 1987, and 1991), and their 3 wins would be # 1, # 2, and # 3 with their two losses as # 4 and # 5. Wow – How anticlimactic.

How about if I simply present the TOP 5 NFL teams with current winning records that I don’t think will make the playoffs in January:

5.  San Francisco 49ers (2-1) – Only one team will make the playoffs from the NFC West. It’s who wins the division, and that will be the Arizona Cardinals.

4.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) – Only one team will make the playoffs from the NFC South, and I really think that this is the Atlanta Falcons’ year.

3.  Carolina Panthers (2-1) – See above.

2.  Washington Redskins (2-1) – It’s the NFL’s toughest division in the NFL’s toughest conference. They are no longer known as the ‘NFC Least’, but rather the ‘NFC Beast’. (Thanks for that one Danny.) Unfortunately only 3 out of 4 teams from a single division can advance into the playoffs in January. At this point the Cowboys, the Giants, and the Eagles all look a little tougher than my beloved Redskins. They can very easily finish with a winning record of 9-7 or 10-6 or even better and still finish in last place in the division. I want the Redskins to make the playoffs, but they may need another year of rebuilding before that happens. I hope that I’m wrong.

1.  New England Patriots (2-1) – Yeah I went there. After a decade of dominance the AFC is in a decline, and its decline is being led by the spiraling Patriots as well as the Jaguars, the Colts, and the Chargers – all with losing records. The decline began when the New York Football Giants shocked the world and beat the Pats in the Super Bowl.

Life Pointe Church Sunday Morning Tossed Salad

1.  I arrived at the movie theatre just a few minutes after 7 AM on this glorious Sunday morning here in Homestead Florida, but that wasn’t early enough for my good friend from The Keys – Tom. He was already hard at work and planning a major upgrade of ‘Noah’s Ark’ (where we store a majority of our setup material for the main lobby). The Ark got a fresh new set of wheels this morning and an alignment to boot !  It’s good to go for another 3 miles.

2.  Pastor Travis led us on a journey through Chapter 2 of Habakkuk within the Old Testament. When we’re in ‘the dip’ we need to listen, write, and wait. We must always realize that God’s delays are not his denials. His goodness comes in His time. We must remain patient for it.

Habakkuk (2:1-4)
1  I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the LORD says and how he will answer my complaint.

The LORD’s Second Reply
2  Then the LORD said to me, “Write my answer plainly on tablets, so that a runner can carry the correct message to others.
3  This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.
4  “Look at the proud !  They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked. But the righteous will live by their faithfulness to God.

3.  Exactly 20 months ago today on the 21ST of January in 2007 I walked through the front doors of Life Pointe Church for the very first time. That was about 5 months into God’s amazing journey for me which started in August of 2006. This journey of 25 months has been mostly up, up, and away beyond my wildest expectations, but there have been a few slight dips along the way. The wonderful feeling that I get when I successfully pull out one of those dips can’t be explained in mere words. Experiencing a dip is normal. Dealing with it requires patience. Coming out of it is the greatest feeling in the world. It is all because of Him. It is all so if you just let Him.

Saturday Night Retro

LAST WEEK on the ‘Retro’ I got my Disco groove on with Patrick Hernandez and “Born To Be Alive”. It’s one of my all-time favourite hits from the “Studio 54” era.

THIS WEEK we keep it ‘Retro’, but we fast-forward in time by exactly a decade. It’s 1989, and America is prosperous, peaceful, and happy. President George H.W. Bush is following the legacy of President Ronald W. Reagan and staying the course. The Cold War is done and over with. The Berlin Wall is crumbling to pieces. We’re watching “The Cosby Show” and “Cheers” on TV on Thursday nights. We’re listening to Fine Young Cannibals, Milli Vanilli, New Kids On The Block, Paula Abdul, and Roxette on the radio. Me – I’m dancing like a total maniac to this # 1 club smash at Cafe Iguana in Kendall and Confetti’s in North Miami Beach:
