The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

The 1970s just got another decade further away. Now that the first decade of the 21ST Century is complete we can theoretically state that the 1970s was four decades ago. It’s the decade that I entered as a 2½-year-old toddler, and exited as a 12½-year-old 7TH grader in Junior High School. For me it was the ‘TOP 40 Music’ decade, as it was the running soundtrack of my active childhood years. Whatever was hot on AM and FM pop radio was playing everywhere I went. Whenever I hear the music again from those times I frequently remember what I was doing at the time – good or bad – all of these years and decades later. It’s the music of my life.

This weekend on my ‘Disco Party’ I present to you a local homegrown Cuban / Miami disco act known as Foxy. Their single “Get Off” was their biggest hit – and a 1978 Disco Smash !

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

It’s well past 11 PM EST on this Friday night, and that’s not too late for some good old-fashioned Disco music. I heard the Disco beat high atop our Dinner table at P.F. Chang’s at The Falls. (That’s right – for the second Friday night in a row Dinner was served at the popular China Bistro.) Disco was also in full-swing just outside Johnny Rockets as the ‘Johnny Rockets Dancers’ were kickin’ it to K.C. & The Sunshine Band‘s “Get Down Tonight”. So Friday night is clearly Disco night in Miami – even in 2009 !

Tonight on my own personal ‘Disco Party’ it’s all about Christmas:

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

Disco Ball

Last week at the ‘Disco Party’ I featured Tavares with their Bicentennial (Summer Of 1976) hit from up above – “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel”. It’s 1 of about 20 TOP 40 hits since the rock era began (in the 1950s) that start with that very special word “Heaven”. You may also remember “Heaven” from Bryan Adams (and also DJ Sammy, Los Lonely Boys, and Warrant) – or how about Belinda Carlisle‘s # 1 smash from 1987 – “Heaven Is A Place On Earth”. There’s also Donna Summer‘s TOP 5 Disco smash “Heaven Knows”.

But this week I’ve got a Pointer Sister who branched out on her own during the late-1970s. She’s Bonnie Pointer, and she scored an incredible feat late in 1979. You see Disco allegedly died on a hot July night in 1979 at a Chicago White Sox baseball game. But a few leftover Disco songs on the charts never got the memo – including this one. Here’s Bonnie Pointer with “Heaven Must Have Sent You” – a TOP 15 Disco smash from the Autumn Of 1979 – several months after Disco allegedly died at Comiskey Park.

The Major’s Friday Night Disco Party

Brothers Ralph, ‘Pooch’, ‘Chubby’, ‘Butch’, and ‘Tiny’ are Tavares, and the’re a long-running R & B and Disco act from New Bedford Mass. They achieved their greatest mainstream chart success during the mid-1970s at the peak of the Disco era, but they’ve been performing together as a group for 50 years !

This was their biggest selling hit to date – and their only gold-certified single. It’s their # 1 Disco smash “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel”:
