Once upon a time in a decade far far away there lived this dude by the name of Shaun Cassidy. In 1977 when he was a mere 18-years-old he was one of the top music and television stars in the U.S.A. He was one-third of “The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew Mysteries” on ABC-TV on Sunday nights at 7 PM. He was on the cover of virtually every teen mag at the stores. And he was a teen-pop megastar sensation. He scored 3 TOP 10 gold-certified smash hits in a row that each spent 4 to 6 months in heavy rotation on the radio. This was the 3RD of those 3 hits that were all of the rage on Friday nights at roller discos everywhere. It’s “Hey Deanie” – as performed on “The Mike Douglas Show”.
Hey Suzanne Somers – How ’bout introducing the young cat for us ?
– It was clearly the coldest Sunday morning in Life Pointe Church history !
– It was 35°F at 8 AM, 36°F at 9 AM, 38°F at 10 AM – with wind chills in the 20s !
– Everyone ran into the movie theatre to get in on some HEAT ! – Lead Pastor Travis arrived all by himself without his wife and kids.
– It was rad to have Trav back on stage for the first time since before Christmas.
– He concluded our long-running “LoveWorn” message series.
– This morning’s message was subtitled “Love Worn In Community”.
– Community is not cheap or easy.
– It is foundational to the character of God.
– God created us in His image.
– He created us for a community-based Life.
– He gave us a purpose to live Life with one another.
– The church should not be a building.
– The church should be the living breathing body of a diverse group of people.
– Racial and financial status should be irrelevant within the church community.
– We must always be the church no matter where we are.
– A Godly community creates Life change and the miraculous.
– Now is the time at Life Pointe where you can take part in such a community.
– Life Group registration is happenin’ now !
– I registered for a Life Group on my connection card at the first service.
– You can also register online at life-pointe.com/lifegroups.
– There are about a dozen Life Groups to choose from on nearly every night.
– Pick one that’s convenient for you, and commit to it.
– It’s a critical part of your spiritual growth following Jesus Christ.
– You can’t walk this fantastic journey alone, and there’s no need to do so.
– Walk this journey with those who follow, believe, trust, and love Jesus Christ.
This morning’s message was based on the following Scripture out of the Good News of our Lord – Acts 2:42-47, Acts 20:20, Genesis 1:26, Genesis 28:3, Genesis 35:11, Hebrews 10:24-25, Philippians 2:4, Psalm 133, Romans 12:9-10, Romans 12:13.
Acts 2:42-47 (NLT, 2ND Ed.) The Believers Form A Community 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity – 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
It’s time to kick it with a fresh new year of the ‘Saturday Night Retro’. It’s a weekend tradition that I’ve been enjoying for a long time now via different mediums, formats, and names. 2010 actually marks the 25TH anniversary of the ‘Retro’ and all of its various predecessors.
It’s hard to believe that the entire decade of the 2000s is now officially ‘Retro’. 2000 seems so long ago now. 1990 was 20 years ago. That gives me the chills just thinking about it. The 1980s began 30 years ago. Now I’m sweating. I feel so old now !
Here on ‘Saturday Night Retro’ I’ll alternate between the decades from the 1970s through the 2000s with a few extra surprises thrown in for good times.
Tonight flashback with me over 35 years ago to the Autumn of 1974. I was entering the 2ND grade back then at St. Matthias Apostle Catholic School in Lanham / Seabrook Maryland. I remember my teachers as Sister Mary Laura (the mean one) and Sister Mary Josephine (the funny one). This was the start of my 2ND and final year in Catholic school. The following year I was pulled out of it, and sent walking to the county’s public school system.
On the radio Linda Kelly was on in the middle of the afternoon on WPGC AM & FM Morningside out of Washington D.C., and this was the rockin’ # 1 smash all across the free nation. It’s Canadian / Lebanese teen pop idol (at the time) Andy Kim, and this may have been one of the cheesiest bubblegum pop nuggets of its time. You’re gonna get a sugar rush just listening to this one !
– This morning we met corporately for the final time of the year and decade.
– Youth Pastor Mark S. filled in admirably for Lead Pastor Travis.
– Mark continued our “LoveWorn” message series and campaign.
– It was all about ‘Thread Bare Love’.
– It’s Love worn by us for others – our brothers, sisters, and neighbours.
– It’s comfortable, warm, and used – but still very full of Love for all.
– It’s appropriate everywhere – at home, school, work, stores, and in traffic.
– You don’t need to preach to teach what God is all about.
– The Bible says Love comes from God, for God is Love.
– Many people of this world don’t follow God because of His followers.
– Many of His followers don’t Love like God Loves.
– God instructs us to Love all of His creations – even those who don’t Love us.
– Love never wears out – it’s forever.
1 John 4:7-21 (NLT, 2ND Ed.) – Loving One Another 7 Dear friends, let us continue to Love one another, for Love comes from God. Anyone who Loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 But anyone who does not Love does not know God, for God is Love. 9 God showed how much He Loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal Life through Him. 10 This is real Love — not that we Loved God, but that He Loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God Loved us that much, we surely ought to Love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God. But if we Love each other, God lives in us, and His Love is brought to full expression in us. 13 And God has given us His Spirit as proof that we live in Him and He in us. 14 Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. 16 We know how much God Loves us, and we have put our trust in His Love. God is Love, and all who live in Love live in God, and God lives in them. 17 And as we live in God, our Love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face Him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. 18 Such Love has no fear, because perfect Love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect Love. 19 We Love each other because He Loved us first. 20 If someone says, “I Love God,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don’t Love people we can see, how can we Love God, whom we cannot see ? 21 And He has given us this command: Those who Love God must also Love their Christian brothers and sisters.
