My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2000

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday October 15TH 2000:

  1. “Country Grammar” – Nelly
  2. “You’re A God” – Vertical Horizon
  3. “With Arms Wide Open” – Creed
  4. “It’s My Life” – Bon Jovi
  5. “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)” – 98°

Well that was quite the eclectic Top 5 back in 2000. I had raunchy hip hop at the top (cleaned-up for the radio), 2 songs about God almost 6 years before I knew God, Bon Jovi’s final big chart hit, and a Latin-like ballad from boy band 98°. That Bon Jovi track still sounds great 20 years later. I hear it almost every day via my iPod Shuffles at work. It was my # 4 hit of all of #Y2K. It spent 26 weeks in a row on my chart from June to December.

At the movies I saw the memorable “Meet The Parents” back on October 21ST 2000. It was 1 of 27 movies I saw in 2000 – a new record up to that point. So far in 2020 I’ve only seen 2 movies – the lowest since 1995.

This is my final “look back” at 2000. Big changes are coming to RETRO starting next month and into December. I’ll be removing 20 years ago from the monthly rotation, and I’ll be adding 25 years ago and 35 years ago. My hit music chart began 35 years ago next month in England, and 25 years ago this month it was resurrected after a 3-year hiatus. The beginnings of both of these distinct eras are intriguing, and I’m looking forward to looking back at these music memories of my life.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

I Just Flew To And From Texas, And Boy Are My Arms Tired !

For the first time in 10 months – and first time during the COVID-19 pandemic – I flew the friendly skies between South Florida and North Texas on September 24TH and October 01ST (both Thursdays).

Aside from the “new normal” of constantly wearing a face mask while inside the airports and on the airplanes everything else was close to the way it’s always been. Security was the same. You still had to remove everything from your pockets and take your shoes off. You still had to remove laptops and tablets and liquids from your carry-on bags.

I tried something new for all of my flights. I checked-in via my airline’s iOS app up to 24 hours in advance, and I even paid for my baggage on the app. I used an electronic boarding pass. Once I got to the airports I simply walked-up to a kiosk, scanned my boarding pass, printed my baggage tag, slipped it on my baggage, and turned it in at the counter. It all worked flawlessly. One of the advantages of doing all of that electronically is that the app gives you a current location status of your checked-in baggage. I didn’t have to worry whether or not my baggage was on the same airplane as I was on. I knew it was. I’ll be going electronic on all future flights.

My flight from #MIA to #DFW early in the morning (boarding began a little before 5 AM) was jam-packed at or near 100% capacity. Social distancing only applied up until the point that you entered the aircraft. After that you were pretty much piled on top of each other. I actually took a short follow-on flight from #DFW to #SPS (Wichita Falls), and that flight was perhaps 30% full. #SocialDistancing

A week later on the return trip back to #MIA (out of #DFW) my mid-morning to mid-afternoon flight was once again at or near 100% capacity, and it was a Boeing 777 ! I was actually blessed with extra legroom on this flight, as I was directly behind the main cabin restrooms. Seats were 10 across, and I was in 1 of the 4 middle seats.

Air traffic is down about 70% from last year, and one of the advantages of that are most flights are departing their gates, taking-off, landing, and arriving at their gates early – before their scheduled times. That was the case for all 3 of my flights. At both #MIA and #DFW it was quite eerie to see so few people walking around inside the terminals. At #MIA there were parking spaces available starting at ground level in their main parking garage. I had never seen that before. I pulled-in to a parking space less than a minute after entering.

Want something to eat and drink while inflight ? You’ll get an individually-sealed plastic bag with a small package of cookies and a small bottled water inside. No coffee. No soda. No snack boxes for $5. Those days are over.

Finally it just wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t bring back this gem from the classic days of this blog. This is the way flying used to be en route to Miami, and then once you got here – it was #GoGo time !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 191

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday October 11TH 2020:

TW LW WKS SONG TITLE ARTIST / SITE
1 1 9 God So Loved We The Kingdom
2 2 7 Rise Up (Lazarus) Cain
3 3 6 No Hold On Me Matty Mullins
4 8 8 Who Am I NeedToBreathe
5 5 6 This Is What We Live For Big Daddy Weave
6 1 Truth Be Told Matthew West
7 10 2 Start Right Here Casting Crowns
8 9 2 Jericho Andrew Ripp
9 6 6 Into The Sea (It’s Gonna Be OK) Tasha Layton
10 1 You Keep Hope Alive Mandisa Ft. Jon Reddick

# 1 This Week In:
2019 – “Fear No More” – Building 429
2018 – “Only Jesus” – Casting Crowns
2017 – “The Gospel” – Ryan Stevenson

We The Kingdom are still at # 1 on my chart with my favorite song on the radio. It’s their 5TH week at the top for “God So Loved”. That’s makes it my longest-running # 1 smash since June when The Afters spent 6 weeks at # 1 with “I Will Fear No More”.

My favorite male solo artist – Matthew West – is back with his 5TH hit in 3 years. His first 4 hits all hit # 1 or # 2 (“All In”), and his new one – “Truth Be Told” – could very well be on its way to the top as well. It’s actually been hanging around online for about a year now, but it’s new to Christian radio over the past couple of months. It’s from his “Brand New” album. (That’s the name of it.)

Check-out the official music video for “Truth Be Told” either below or over on YouTube.

After two postponements in 2020 his Southwest Florida concert supporting Casting Crowns (on their “Only Jesus” tour) is back on the docket for March of 2021, and I’ll (hopefully) be there to enjoy a night of great music for the Lord.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again this upcoming weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. I’m also on Twitter and Flickr.

Be blessed my friends !  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Sunday Scripture

It’s Sunday October 11TH 2020, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us praise and worship and celebrate Christ our Savior on this day – and on every day that He blesses us with.

It’s Pastor Appreciation Month, and on this 2ND Sunday of October it’s specifically Pastor Appreciation Day. Church families all around the world will honor their Pastor(s) today. We will do so at my church – Living Waters Full Gospel Church. I love my Pastor of the past 5½ years, and he has led me well with knowledge and understanding of God’s Truth. He has allowed me to minister and preach to our church family every week, and he has encouraged me to spread the Gospel and evangelize to the world.

I’ve been blessed as a Minister for almost 11 years now. I was given the opportunity to start hosting and leading Sunday morning services 11 years ago this month at my previous church, and I seized the opportunity. I enjoyed my time on stage there, and I was surrounded by some great leaders including my former Lead Pastor and his Mom and Dad. I grew exponentially during that time from a baby Christian to a church leader.

You have to stay humble when you lead a church, and never get comfortable. If you’re too comfortable then you’re not trying hard enough. It’s all about God first – and then it’s about your brothers and sisters of your church family. You must care for them. You must lead them well. You must guide and direct them towards Christ.

Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work, and build up the church – the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord – measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
