My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2007

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so I go back 15 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday April 01ST 2007:

  1. “Procrastinating” – Stellar Kart
  2. “Wake Up ! Wake Up !” – Everyday Sunday
  3. “Live Like We’re Alive” – Nevertheless
  4. “Forgiven” – Relient K
  5. “After The World” – Disciple

Those are all classics of the era right there. In my 8TH month of salvation I was completely immersed in the Christian pop and rock scene via my church, local radio, and online. Every single one of those songs (and many more of the time) bring me back to a part of my life that was unlike any before it. I was a baby Christian – on fire for Christ – a few months before my 40TH birthday.

Here’s the official music video for my # 2 hit that week 15 years ago:

Sometimes I wish I could recapture a sliver of that euphoria that I experienced during those early months as a baby Christian, but God does not intend to stay in place. He wants us to keep moving forward, and keep maturing with a soul on fire for Him. Don’t be sleepwalking through endless days. Don’t be procrastinating. Live like we’re alive !

Next #RetroFriday I’ll go back 25 years ago to April 1997. It’s when German Eurodance was dominant on the pop charts.

This is the end of an abbreviated blog weekend, as #SundayScripture and #Top10Monday are on hiatus this weekend. They will both return next weekend. In fact a full weekend of blogging returns next weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Here it is – for the week ending Sunday March 04TH 2007:

  1. “Made To Love” – TobyMac
  2. “Word Of Mouth” – John Reuben
  3. “Nostalgiatopia” – Eleventyseven
  4. “Morning Air” – The Wedding
  5. “Live Like We’re Alive” – Nevertheless

In February 2007 I discovered TobyMac. His debut smash – “Made To Love” – was playing on the radio around the clock, and I was loving its sound and meaning. It spent 5 weeks at # 1 on my chart at the time, and it finished 2007 as my # 2 hit of the entire year. (John Reuben’s “Word Of Mouth” was # 1 for the year.)

Toby charted 3 times during the “Salvation Era” of my chart – with “Made To Love”, “Boomin'”, and “City On Our Knees”.

And then I walked away from Christian music on the radio and ended my weekly hit music chart after 14+ consecutive years (1995-2010).

7 years later in February 2017 a TobyMac concert in Tallahassee and the discovery of K-LOVE on the airwaves in South Florida resurrected my chart, and Toby scored my first # 1 smash of the new era with “Love Broke Through”.

I’ve been to 4 TobyMac concerts over the past 12 years, and each one of them was an extra special event on my fantastic journey. Toby needs to get back down here to South Florida so that I can sing and dance to our God again with Toby’s inspiring music, lyrics, and energy.

Next #RetroFriday I’ll go back 25 years ago to March 1997. It’s when two guys from Australia scored a # 1 smash with their very first single.

  4. “Forgiven” – Relient K
  5. “Jesus Freak” – Chasing Victory

15 years ago I maintained and published online a Top 25 chart each week, and there’s my Top 5. That’s a good sampling right there of Christian pop, punk, and hard rock.

You know I never knew the original “Jesus Freak” song from DC Talk. That version was released back during the Summer of 1995 when I didn’t know God. Although it kinda sorta crossed over to Mainstream Top 40 radio it was just a very minor hit – peaking just below the Billboard Hot 100 nationwide. TobyMac (as a solo artist) released his own version of “Jesus Freak” on a LIVE album in 2008. Newsboys (Michael Tait era) have performed “Jesus Freak” LIVE in concert over the past dozen years. (TobyMac and Michael Tait were 2 out of 3 of DC Talk. The other – Kevin Max.)

I love the Chasing Victory version that hit my chart in 2007. It sounded great on the radio, and I always cranked it up loud and proud. You know – I didn’t really care if they labeled me a “Jesus Freak”. And I still don’t. I cherish that label today.

If you click on the Chasing Victory link up at # 5 above it takes you to their very active Myspace site. That’s right – Myspace. Now that’s retro !

Next #RetroFriday I’ll go back 25 years ago to February 1997.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going retro with me !

Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 07TH 2007:

  1. “Nostalgiatopia” – Eleventyseven
  2. “Forgiven” – Relient K
  3. “The Show” – Hawk Nelson
  4. “Waiting” – Fireflight
  5. “Regime Change” – Disciple

15 years ago is now 2007, and in January of 2007 I was looking forward to attending a rock concert inside a church building for the first time in my entire life – 5 months after the start of my salvation. That rock concert – sponsored by the local (Miami Florida) Christian rock / pop radio station – occurred on the night of Saturday January 20TH 2007, and it changed my life forever. The next morning – I attended the Sunday service of that church – but not at their church building. They used it during the week, but not on Sunday mornings. Their services were on the other side of town at the local movie theatre. #GodAtTheBoxOffice

Meanwhile the young pop-punk band known as Eleventyseven was a favorite of mine during those early Christian years. They had 5 huge hits on my chart – “Myspace” (# 2 in 2006), “Nostalgiatopia” (# 1 for 7 weeks in 2007), “Love In Your Arms” (# 1 for 6 weeks in 2007), “How It Feels (To Be With You)” (# 1 for 4 weeks in 2007), and “Trying” (# 1 for 10 weeks in 2009 into 2010). When I hear those songs today on my iPod Shuffles – particularly the 4 from 2006 & 2007 – I get goosebumps as they bring back great memories of those early days, weeks, and months as a baby Christian running on pure euphoria towards my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

O LORD of Heaven’s Armies – what euphoria fills those who forever trust in You !
(Psalm 84:12, TPT)
