The Fortune Cookie Message Of The Week Club

It is now time for one of your favourite regular features here on ‘The Major’s Life Blog’, and that of course would be the continuing mini-series that is ‘The Fortune Cookie Message Of The Week Club’.

But first this is ‘Today’ on NBC.

Actually let me rant for a minute here about a pet-peeve of mine. I arrived at Panda Express at 11:07 AM. They are supposed to open at 11:00 AM. ‘Supposed’ is the key word here. I’ve forgiven the fact that during the Lunch hour they typically have an extremely limited selection as part of their a-la-carte menu. I’m sure that they have a much bigger selection of delicious food items available for consumption later on in the day. I just wish I knew what they tasted like. I can’t forgive the fact that when they (or any restaurant for that matter) are supposed to be open for business at a certain time they are actually not so. Doors locked. No notice. No nothing. I took my business elsewhere. It may be awhile before I visit them again for Lunch. My time is precious.

I instead proceeded to Homestead’s # 1 place for Chinese Food, Fun, Music, and Authentic Kitchen Arguments In Chinese. Yes – You guessed it – It’s the Peking House !

I enjoyed a MASSIVE selection of Lunch items – all-you-can-eat-‘boofay’-style. It was all good. I walked away very happy … and full !

Today’s fortune cookie message is as cool as two of my former house cats (Fluffy and Boots):

‘Your maintain a sense of balance in the midst of great success.’

It’s grammatically incorrect; however, it’s right on the mark. But it hasn’t always been that way for me. I’ve had great success in the past (and couldn’t handle it effectively), and I’ve had great failures as well (and didn’t know how to get out of it). With God as my Director I can now deal with both success and failure appropriately. I’m learning from both scenarios. It’s not effective to dwell on either. It’s beneficial to constantly look forward and move forward on this journey – never accepting the status quo or what’s average. It’s all about doing what’s good and right – striving for success and not allowing failure to but the brakes on progress.

Life Pointe Church Sunday Morning Tossed Salad

1.  Setup and Hospitality in the main lobby of the movie theatre went rather smooth this morning despite a few obstacles along the way. There were people missing from key positions and items missing from usual locations, but it all worked out in the end.

2.  I believe that we had from 20 to 25 new visitors to our church on this glorious Sunday morning for the two services combined. We even ran out of the new Life Pointe Church coffee mugs in-between the two services. Hopefully it will not be ‘one-and-out’ for our new visitors, and that they return next Sunday morning to claim their gifts and become regular attenders and eventually loyal and faithful members of our growing and loving church family.

3.  Pastor Paul was back in action after a week off up north, and it didn’t take long for the top of his face to glisten with sweat. His Information Booth was also back in action – minus the video on ‘the small screen’. (His laptop was ailing again.)

4.  Brother Jesse was also back in action, and back where he belongs – up on stage leading us in ‘Praise & Worship’ to kick-off each of the services. He was also proudly showing off one of his apparent Christmas presents from Chicagoland – a spiffy new sweater vest complete with a tie !

5.  Pastor Travis kicked-off a fresh new 5-week message series for 2008 and the new political year entitled ‘State Of The Church’. It’s all about what Jesus says about the Church and how we fit within it. Today’s theme – ‘A City On A Hill’. Hope is alive and well within our church !

Matthew 5:13-16 (New Living Translation – 2ND Edition):

Teaching About Salt And Light
13  You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor ?  Can you make it salty again ?  It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14  You are the light of the world — like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
15  No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.
16  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

The Major’s Walk-A-Thon

Sky: Mostly Cloudy With Peeks Of Sun
Temperature: 61°F
Relative Humidity: 94%
Winds: NW 9 MPH
Barometric Pressure: 30.33 STEADY

My thoughts:

1.  The ground was wet when I stepped outside this morning for my 1.3-mile walk around the perimeter of my neighbourhood. It was also chilly out there when the sun wasn’t out. (Wind chills were still in the 50s.) When the sun peeked through the clouds it felt a little more comfortable. I appreciate the South Florida sun !

2.  My neighbours have trickled back from vacation. There were more cars in the various parking lots this morning than on any other morning since I began this walk-a-thon on Christmas Eve.

3.  Dogs simply don’t like me. One little mean growling dog would have run up to me and bitten my legs if it weren’t for his / her owner holding on tightly to his / her leash. Two other little dogs that were actually loose saw me, and then ran back hurriedly to their owner. That same other little dog from last Saturday that was barking loudly and tapping violently on the front window of his / her home as I walked by was at it again !

4.  Virtually every single utility poll along the southern perimeter fence of my neighbourhood (and SW 336TH Street) is tilted towards my neighbourhood at a precarious angle instead of straight-up. It’s probably been like that since Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. I wonder how secure those poles are embedded into the ground ?

5.  Walking is a great time for praying. I prayed for the residents of Homestead, Florida City, Redland, Leisure City, Naranja Lakes, and Princeton to be blessed by the Glory of God. I prayed that the believers stay strong and unwavering with their personal relationship with Jesus. I prayed that the non-believers be guided onto the on-ramp of the fantastic journey by the believers. There’s plenty of room for everyone who truly believes in Him !

My NFL Weekend Game Picks

LAST WEEKEND I went 13-3 (.813) with my picks. I’m that good !

Here’s who I’m picking to win THIS WEEKEND (in bold green):

Saturday, 4:30 PM EST, NBC
Redskins At Seahawks
My beloved Redskins are the hottest team in the NFC !  If I’m picking them to win the Super Bowl then why would I stray here ?

Saturday, 8:00 PM EST, NBC
Jaguars At Steelers
Forget geography. The Jaguars are a cold-weather team. They are the new Steelers.

Sunday, 1:00 PM EST, FOX
Giants At Buccaneers
This could go either way. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants win this one. It’ll be close.

Sunday, 4:30 PM EST, CBS
Titans At Chargers
Watch the Chargers light-up the scoreboard in a blowout !
