Match Game ’74

Earlier this year I stumbled across Match Game reruns on Game Show Network. I wondered why I wasn’t recording them. (GSN airs 2 episodes back-to-back at 1:00 and 1:30 ET weekday afternoons.) It’s perhaps my favorite game show of all-time – hosted by my favorite game show host of all-time – Gene Rayburn !

I remember my Dad watching it in the afternoon after I got home from school. He’d be laughing hysterically at times. Of course I was 7 and 8 and 9, so I didn’t understand the fast-paced and sometimes risqué humor. I think I was mostly interested in hearing the quirky yet repetitive theme music that played all throughout each show.

I picked-up on the reruns of Match Game several years later as a teenager in the early-1980s. “The Match Game / Hollywood Squares Hour” in 1983 and 1984 on NBC was a favorite to watch at home after school.

I’ve watched most of the reincarnations of Match Game over the years. I even like the current ABC prime-time version with Alec Baldwin as host. But nothing comes close to the original star-studded big-money Match Game on CBS in the 1970s. (Although that run was actually a remake of a much lamer and tamer 1960s version.)

Over the past several months I’ve watched a majority of the episodes that aired sequentially during the latter-half of 1976 as “Match Game ’76”. I say a majority of them because GSN actually skipped-over a bunch of them – probably because they included content that is considered too politically incorrect or insensitive for 2021 television viewers. (What was OK 45 years ago is no longer OK today.) I was actually disappointed when GSN recently “started over” and went back to episodes from the Summer of 1974 as “Match Game ’74” instead of continuing forward into 1977. But as it turns out those earlier episodes seem a bit fresher and funnier than those of 2 years later. (The show was still fairly new in 1974, whereas by late-1976 it was starting to become a bit stale.)

I’ll keep watching these old Match Game reruns. They make me laugh more than pretty much everything else on TV today. It’s fun to look-in at America at a simpler more innocent time in our history. I would even say that it was a friendlier time in our history – back when we could actually joke and laugh with each other without fear of offending or retaliating.

It’s the start of a fresh new weekend here on my blog. Be sure to check-out #TravelThursday tomorrow, as I continue to tell you all about my [blank] !

HEART OF THE FATHER – There’s no change in my Top 3 this week from last week, as MercyMe, Crowder, and Jordan St. Cyr hold firm at their respective chart positions. But there could be a big change with that next week, as I have 2 big movers into my Top 5 this week. Debut artist / Worship Pastor / singer-songwriter Ryan Ellis is up 5 big notches to # 4 this week. I love hearing his song on the radio. I love humming it after hearing it. I love singing its lyrics over and over again:

♫ Jesus – Your name is power
It’s breath, and living water
And Your Spirit guides me
To the heart of the Father
Let Your praise ring louder
Every day and every hour
‘Cause Your Spirit guides me
To the heart of the Father ♫

Sunday Scripture

Greetings my friends. It is Sunday December 12TH 2021, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us celebrate this great new day of believing, following, trusting, loving, and being more like our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

I’m preaching a full sermon this morning to my church family. I’ll be preaching on being “Holy & Redeemed” from Peter’s first letter. I’m looking forward to sharing with my brothers and sisters what God has placed on my heart today.

Today is the 3RD Sunday of Advent – also known as “Gaudete Sunday”. (“Gaudete” is pronounced “GOW-day-tay”.) Gaudete means “rejoice”. This day reminds us of the joy that is to come. We remember the hope we have because of the coming of our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ – our King of Kings.

As the Bible says in Paul’s Letter to the Philippian church:

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again – rejoice !  Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember – the Lord is coming soon. (4:4-5)

(And those 2 verses come right before these 2 memory verses.)

Don’t worry about anything. Instead – pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace – which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (4:6-7)

So Happy Gaudete Sunday. It’s Rejoice Sunday !  Rejoice today !  Rejoice every day !  You are not guaranteed the next day, so if you wake up tomorrow – REJOICE !

This is the day that our LORD has made. Let us – do what ? – rejoice. Let us be glad in it.

If you wish to learn more about the God I know then stay tuned to #SundayScripture. Tomorrow it’s #Top10Monday, as I present my personal Top 10 hits this week that honor our God Almighty on the radio.

Thank you for reading my blog for this day, and may:

The LORD bless you, and keep you.
The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1996

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 25 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday December 08TH 1996:

  1. “Love Rollercoaster” – Red Hot Chili Peppers
  2. “Head Over Feet” – Alanis Morissette
  3. “I’ve Finally Found Someone” – Barbra Streisand & Bryan Adams
  4. “Let’s Make A Night To Remember” – Bryan Adams
  5. “Please Don’t Go” – No Mercy

That was the Top 5 of my Top 30 chart of the 50TH week of 1996.

Red Hot Chili Peppers scored a surprise # 1 smash with their wild cover of “Love Rollercoaster” (from the “Beavis And Butt-Head” movie). It was my favorite #RHCP track. It was the perfect song for U.S. Top 40 radio late in 1996 during the afternoon and evening hours. I also liked the original (and funkier) late-1975 / early-1976 version from Ohio Players.

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 30 years ago to December 1991. The King Of Pop was on top.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !
