My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1985

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so it’s a special. Back in 1985 I was an 18-year-old USAF Airman Basic living in a dorm at Chanute AFB near Rantoul Illinois. In September I was in my 2ND month of technical school – learning how to do my future job. We were approaching the halfway point of our 12-week class. For the first 6 weeks class started early in the morning, and it continued until the middle of the afternoon. For the remaining 6 weeks we went to a “swing shift” schedule – starting in the middle of the afternoon, and continuing until late at night. That got us accustomed to the various schedules that we could face while working our job at our first permanent duty station.

I’m still having fun over on Facebook at the Chanute AFB Veterans page – enjoying the classic photos and reminiscing about my short time there on that base surrounded by cornfields. I wish I had photos to share, but sadly I didn’t own a camera or take pictures back then. I had a lot of fun though with my classmates and dormmates !

These were the hottest hits in the land exactly 35 years ago this weekend – for the week ending Sunday September 08TH 1985:

  1. “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man In Motion)” – John Paar
  2. “The Power Of Love” – Huey Lewis And The News
  3. “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” – Tina Turner
  4. “Freeway Of Love” – Aretha Franklin
  5. “Summer Of ’69” – Bryan Adams

Good solid pop / light-rock music set back then. That’s what played on my static-filled AM radio in my 1980 Chevy Citation (my first car). #MusicRadioWLSChicago

Next week on RETRO it’s back to my regularly-scheduled program. I’ll go back 15 years to the 2ND week of September of 2005.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday with 3 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 185

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday August 30TH 2020:

TW LW WKS SONG TITLE ARTIST / SITE
1 1 5 Miracles Colton Dixon
2 3 16 No Impossible With You I AM THEY
3 7 3 God So Loved We The Kingdom
4 8 2 The Blessing Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, Elevation Worship
5 2 11 There Was Jesus Zach Williams Ft. Dolly Parton
6 4 25 Alive & Breathing Matt Maher
7 5 20 Keep Me In The Moment Jeremy Camp
8 1 Rise Up (Lazarus) Cain
9 9 2 Who Am I NeedToBreathe

# 1 This Week In:
2019 – “Nobody (But Jesus)” – Casting Crowns Ft. Matthew West
2018 – “Who You Say I Am” – Hillsong Worship
2017 – “Broken Things” – Matthew West

Colton Dixon remains at # 1 for a 2ND week with my favorite song on the radio. In addition to the lyrics of “Miracles” I love its feel. I love its beat. It almost gets funky at one point during the song where I wish I had bongo drums to play along to the beat.

I AM THEY ease back up a notch to # 2 after slipping to # 3 last week with their former # 1 smash “No Impossible With You”. You know each summer there’s a sleeper smash that I never saw coming. It’s the song that will likely remind me (personally) of this summer season years from now. I think this is it. It’ll be interesting to see where this song lands on my special chart next Tuesday September 08TH when I #CountUp my Top 10 hits of the Summer of 2020 (from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend).

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again this upcoming weekend – with 5 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, and a special Tuesday edition. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. I’m also on Twitter and Flickr.

Be blessed my friends !  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday August 26TH 1990:

  1. “(I Can’t Live Without Your) Love And Affection” – Nelson
  2. “Unskinny Bop” – Poison
  3. “Can’t Stop Falling Into Love” – Cheap Trick
  4. “Epic” – Faith No More
  5. “My Kinda Girl” – Babyface

What an amazing Top 5 chart. I consider all 5 of those songs to be 5 of the greatest songs of my 53-year lifetime. They (among others) made-up the soundtrack of the greatest summer that ever existed for me prior to salvation in 2006.

My chart flipped that summer from Top 40 to Rock 40. You may remember Rock 40 as a late-’80s / early-’90s hybrid format of mainstream pop music and hard rock music – with a heavy concentration of the rock hits that crossed-over onto the pop chart. It was an awesome sound. Of course even during my Rock 40 chart era there were R & B, Hip Hop, and Dance hits sprinkled-in. That Babyface song was poppin’ back then !

I was a young and wild 23-year-old USAF SGT (E-4) back then living and working here in Homestead Florida – where I remain today. If this 53-year-old could go back in time and talk to that 23-year-old – first-of-all the conversation would be crazy. We would have a long talk. I would ultimately tell 23-year-old me to enjoy that great season while it lasts, for it will eventually end, and no other season will ever come close to it. As great as that season was – you will mourn parts of it. 16 summers from now you will have a supernatural experience that will change your life forever – and save it from certain death.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 184

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday August 23RD 2020:

TW LW WKS SONG TITLE ARTIST / SITE
1 3 4 Miracles Colton Dixon
2 1 10 There Was Jesus Zach Williams Ft. Dolly Parton
3 2 15 No Impossible With You I AM THEY
4 6 24 Alive & Breathing Matt Maher
5 7 19 Keep Me In The Moment Jeremy Camp
6 8 7 Revolutionary Josh Wilson
7 10 2 God So Loved We The Kingdom
8 1 The Blessing Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, Elevation Worship
9 1 Who Am I NeedToBreathe
10 1 Peace Be Still Hope Darst

# 1 This Week In:
2019 – “Nobody (But Jesus)” – Casting Crowns Ft. Matthew West
2018 – “Who You Say I Am” – Hillsong Worship
2017 – “Broken Things” – Matthew West

This week’s chart is quite the opposite of last week’s inactive chart. There are 3 new entries (most since 14 weeks ago), no non-movers, and a new # 1 smash.

Colton Dixon sings my new favorite song on the radio. I love the opening lyrics to “Miracles”. They remind me of my life 14 years ago:

♫ Ninety miles on the highway
Every day moving so fast
Taking all the wrong ways out
Never saw You coming
Stopping me in my tracks
Keeping me from the long way down ♫

YEP – That’s what Christ did for me. I never saw Him coming. He stopped me in my tracks. He performed a life-changing miracle on that day, and He hasn’t stopped since. They just happen like that.

Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes (married almost 6 years) team-up with Elevation Worship for “The Blessing” – a song that’s increasingly growing on me every time I hear it on the radio.

NeedToBreathe out of northwestern South Carolina are back with their 5TH hit on my chart – and their first in 18 months. They’ve been together for about 20 years, and they were actively releasing music to Christian radio during my “Salvation Era” (2006-2010), but none of it charted for me. When this chart was resurrected in February of 2017 they were one of the first bands that I got to know and enjoy. Their “Testify” debuted on my Week 3 chart of this current era.

And finally Hope Darst enters my chart for the first time with her debut hit “Peace Be Still”. It’s a song that I’ve been singing along to for several months now at home and in my car. It’s the title-track of Hope’s new album that was released this past Friday !

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again this upcoming weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.
