I’m Sick ! I Ate A Cricket !

NO – I didn’t really eat a cricket. That’s actually an inside-joke between me and my brother regarding one of our childhood cats.

I ate no such cricket, but I am sick – AGAIN. I am now dealing with my unprecedented 4TH cold in just a little over 6 months (since the last few days of October 2007). It’s also my 2ND cold in just a little over 6 weeks (since Good Friday / Easter Sunday weekend).

I felt the arrival of the cold via the typical first-stage sore throat this past Tuesday afternoon. The sore throat actually dissipated a bit the next day on Wednesday, but my voice was still a bit on the weak side. I had actually planned to stay in last night in lieu of attending Life Group, but I decided at the last minute to go ahead and get some food inside of me and join my friends (since we were doing it at the Atlanta Bread Company anyway). It was the very first time that we did Life Group in a public gathering place. It was a very unique setting, but I definitely prefer having it in a more private intimate setting.

My cold got worse last night and into this morning, and I had a restless and sleepless night as a result of it. If it weren’t for an urgent weekly meeting that I not only attend but also facilitate I probably would have used 8 out of my 1,300+ hours of sick leave accumulated and called in sick. I managed to stay at work for 6 hours this morning, and then I came home at 12 noon.

And so here I am – at home – sick. Once upon a time I used to get a cold about every 18 months to 2 or even 3 years. Now I’m working on my 4TH cold in just 6 months. Back then my rare colds lasted in excess of two weeks. Nowadays these colds come and go within a matter of several days. That’s thanks to my good buddies Mr. Vitamin C, Dr. Airborne, y Señor Zicam. (I refuse to take any cold medications.)

The Fortune Cookie Message Of The Week Club

I received two fortune cookies with my take-out Lunch this morning:

‘You emerge victoriously from the maze you’ve been traveling in.’
(This is the second Tuesday in a row that I received this particular fortune.)

Fortune Cookie

‘Two small jumps are sometimes better than one big leap.’
(So true. So true. It doesn’t matter how long it takes for you to get there. The important thing is that you eventually arrive – even if it takes you me 40 years to get there.)

Tuesday Night Grab Bag O’ Thoughts

It’s the most spontaneous blog entry of the week – totally unrehearsed:

1.  I have nothing personal against bugs. I just don’t want them on me or in my home. Bugs can be very useful to humans. The’re not useful when the’re on my skin or in my bathtub.

2.  I picked up a business card of one of my favourite Homestead Chinese Restaurants at Lunch today. They did a very nice job with them. I especially adore the phrase ‘we open late’ on the card. It’s not that they actually open late (in the day), but that the’re open late (at night).

3.  Incidentally I have a new business card nowadays to replace my previous one. If you want one then feel free to ask me for one the next time that you see me.

4.  My next vacation is booked. I’m flying to Dallas Texas at the end of June, and then me and my brother are driving from there to San Antonio Texas where we will literally spend 3 days on the River Walk. He’ll be attending a conference there, and I’ll be relaxing. After the conference we’ll be driving back to Dallas, and I’ll be flying back home from there on the 4TH Of July.

5.  Homestead has piles and piles of dirt everywhere. Everything appears to be under construction. The largest outdoor shopping mall in the history of Homestead is currently being built – all 400,000 square feet of it. Once it’s up-and-running Homestead will look and feel just like Kendall, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

6.  It takes me about 12 minutes to drive to work at 6 AM weekday mornings. It takes me about 50% longer – 18 minutes – to drive back home at 3 PM weekday afternoons. Homestead’s highways are 50% busier at 3 PM than they are at 6 AM.

7.  Travis and Kelly keep inviting me over to their home to watch “Survivor Micronesia“. I would accept their invitation if I were caught up with this season’s episodes. Right now I’m still 4 episodes behind. (The’re on tape.) This past weekend I unintentionally watched a ‘lost’ episode of “Survivor Fiji” from last year that I still had on tape (but never saw). It was actually a really good episode too.

8.  Europeans don’t understand why we’re complaining so much about spending up to $4 on a gallon of gas. They make much less money than we do on average, and they pay more than twice as much as we do for the equivalent of a gallon of gas. Once again to recap – the ratio of the cost per gallon of gas versus our average household income – is the lowest of any country in the entire world.

9.  I have never flown in an F-16 fighter jet, and I have no desire to do so. I get motion-sickness extremely easily.

10.  I used to own and operate a pop music web site that – in its heyday – was MASSIVE down under in Australia and New Zealand. Do I still have any fans remaining from there ?  If so then let me know. Identify yourselves !
