Sunday Scripture

On this 522ND and final Sunday of the 2010s I did what I’ve done for about 475 of those 522 Sundays, and that is to praise, worship, and celebrate our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ with my brothers and sisters of my church family.

I opened the service with God’s Word from First Thessalonians Chapter 5 (9 to 11):

For God decided to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ – not to pour out His anger on us. He died for us so that we can live with Him forever – whether we are dead or alive at the time of His return. So encourage each other and build each other up – just as you are already doing.

We had an unusually well-attended Sunday morning service for the final Sunday of the year – during the peak of holiday vacation time. In fact it was actually one of our biggest crowds of the year !

Today I led with my 30TH sermon over the past 3 years and 3 months. It was a groundbreaking sermon for me personally, and one that I was most nervous about. It’s the first time I went unscripted. I essentially had no idea what I was going to say until I actually said it. I used Internet memes to tell the story of how great our God is.

Earlier this year I began saving, collecting, and organizing Internet memes – mostly from Facebook. I then came up with the idea of preaching an entire sermon based solely on memes. Then I decided that it was a silly idea – perhaps even corny. Then I kept thinking about it, and praying about the best way to have a few dozen memes tell the story that I wanted to tell without the usual full manuscript that I write, edit, rewrite, enhance, finalize, rehearse, and print for each of my typical sermons.

I preached “Ways & Memes” today. It lasted a little over 45 minutes, and I think that it went fairly well considering I was out of my comfort zone at the pulpit. It can be rather risky giving me a wireless mic and 45 minutes to preach without a script, but I managed to do so without saying anything controversial.

My next sermon is already half-written, and it’s titled “Church & State”. I hope to preach it to my church family in January or February. Meanwhile the saving, collecting, and organizing of Internet memes continues on. I’ll start compiling a new batch for “Ways & Memes 2” later in 2020.

Back In Business

If you’re a regular reader, and you have a very keen eye, and you noticed that my blog posts this past Sunday and Monday looked and felt just a wee-bit different than normal – then you were right. I wrote, compiled, and posted those two blog posts via my iPad (latest model) rather than via my traditional desktop computer system (with monitor, keyboard and mouse). I’m not used to using my new iPad as an actual computer, but I was forced to do just that for several days this week. (It actually worked out much better than expected.)

I had to use my iPad (and iPhone) as computers because I awoke on Sunday morning to the dreaded Windows 10 blue screen of death (“critical process died”) on my traditional computer ! I was also receiving horrifying “1720-SMART Hard Drive detects imminent failure” errors upon bootup. That’s right – disaster struck out of nowhere. Nevertheless I remained surprisingly calm, cool, and collective during the ordeal.

The next day (Monday) I took my computer over to Best Buy’s Geek Squad. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and professional from start to finish, and within 24 hours they had my computer up-and-running with a brand new hard drive installed and all of my folders and files backed-up onto it.

I’m back in business. I have a lot of configuring to do now (since it’s just like using a new computer), but I don’t mind configuring programs. I’ll probably configure them better than ever before. It doesn’t appear that I’ve lost anything at all. It’s a miracle !

The next time disaster strikes with my computer system (or iPad) I shall not hesitate to take it to my new friends over at the Geek Squad. They did good work !

So an all-new weekend of blogging has begun. I’ll be back tomorrow (Friday) night with “My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2009”. Tonight I’m headed up to Fort Lauderdale to see “Weird Al” Yankovic LIVE in concert. I’ve been a fan since I was 16 years old. (Now I’m 52.) I’ll post my review of that show tomorrow night.

It’s the 118TH week of this 3RD era of my personal hit music chart – and Mack Brock scores his debut solo hit on my chart with “Greater Things” – the track that kicked-off a night of positive, encouraging, and inspirational music at the Hertz Arena in Estero Florida. After Mack Brock – Amanda Lindsey Cook rocked the house – and then Hillsong UNITED took over from there for the next 2 hours and 20 minutes. It was an awesome concert that surely glorified God. I believe that lives were saved on that glorious night.

Tonight marks my 26TH anniversary online. Early in the morning (after Midnight) on May 21ST 1993 (a Friday) in Melbourne Florida I went online as “Captain Airwaves” on my own MS-DOS based electronic bulletin board system – MANx CAT BBS. It was hosted on my new 486SX / 25 desktop computer system at the time. It quickly became one of the most popular bulletin board systems for message posting within the local Melbourne / Palm Bay / Cocoa Beach telephone calling area, and it was the place to meet, greet, and chat with such legendary characters collectively known as the MANxsters. We were part of the original social media of Melbourne Florida !

That BBS led to its World Wide Web spinoff – MANx On The Net – and that led to my longtime web site – MASSIVESMASH.COM – which hosted the 14+ year 2ND era of my personal hit music chart. After the web site ran its course I ventured over to Myspace (that didn’t last long), and then WordPress (2007), Twitter (2009), Facebook (2013), and then back here to WordPress (last year).

It’s been a crazy ride online over these past 26 years, and I’m still having the time of my life, so let’s keep this going. Let’s keep moving forward on this fantastic journey towards God’s bright light at His golden gates.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend – 5 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, and a special blog post on Tuesday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Behind The Scenes

Happy Thursday my friends ! It’s the start of an all-new blog weekend. I generally post new blogs on Thursday mornings, Friday nights, Sunday afternoons, and Monday nights (U.S. East Coast time). My Friday, Sunday, and Monday blogs all have the same respective format and structure each weekend – while my Thursday blog is a free-for-all where I blog about whatever comes to me in the moment. I usually have no idea what I’ll blog about on my Thursday blog until I actually get going with my fingers on the keyboard. (Yes – I still do most of my online activity via a traditional desktop computer system with a keyboard and a mouse – an hp Pavilion in fact. I’ve been using a series of hp Pavilions going back to the 1990s.)

I don’t get political online (or offline for that matter). I don’t discuss politics with anyone really. I have my own personal opinions and viewpoints on just about everything, and some of them are quite radical – on both ends of the political spectrum. Some are rather centrist. I’m really all over the place. I left Facebook after nearly 5 years because it got too political over there. Now I still lurk on Facebook because many of my friends from afar only utilize Facebook, and I wish to stay in-touch with them on all things non-political. I’ve recently come very close to expressing my viewpoint on a few key political issues on Facebook and Twitter, as it’s just so easy to do so – to be pulled-in to a discussion. Once I realized what I did I quietly backed myself out of the discussion. I’d rather talk about fun things on social media – like food and travel.

I spend most of my social media time here on WordPress (for blogging), Twitter (for tweeting), and Flickr (for photokeeping). I’ve been on WordPress since 2007, Twitter since 2009, and Flickr since 2011. I promote my blog on Twitter, and I promote my tweets here on WordPress. I also promote my photos here on WordPress. Collectively my WordPress, Twitter, and Flickr make-up my online ministry – CountUp Ministries. This blog serves as the flagship of CountUp Ministries at http://www.revchrismday.com.

When I’m at home I spend much of my time online, but when I’m not online I’m watching some of my favorite television shows, and I’m spending time with my Lord & Savior Jesus Christ reading and studying His Word and writing sermons based on what I’ve read and studied. I usually get the call to preach a full sermon about once per month, so I’m always ready with at least one – preferably two sermons that are ready to go. I’ve got my next two sermons already written, so I’ll probably start working on a new sermon this weekend. (Unless I get the call to preach this Sunday. If that’s the case then I’ll select one of my two sermons, enhance it, finalize it, and rehearse it.)

Well there’s a little “Behind The Scenes” action for you. I didn’t know how this blog post would go, but there it is. That’s how I write my Thursday blog. It’s really spontaneous. I’ll be back tomorrow night with my regular weekly Friday night blog – a venture back in time via the music soundtrack of my life. We’ll check-out Sunday March 05TH 1989.
