My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday April 22ND 1990:

“Get Up ! (Before The Night Is Over)” – Technotronic Ft. Ya Kid K
“Dangerous” – Roxette
“Roam” – The B-52s
“Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” – Jane Child
“This Old Heart Of Mine” – Rod Stewart & Ronald Isley

What a jam that was 30 years ago – and it still is today. Imagine a young almost 23-year-old version of me dancing to that jam at the hottest clubs of South Florida in 1990. It’s still in heavy rotation on my iPod Shuffles. I can’t keep still in my chair when I hear it at almost 53 years old. It’s aged quite well over the past 30 years. (It’s aged better than me.)

The Eurodance era of the 1990s was my favorite era of music (by far) prior to salvation in Christ. Many credit “Gonna Make You Sweat” from C + C Music Factory in kickstarting the nearly decade-long pop radio era in 1991, but Technotronic was getting the world to dance with hip hop treats and house beats some two years earlier. They stormed the world with two back-to-back mammoth hits – starting with “Pump Up The Jam” in 1989 and continuing with “Get Up ! …” in 1990.

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday March 25TH 1990:

“I’ll Be Your Everything” – Tommy Page Ft. New Kids On The Block
“The Price Of Love” – Bad English
“Sometimes She Cries” – Warrant
“Roam” – The B-52s
“Dangerous” – Roxette

30 years ago this week Tommy Page was high atop my secular pop chart at the time with his song that he cowrote with Jordan Knight and Danny Wood of New Kids On The Block. Jordan actually wanted it as a solo single for himself, but after working on the song for awhile Tommy fell in love with it and asked if he could record it for his own solo project. Jordan agreed, and he even helped produce the song along with Donnie Wahlberg. The result was an instant “out-of-the-box” smash that blew-up the all-request lines at U.S. Top 40 radio stations nationwide. It hit # 1 in its 5TH week on my own Top 40 chart at the time, and 3 weeks later it was # 1 from coast-to-coast on the Billboard Hot 100.

I wish they still made pure pop songs like that.

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday February 25TH 1990:

“The End Of The Innocence” – Don Henley
“Roam” – The B-52s
“I Go To Extremes” – Billy Joel
“Dangerous” – Roxette
“Just Between You And Me” – Lou Gramm

Don Henley’s “The End Of The Innocence” hit # 1 on my chart 30 years ago this past week. Not bad for a single that was actually released nearly 9 months earlier in June 1989. It was a late-bloomer on South Florida Top 40 radio at the time – not really making much of an impact until after it was nominated for 3 Grammy awards including Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. (It won for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.)

Don_Henley_-_The_End_of_the_Innocence

“The End Of The Innocence” was the title-track of Don Henley’s biggest album ever (nominated for Album Of The Year), and that album was by far my most-listened to album (cassette) on the sands of Saudi Arabia during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. It essentially became the soundtrack of the war for me. Not bad for an album that was pretty much anti-war. The title-track actually returned to # 1 on my chart dated Sunday March 10TH 1991 – my first Sunday back home stateside post-war. I consider it to be one of the greatest songs ever made from one of the greatest albums ever made during my lifetime.

Well after 13 weeks in a row of blogging – 55 posts in a row on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, Mondays, and 3 Tuesdays – I’m ready for a break – Spring Break that is !

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday January 28TH 1990:

“Dangerous” – Roxette
“Leave A Light On” – Belinda Carlisle
“It’s Not Enough” – Starship
“Janie’s Got A Gun” – Aerosmith
“Roam” – The B-52s

1990 was a great year for Top 40 music on the radio. It was the start of the greatest decade of pop music of my lifetime; although, I’ve always considered 1989 to be the theoretical start of 1990s music.

My iTunes library contains almost 300 hits from the 1990s (and another 30+ from 1989) – more than any other decade by far. I listen to ’90s music at my desk at work all day every day (amongst hits from other decades).

I can’t believe that 1990 was 30 years ago ! It was quite the momentous year for me. The Summer Of 1990 will be remembered as the Summer Of Rock & Roll on Panama City Beach Florida. It was a wonderful summer (at the time) – that will never happen again. It was fun for a season. 20½ years later – a few days before Christmas of 2010 – I went back to the scene of the crime – more mature, more educated, and saved by the Grace of God – to literally repent for what happened back then in 1990.

So every 4TH Friday of the month this year I’ll take you back to my 1990 – and the soundtrack of my life back then as a 22 and 23-year-old active duty military guy.
