My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday February 25TH 1990:

  5. “Just Between You And Me” – Lou Gramm

Don Henley’s “The End Of The Innocence” hit # 1 on my chart 30 years ago this past week. Not bad for a single that was actually released nearly 9 months earlier in June 1989. It was a late-bloomer on South Florida Top 40 radio at the time – not really making much of an impact until after it was nominated for 3 Grammy awards including Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. (It won for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.)

“The End Of The Innocence” was the title-track of Don Henley’s biggest album ever (nominated for Album Of The Year), and that album was by far my most-listened to album (cassette) on the sands of Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. It essentially became the soundtrack of the war for me. Not bad for an album that was pretty much anti-war. The title-track actually returned to # 1 on my chart dated Sunday March 10TH 1991 – my first Sunday back home stateside post-war. I consider it to be one of the greatest songs ever made from one of the greatest albums ever made during my lifetime.

Well after 13 weeks in a row of blogging – 55 posts in a row on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, Mondays, and 3 Tuesdays – I’m ready for a break – Spring Break that is !

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 28TH 1990:

1990 was a great year for Top 40 music on the radio. It was the start of the greatest decade of pop music of my lifetime; although, I’ve always considered 1989 to be the theoretical start of 1990s music.

My iTunes library contains almost 300 hits from the 1990s (and another 30+ from 1989) – more than any other decade by far. I listen to ’90s music at my desk at work all day every day (amongst hits from other decades).

I can’t believe that 1990 was 30 years ago !  It was quite the momentous year for me. The Summer Of 1990 will be remembered as the Summer Of Rock & Roll on Panama City Beach Florida. It was a wonderful summer (at the time) – that will never happen again. It was fun for a season. 20½ years later – a few days before Christmas of 2010 – I went back to the scene of the crime – more mature, more educated, and saved by the Grace of God – to literally repent for what happened back then in 1990.

So every 4TH Friday of the month this year I’ll take you back to my 1990 – and the soundtrack of my life back then as a 22 and 23-year-old active duty military guy.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1999

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday December 19TH 1999:

  1. “Falls Apart” – Sugar Ray
  2. “My Love Is Your Love” – Whitney Houston
  3. “Shake Your Bon-Bon” – Ricky Martin
  4. “Then The Morning Comes” – Smash Mouth
  5. “Steal My Sunshine” – Len

It’s my 2ND-to-last hit music chart of the 1990s and the 20TH Century. A couple of songs on there – “My Love Is Your Love” (Jonathan Peters’ Radio Mix) and “Steal My Sunshine” – are still favorites of mine exactly 20 years later. The others – well they kind of failed the test of time.

The 1990s were by far my favorite overall decade of hit music – particularly the HI-NRG Eurodance era during the middle part of the decade. (Think 2 Unlimited, AB Logic, Amber, Culture Beat, Fun Factory, La Bouche, Le Click, Real McCoy, Snap!)

Ironically my chart was on a 3-year hiatus during the peak of this era, and it inspired me to resurrect my chart at the end of October 1995. (It would go on for a 14-year run.)

Once we entered the late-1990s HI-NRG Eurodance began fading, and Top 40 radio began to go boy band pop crazy. (Think Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and 98°.)

So a month from now on the 3RD Friday of the month 20 years ago will be January 2000. We’ll kickoff the 21ST Century then with a Top 5 chart that looks very similar to the one above. But speaking of HI-NRG Eurodance there’s a stray track on that chart that hinted that perhaps HI-NRG Eurodance would make a comeback in the new millennium.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2009

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 10, 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so I go back 10 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday December 06TH 2009:

  3. “City On Our Knees” – TobyMac
  4. “Breathing For Me” – Everyday Sunday
  5. “Broken Man” – Horizons Fall

Check that out – an early TobyMac song on my chart – and a really good one too. That was actually Toby’s 3RD hit on my chart – following the # 1 smash “Made To Love” and “Boomin'”. I had my research department (me) go even further back in time to November of 1996. That’s when TobyMac really charted for the first time – along with Michael Tait and Kevin Max. Together they were dc Talk, and they scored with a Christian # 1 smash that crossed-over onto Secular Top 40 and Adult Contemporary radio stations – “(Just) Between You And Me”. It spent a single week on my chart at # 28.
