My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 22ND 1990:

30 years ago this past week I completed a 2-week TDY. In military lingo a TDY is a temporary duty assignment that’s physically located somewhere away from your home station – usually for the purpose of training or deployment. I spent 2 weeks at Tyndall AFB near Panama City Florida. It was the wildest and craziest 2 weeks of the active duty portion of my military career.

I arrived on Saturday July 07TH 1990. 2 weeks / 10 days of training (related to my job) began on Monday July 09TH 1990 and ended on Friday July 20TH 1990. I returned home on Saturday July 21ST 1990. I drove a total of 1,687 miles from start to finish in my red 1989 Geo Spectrum. (Even back then I kept track of road-trip mileage.)

Me and one of my classmates (same age) discovered and explored (for the first time) Panama City Beach during the weekend break. We partied hard like it was 1990 and we were 23 years young. We hit up Spinnaker and Club La Vela. They were the hottest nightclubs on the beach for many years – located right next to each other. We went there both days / nights that weekend.

It was a rockin’ and rowdy weekend that I looked back at fondly for many years – until salvation began 16 summers later in 2006. That’s when I stopped celebrating it. That’s when I started repenting it.

But that wasn’t enough. I returned to Panama City Beach for 2 days and 2 nights leading up to Christmas Eve in 2010. The beach was cold and deserted. I was bundled up. I was back at the scene of the crimes. I walked the beach alone. I admired God’s beauty. I repented of my sins and I asked for forgiveness as I paced back-and-forth. I listened for God’s voice. Once I departed the beach on the morning of Christmas Eve I felt that I had finally closed that chapter of my life.

Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and He will again send you Jesus – your appointed Messiah. For He must remain in Heaven until the time for the final restoration of all things, as God promised long ago through His holy prophets. (Acts 3:19-21 NLT)

I observe that weekend in July of 1990, but I don’t celebrate it anymore. I thank God for rescuing and saving me from destruction some 16 years later. That’s what I celebrate nowadays – especially each summertime. Next month I’ll celebrate 14 years of salvation.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2000

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 16TH 2000:

“Higher” – Creed
“It’s Gonna Be Me” – ‘N Sync
“My Own Worst Enemy” – Lit
“Try Again” – Aaliyah
“Jumpin’, Jumpin'” – Destiny’s Child

Creed was at # 1 for the 9TH week in a row on this week exactly 20 years ago, and they would continue on for another 2 weeks before surrendering the top spot for the next 6 weeks after that. And then they would return to # 1 in September of 2000. “Higher” spent a total of 13 weeks at # 1 on my chart in 2000. To this date it remains the 2ND longest-running # 1 smash in the history of my chart.

One of my favorite pop / punk songs of all-time was Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy”. It was a late-bloomer here on my chart. Over a year after it peaked at Mainstream Top 40 radio it was one of my biggest hits in July of 2000 – eventually reaching # 2. I still love the song today.

Over at the multiplex I saw 4 movies in July of 2000 – “Me, Myself, & Irene”, “Scary Movie”, “Disney’s The Kid”, and “Loser”. 2000 was a year in which I saw 27 movies – the most of my adult life up to that point. (So far in 2020 I’ve seen 1 movie. #COVID19)

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2005

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 15 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 10TH 2005:

“Don’t Mess With My Heart” – Black Eyed Peas
“Incomplete” – Backstreet Boys
“Behind These Hazel Eyes” – Kelly Clarkson
“Hollaback Girl” – Gwen Stefani
“Switch” – Will Smith

This was another forgettable week of pop music during a mostly forgettable summer of a mostly forgettable year. A few good songs came out in 2005. I just can’t remember any of them right now.

Let’s check-out the multiplex cinema scene from this month 15 years ago. I saw “War Of The Worlds”, “Rebound”, “Bewitched”, and “Wedding Crashers”. Surprisingly I rated “Rebound” as the only 4-star movie back then. That’s the one that starred Martin Lawrence as a former college basketball coach who got fired because of his bad temper. So he went to coach his former junior high school’s basketball team with great success. Nope. I don’t remember that movie. I had to look it up on Wikipedia.

You know sometimes history is not pretty – especially our own personal history. 2005 was not a good year for me; yet, I choose to look back at it once a month this year. It was a part of me. It existed. You can’t make a better future if you ignore or deny history – if you forget where you came from. Yeah 2005 was a dark year for me, but 2006 was coming, and there was light up ahead.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2000

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday June 18TH 2000:

“Higher” – Creed
“It’s Gonna Be Me” – ‘N Sync
“The One” – Backstreet Boys
“Back Here” – BBMak
“Oops ! … I Did It Again” – Britney Spears

Creed was at # 1 for the 5TH week in a row on this week exactly 20 years ago, and just below them – boy band – boy band – boy band – and teen pop star.

You know of the three boy bands BBMak were my favorite – and the most underrated. The British trio scored with a trio of hits on my chart – “Back Here” (# 3), “Still On Your Side” (# 11), and “Ghost Of You And Me” (# 13). A 4TH hit – “Out Of My Heart (Into Your Head)” – charted (nationally) too late in 2002 to make it onto my chart which had already flipped by that time from mainstream pop to electronic dance. That 4TH hit is my favorite of all of them, and it’s in medium rotation on my iPod Shuffles. (That’s right – I’m still rockin’ the iPod Shuffles a full decade after they peaked.)

So that was a fun pop chart back in the middle of June of 2000. Over at the multiplex I saw “Boys And Girls” – a forgettable Freddie Prinze, Jr. / Jason Biggs flick that had a lot of promise, but crash-landed. On the tube – “Survivor” debuted on CBS, and it was an instant out-of-the-box runaway summertime smash !

RETRO returns in 3 weeks, as I return back to July of 2005.
