Columbus Day Weekend

It’s the start of a fresh new weekend here on my blog with 4 brand new blog posts – starting with this one. Weekends always start on Thursdays and end on Mondays here at “Saturday Night Retro”.

Monday is Columbus Day here in the U.S., and it’s Thanksgiving Day up in Canada. Enjoy the long weekend and the holiday – wherever you are.

Today after work I’m gonna go see one of the biggest box office comedy smash hits in history – “Crazy Rich Asians“. I’ll be seeing it in its 51ST day of release. Most movies don’t make it past 21 days at the movie theatres. I’ve heard this movie packs in the laughs with a lot of love as well. Sounds like a fun 2 hours !

On Friday I’ll bring the #Retro back to this weekend in 1988. Saturday is my day of rest. I’ll be working on my next sermon – a standalone sermon on Cain (of Cain & Abel fame). My message series on the Book Of James will resume in December or January. I’ll also be working on Communion which I’ll be leading my church family in this Sunday. I’m back with “Sunday Scripture” in the afternoon, and then on Monday it’s my brand new Top 10 weekly hit music chart.

So that’s a preview of my weekend. Thank You for reading or following my blog !

Burt Reynolds & Football

It’s the start of a fresh new weekend, and this Thursday night blog is always the most difficult to write because I usually don’t know what I’m going to write about until my fingers hit the keyboard at 75 WPM. My Friday, Sunday, and Monday blogs are always the same – hit music charts on both ends with Scripture in the center.

I got home from work early this afternoon, and I quickly discovered via Facebook that Burt Reynolds had passed away this morning at 82. I liked him. I saw his “Smokey And The Bandit” and “Cannonball Run” movies for the first time ever with friends in my (Air Force) dorm when I was 18 years old several years after the movies were released. We laughed hysterically into the night. I decided then that Burt Reynolds was one of my favorite comedic actors. I once visited his museum in Jupiter Florida (about 125 miles from my home), and it was quite the unusual experience from the very start when I entered the premises “improperly”. I’ll share that amusing story with you in a future blog.

NFL Football (regular season) begins tonight on NBC with “Football Night In America”, and then of course all day on Sunday. I’ll be busy keeping up with it every Sunday through the start of February. Aside from the WWE it’s the only sport and league that I actively follow during its season. I’m a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. (That’s where I grew up from 1969 to 1985.)

Hail to the Redskins !
Hail Victory !
Braves on the Warpath !
Fight for old D.C. !

Run or pass and score. — We want a lot more !
Beat ’em. Swamp ’em. Touchdown. — Let the points soar !
Fight on !  Fight on !  ‘Til you have won — Sons of Washington !

Rah !  Rah !  Rah !
Hail to the Redskins !
Hail Victory !
Braves on the Warpath !
Fight for old D.C. !

My 51ST Birthday

IMG_3090

This past Tuesday June 05TH was my 51ST Birthday !  I celebrated the day by taking the day off from work and taking advantage of free stuff close to home. I started at my neighborhood Denny’s where I enjoyed a free Build Your Own Grand Slam. Later in the day I saw a free movie at my neighborhood movie theatre. I saw “Life Of The Party” (starring Melissa McCarthy). Following a post-movie haircut I capped the day with a free panini and a venti mocha Frappuccino at my neighborhood Starbucks.

Two days earlier (on Sunday) my church family sang “Happy Birthday” to me, and then a group of us went out to Lunch at Red Lobster – one of my favorite restaurants. I think another group from my church family wants to take me out to Lunch this coming Sunday after service. I accept !

Yesterday (Wednesday) at work a bunch of my coworkers surprised me with the beautiful birthday cake (pictured above). How they kept it a secret from me remains a mystery – and quite an accomplishment !

I’ve still got some more birthday freebees and discounts to enjoy, but they are good through the entire month of June. There’s a free Royal Red Robin Burger waiting for me at Red Robin. Gotta get my free pastry at Panera. I love the month of June !

The Major’s Top 10 Hits – Week 60

  1. “Freedom Hymn” – Austin French [# 2 last week / 3RD week on chart]
  2. “I Just Need U.” – TobyMac [4 / 3RD]
  3. “No One Like Our God” – Lincoln Brewster [1 / 13TH]
  4. “Grace Got You” – MercyMe [- / 1ST]
  5. “What A Friend” – Matt Maher [9 / 3RD]
  6. “Gracefully Broken” – Matt Redman Ft. Tasha Cobbs Leonard [3 / 17TH]
  7. “No Matter What” – Ryan Stevenson Ft. Bart Millard [- / 1ST]
  8. “Come To The Table” – Sidewalk Prophets [6 / 10TH]
  9. “Resurrection Power” – Chris Tomlin [7 / 9TH]
  10. “Reckless Love” – Cory Asbury [8 / 3RD]

Austin French scores the 19TH # 1 smash of the rebirth of this personal weekly music chart. His “Freedom Hymn” debuted high on the chart (# 3) just 2 weeks ago. I like the story behind the song (which you can see on his web site).

It’s a great week for Bart Millard as he secures two new spots on the chart – with his own band (one of my favorites) – and with a dude he and his band have been on tour with recently (Ryan Stevenson). Both of those tunes sound very retro from decades gone by. Bart’s life story shown in “I Can Only Imagine” is on the verge of surpassing $70 million at the domestic box office. That’s 10 times its budget. It’s one of the highest-grossing faith-based movies of all-time !

Yesterday in Miami I attended the Greater Miami Youth For Christ annual fundraising dinner. It was my 4TH in a row since 2015. They always put on a great inspirational program that definitely glorifies God. It’s frustrating seeing teens today on the wrong side of the law – with no guidance and direction. It’s awesome to see the teens that have been adopted by the Youth For Christ family. They have bright futures on their journeys forward, and Christ will lead them every step of the way if they continue to believe in Him and follow His lead.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me – you won’t have to walk in darkness – because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)
