Miles & Meters

Welcome back to #TravelThursday.  This past Sunday afternoon I surpassed 22,000 miles on my 2020 car. It took me 34½ months to get there. I reached the milestone in the southern part of my home county – Highlands County Florida.

The topography of Highlands County is quite interesting, and it explains its name.

My neighborhood – for example – is on a gentle slope, and it’s most noticeable after a thunderstorm when the water quickly runs and drains downhill from west to east along the culverts and into the lake. It starts at 43 meters (141 feet), and it runs down to 40 meters (131 feet). The large neighborhood to our west on the other side of U.S. 27 is as high as 52 meters (171 feet). In our northwestern part of Highlands County – the Lake Wales Ridge runs along the west side of U.S. 27. (Think of the Lake Wales Ridge as Florida’s little mountain chain along its spine.)

The highest elevations in Highlands County are in the southwestern part – south of Lake Placid closer to Venus – where the land peaks at 62 meters (203 feet). That’s where U.S. 27 rides along the top of the ridge. The land starts rising from 22 meters (72 feet) just as soon as you enter Highlands County from the south.

So – I got sidetracked there with the fascinating topography of my new home county, but isn’t that what blogging should be all about ? You write what comes to you in the moment – not knowing where your thinking mind and your typing fingers will lead you.

Well – (circling back) – I surpassed 22,000 miles on my car 32 days after I surpassed 21,000 miles on my car, and that was 18 days after I surpassed 20,000 miles on my car. So it was a slower 1,000 miles this time around. I’m settling-in to my new home here in the Heartland and the Highlands of Florida. The view is wonderful from up here on the Ridge !

Next #TravelThursday – I gotta cut loose – footloose – kick-off my Sunday shoes. Let’s keep traveling together.

Sunday Scripture

Greetings my friends. It is Sunday June 25TH 2023, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us celebrate this great new day of believing, following, trusting, loving, and being more like our Lord + Savior Jesus Christ. Let us love our neighbor as ourself.

I’ve got an excellent idea for a future sermon that I’m looking forward to researching, praying about, writing, and eventually preaching in multiple venues. It’ll be titled “Sebring & Weigle”, and it’ll explore two neighbors who founded, built, and grew a small South Central Florida town based on a firm foundation of Jesus Christ. Those neighbors are George Eugene Sebring Jr. and Charles Frederick Weigle. That town is my new hometown of Sebring Florida.

And now on #SundayScripture it’s the conclusion of the transcription of my sermon on “Paul & Titus” that I preached to my church family on March 05TH 2023. Here’s Part 9:

[CONCLUSION OF SERMON]

We were saved to do good. You know sometimes we think that we’re doing something good, but it’s not quite so. If we’re glorifying ourselves – then it’s not good. If we’re doing something so that people will see us doing it – then it’s not good. If we’re doing something so that we can tell others that we did it – then it’s not good. We must do good – for our neighbor – to glorify God. We must do good even when nobody is looking.

Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others – then they will not be unproductive. (Titus 3:14)

It’s a final exhortation. What’s an exhortation ?  It’s an urgent command from a church leader. The command is that we must do good by helping others.

Paul to the Romans:

When God’s people are in need – be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. (12:13)

Paul to the Ephesians:

Use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. (4:28b)

You know my sermon today is from Paul’s letter to Titus. I preached from that entire book of the Bible. It’s just 3 chapters and 46 verses. You can read it from start to finish in less than 5 minutes. But – you don’t have to read it that fast.

You know reading the Bible is addictive. Once you start reading it – you just want to keep on reading it. And the slower you read it – the more you’re going to learn – the more you’re going to retain – the more you’re going to comprehend – the more you’re going to get closer to God and His way. It’s the only way.

That’s my message for today. Thank You Lord for giving me the courage, the guidance, the direction, and the wisdom needed to bring forth Your Good News today. And Thank You church family for allowing me to share it with you.

[THE END]

If you wish to learn more about the God I know then stay tuned to #SundayScripture. The best is yet to come !

Thank you for reading my blog for this day, and may:

The LORD bless you, and keep you.
The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.
The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. AMEN.

Moore Haven Florida

Welcome back to #TravelThursday. There’s an interesting small town along my 185-mile retirement route between my new home and my old home. It’s located roughly two-thirds of the way driving northward to Sebring, and one-third of the way driving southward to Homestead.

Nestled along both banks of the Caloosahatchee Canal (connects its namesake river with Lake Okeechobee) – Moore Haven Florida is an historic small town of just 1 square mile in size and a little over 1,500 residents. It’s the county seat and only incorporated municipality of Glades County. Glades is one of the most rural and least-populous counties in the state of Florida with just over 12,000 residents.

The biggest and most notable landmark in Moore Haven is the Mamie Langdale Memorial Bridge – a modern 4-lane causeway built in 1999 that carries U.S. 27 traffic high atop the Caloosahatchee. Mamie Langdale (1903-1973) was a longtime bridge tender for the old 2-lane drawbridge that formerly crossed the canal.

After climbing the bridge from the south and reaching the top – the sight of the large U.S.A. flag down at the bottom in the center of town is so beautiful to see.

A couple of miles west of town lies the busy Love’s truck stop, gas station, convenience store, and (Arby’s) restaurant. I watched it being built along the north side of U.S. 27 back in 2016-2017 when I was already driving through the area a few times a year to and from my eventual retirement area. Once Love’s opened – I became a regular customer. Well – sort of. I only stopped there to use their spacious and clean bathroom. I felt a little bit guilty back then because that’s all I would do. I wouldn’t buy anything. Just passing through. But nowadays I almost always stop there – in both directions – to fill-up with gas, to use their bathrooms, and to also eat inside at the adjoining Arby’s. It’s my comfort stop, and the employees at the front counter at Love’s usually greet you upon entering and thank you upon exiting.

Next #TravelThursday it’s another milestone on my car’s odometer. Let’s keep traveling together.
