Sunday Scripture

Greetings my friends. It is Sunday July 24TH 2022, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us celebrate this great new day of believing, following, trusting, loving, and being more like our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.

This week it’s a change-of-pace #SundayScripture. There’s no sermon or meme this week. Just me sharing some future plans with you. I’ve already shared some of these plans on past editions of #TravelThursday.

I’ll be partially moving away from my hometown of the past nearly 35 years early next year (2023). I’m not moving too far away – just 3½ hours up the road – 186 miles to be exact. Initially I’ll be living at my new home for half the week – from Wednesday evening to Sunday morning. I’ll be living at my current home for the other half – from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday morning.

On Sunday mornings I’ll continue with my current church family. The only difference is that instead of a 10-minute commute it’ll be closer to a 3-hour and 10-minute commute early on Sunday mornings.

I’ve been with my current church family for going on 7½ years. I selected them as my second church based on word-of-mouth alone from a longtime friend. She was quite surprised when I showed up on that first Sunday morning. It worked out well. I’ve loved this small church family since the very start.

I selected my first church of 8 years based on extensive research online – not knowing what it was like to be a part of a church family. I knew nobody at my first church before I set foot in it. It worked out well. I learned quite early on that the church is not the building. The church is the living and breathing body – the family of believers and followers of Christ. We don’t go to – or leave from – church, but rather we bring the church in everything we do and everywhere we go, for we are the church.

In both cases the church family has been my only family here in South Florida.

Once I’m retired and settled full-time at my new home near Sebring Florida I’ll select my third church. I’ve only done a little bit of research online, but going forth it’ll likely be the way that I select my next church.

My first church was a small non-denominational church with Pentecostal roots that became huge quickly, lost about half of its congregation almost as quickly, and then slowly grew back again.

My second (current) church is a small non-denominational church with Pentecostal roots that has stayed small and steady over the past 7½ years.

My third church will be a small non-denominational church. Having experienced both small and big church families I much prefer the small church family. There are advantages and disadvantages of a small church family, but I believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I’ve matured and prospered in both. I’ll write about it again in a future blog post.

When I greet my church family during Praise & Worship I sometimes use Psalm 122:1 – I was glad when they said to me – “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

Selecting a church can be a difficult process. Walking into a new church for the first time can be intimidating. Walking into my very first church for the very first time as a born-again Christian – well that was one of the most courageous moments of my life. It also changed my life forever. It certainly changed my Sunday mornings for the better.

If you wish to learn more about the God I know then stay tuned to #SundayScripture. The best is yet to come !

Thank you for reading my blog for this day, and may:

The LORD bless you, and keep you.
The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1987

Hello again retro music fans. Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 35 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday July 26TH 1987:

  1. “A Little Boogie Woogie” – Shakin’ Stevens
  2. “La Bamba” – Los Lobos
  3. “Misfit” – Curiosity Killed The Cat
  4. “My Pretty One” – Cliff Richard
  5. “F.L.M.” – Mel & Kim

Some would say that the legendary Shakin’ Stevens jumped the shark with his Summer of 1987 hit – “A Little Boogie Woogie” – a cover of Gary Glitter’s wild track from a decade earlier, but it was one of the anthems of the greatest summer of my life – living and working in Gloucestershire England as a 20-year-old.

#Shaky kicked-off a special LIVE edition of “Top Of The Pops” on the BBC on Thursday July 09TH 1987, and the young 39-year-old got the nation dancing in unison via an over-the-top performance complete with back-up dancers. He did not do a “dad-dance”, but rather a very hip and frenetic dance that was quite worthy of the London nightclubs of the era. His performance of the 133 BPM track made an impact. The very next week it soared to # 1 on my chart, and it moved up 13 notches from # 26 to # 13 nationwide (BBC-Gallup). 2 weeks later Shaky did it again on “The Roxy” on ITV on Tuesday July 21ST 1987. 2 days after that he did it for the 2ND time (a rarity) on “Top Of The Pops” on Thursday July 23RD 1987. It peaked at # 12 nationwide the following week, and that’s as high as it got on the charts. Promotion for it ended after that.

It’s 35 years later, and I still love that song !

Every “Top Of The Pops” episode ended with a music video, so I’ll do the same here with “F.L.M.” – # 5 – 35 years ago:

Mel Appleby (1966-1990)

Next #RetroFriday I’ll go back 45 years ago to the end of July 1977. I’ll share which songs on “American Top 40” that Sunday July 31ST 1977 that I still hear almost every day via my iPod Shuffles that play at my desk at my workplace. I’ll also reveal which songs from that chart that I plan to buy immediately on iTunes.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going retro with me !

Naples Florida

Welcome back to #TravelThursday. Last week I wrote all about the first-half of my short one-day road-trip to and from Naples. This week – it’s the second-half of that fun day some 2½ hours away from home.

My next stop on my museum tour was the Naples Historical Society Historic Palm Cottage a couple of blocks from the beach along historic 12TH Avenue South.

Here’s what I wrote about it on TripAdvisor:

This was my 4TH of 4 museum stops in Naples on this day, and it was the highlight of my day. I was the only participant for the 1 PM tour, and the docent was still eager to give the tour. Very admirable. He was very knowledgeable on the history of the house and the surrounding neighborhood. The house was beautiful and interesting. After the 45-minute tour I watched the 25-minute video, and that was very informative. I then looked around the house one last time on my own before emerging out into the front porch. I talked to the docents out there for a little while about the house, the neighborhood, and my own plans for next year when I’ll transition from a long career into retirement and serving as a docent in a few museums in nearby Highlands County Florida. GREAT experience at the Palm Cottage !

This visit almost didn’t occur. Parking is at a premium in this area. Nearly all of it is for the nearby beach and pier. It costs money ($3 per hour), and vacant spaces can be rare or non-existent – even during low-season in July. When I arrived no spaces were available. I drove over to the nearby shopping center where there was plenty of available parking, but signs were also posted stating no beach or pier parking. I drove back over to the “legal” parking area, and I stumbled across a vacant parking space right in front of the Historic Palm Cottage. I paid $7.50 for 2½ hours of parking, and I’m glad I did, as I spent nearly 2 hours at the cottage itself enjoying the tour (guided and self), watching the video, and then talking to the docents.

My final stop in Naples was Tin City – a historic and quaint shopping and dining village right along the banks of the Gordon River. It’s been there for over 100 years. Nowadays it’s a small collection of mom-n-pop shops selling antiques, knick-knacks, souvenirs, clothing, candy, and food. They also have a few larger restaurants there. I enjoyed an early-Dinner at Pinchers (a local Southwest Florida seafood chain). I then picked-up some monkey bread from Mon”Key” Bread Factory.

It was a fun day in Naples. 2½ hours to get there. 7½ hours of fun while there. 2½ hours to get home. 230 miles total. I need to do it again – maybe when the weather turns cooler in the dry season. I definitely want to visit the Historic Palm Cottage again. They also do guided walking tours of the immediate neighborhood. They look very educational. In conjunction with my next visit to Naples I also want to visit nearby Marco Island and Everglades City.

Next #TravelThursday we’ll head to the beach – 1,100 miles up the coast in Ocean City Maryland. Let’s keep traveling together.
