Austin French scores his 2ND consecutive # 1 smash here on my chart, and he does it in a much different way than his debut smash “Freedom Hymn”. That was a short-lived (8-weeks overall) hit that debuted at # 3, went to # 2 a week later, and then ascended to # 1 in its 3RD week where it stayed for 4 weeks in a row. This time he spent 13 weeks to reach # 1 with “Born Again”, and it stopped at every chart position along the way except for # 8 and # 2.

Summer has begun, and I’m continuing my annual tradition. I’ll be crunching the numbers all summer long, and on a special compilation chart on Tuesday September 03RD I’ll present my Top 10 hits of the Summer Of 2019 based on the 15 weekly charts between now and then.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again next weekend (which starts in just 48 hours) – 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1989

Every Friday night I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week). Here it is – for the week ending Sunday May 28TH 1989:

“Baby Don’t Forget My Number” – Milli Vanilli

It’s another strong Top 5 chart from exactly 30 years ago this Memorial Day Weekend here in the U.S.A. 4 of those 5 hits are in active rotation on my iPod Shuffles at work. The one lone song that’s not – “Into The Night” – has just been added to my Wish List on iTunes. I had to listen to several different versions of that track to pick out the one that I remembered from 1989 (which was actually from 1980). It’s Benny Mardones’ signature song, and he still performs it LIVE in concert. The song has evolved over the years, but it’s the original version that tops them all. Yep – that’s the version that a young almost 22-year-old Chris cranked-up on Y-100 while driving up and down Dade County Florida’s U.S. 1 / South Dixie Highway in his red 1989 Geo Spectrum sedan.

Well it’s the last Friday night of May of 1989, so what’s on TV tonight ? Well obviously I’m watching “Full House” – followed by “Perfect Strangers”- followed by “Mr. Belvedere” (my favorite TV show back then). “Just The Ten Of Us” was on after that, but I didn’t really care for it all that much. Prime Time Television was a whole lot more fun back in 1989 !

It’s the 118TH week of this 3RD era of my personal hit music chart – and Mack Brock scores his debut solo hit on my chart with “Greater Things” – the track that kicked-off a night of positive, encouraging, and inspirational music at the Hertz Arena in Estero Florida. After Mack Brock – Amanda Lindsey Cook rocked the house – and then Hillsong UNITED took over from there for the next 2 hours and 20 minutes. It was an awesome concert that surely glorified God. I believe that lives were saved on that glorious night.

Tonight marks my 26TH anniversary online. Early in the morning (after Midnight) on May 21ST 1993 (a Friday) in Melbourne Florida I went online as “Captain Airwaves” on my own MS-DOS based electronic bulletin board system – MANx CAT BBS. It was hosted on my new 486SX / 25 desktop computer system at the time. It quickly became one of the most popular bulletin board systems for message posting within the local Melbourne / Palm Bay / Cocoa Beach telephone calling area, and it was the place to meet, greet, and chat with such legendary characters collectively known as the MANxsters. We were part of the original social media of Melbourne Florida !

That BBS led to its World Wide Web spinoff – MANx On The Net – and that led to my longtime web site – MASSIVESMASH.COM – which hosted the 14+ year 2ND era of my personal hit music chart. After the web site ran its course I ventured over to Myspace (that didn’t last long), and then WordPress (2007), Twitter (2009), Facebook (2013), and then back here to WordPress (last year).

It’s been a crazy ride online over these past 26 years, and I’m still having the time of my life, so let’s keep this going. Let’s keep moving forward on this fantastic journey towards God’s bright light at His golden gates.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1999

Good solid pop music back then – with Garbage being the anomaly.

I like to do this from time to time. Looking back at my checkbook register is a lot of fun. Back then I wrote a whole lot more checks than I do today. (The only checks I typically write today are my weekly tithes to my church.)

So 20 years ago this week I got paid. I got paid today too. My net pay back then was about 58.6% of what it was today. That’s good progress.

My telephone bill for a month of service 20 years ago was $52.85. Last weekend I paid $78.99. You may be thinking, “Why do you even have a telephone bill ? It’s 2019 !” There are many logical reasons why I still have an “old-school” land-line telephone. I get very few telemarketing calls on my cell phone – because I rarely give out my cell phone number. I give out my longtime land-line number instead. The telemarketers call that number. I also live deep in the heart of hurricane country. During bad storms cell phone towers lose power, get damaged, or topple over. Most of our standard telephone lines are underground and operate continuously during and after hurricanes.

I paid my Chevron bill during this week 20 years ago. Gas was cheap back then – about $1.25 per gallon. It’s more than twice that amount today, but I’m not complaining about $2.70 per gallon. I remember when it was approaching $5 per gallon. I’m planning a road-trip in about 4 months from South Florida to North Texas and back. That’s about 3,000 miles. At $2.70 per gallon and about 42 miles per gallon with my car that’s a little less than $200 in gas. I got this !

You know 1999 was not that good of a year for me – privately and professionally. It was a rather forgettable year, or I’ve just chosen to forget about that year over time. The music of yesteryear brings back those memories – good and bad. As Shania said, “That Don’t Impress Me Much”. I feel the same about 1999.
