SUMMER OF 2023 – We are in our 11TH weekend (out of 15) of the Summer Of 2023 – starting with U.S. Memorial Day Weekend and ending with U.S. Labor Day Weekend. With only 4 more weekends to go I’m already prepping for my traditional End-Of-Summer #CountUp of my Top 10 hits of the season. 2 of the hottest songs of the summer (currently descending from the top of the chart) are “Fingerprints” and “This Is Our God”. It’s 2 tracks (among many) that me and my fellow believers and followers of Jesus Christ were singing and dancing to as we praised and worshiped Him.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again with the new weekend – and 3 new entries – known as #TravelThursday, #SundayScripture, and #MusicMonday.

Sunday Scripture

Greetings my friends. It is Sunday August 06TH 2023, and this is the day that our LORD has made. Let us rejoice. Let us be glad in it. Let us celebrate this great new day of believing, following, trusting, loving, and being more like our Lord + Savior Jesus Christ. Let us love our neighbor as ourself.

I observe and celebrate a bunch of personal life-changing anniversaries during the month of August. But definitely – the most life-changing event of them all – occurred around the 20TH of August of 2006 when my salvation in Jesus Christ began. If it weren’t for that miracle from Heaven – I wouldn’t be here today, and you wouldn’t be reading this blog today. I probably wouldn’t be alive today. That’s right. For 17 years I’ve believed and followed a living and loving God who guides and directs me with each new day.

This morning I’m leading my church family in Communion. It was 7 years ago this weekend that I did so for the very first time for my current church family. For this morning’s Communion I’ll be explaining to my brothers and sisters why we observe and celebrate Communion at the start of every month.

And now here on #SundayScripture it’s the continuation of the refresh, renew, and reboot of my sermon on “Pray & Believe” – originally preached on Sunday June 16TH 2019. Here’s Part 3:

[CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK]

You know when I was a young’un on this journey I thought of praying as being very intimidating. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know how to say it. But then when I was asked to pray, and I improvised, and I did it, and I kept on doing it – it became less intimidating.

You know which # 1 best-selling “how-to” book I used to teach me how to pray ? The Bible. God’s Word teaches us how to pray.

The Bible says “keep on praying.” That’s a short 3-word verse in First Thessalonians Chapter 5. That’s actually the New Living Translation First Edition. That verse was updated for the Second Edition from “keep on praying” to “never stop praying”. Now it doesn’t mean to pray with every single breath and every waking moment. It means don’t give up when troubles come your way. Pray.

I learned this verse early on as a baby Christian. It helped me a lot:

Don’t worry about anything. Instead – pray about (what’s that next word ?) everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. (Philippians 4:6)

I’ve heard it said that worry is a conversation you have with yourself about things you can’t change. But prayer is a conversation you have with God about things He can change.

When I pray – almost every sentence has the words “Thank You” in it. I thank God for the current situation. I thank the Lord for what He’s already done. I thank Him for what He’s going to do.

I like Romans 12:12 – Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and (do what ?) keep on praying.

You see when we rejoice in our confident hope – when we trust in Christ – we can be patient in times of trouble. Praying to God shows God that we truly trust in Him. Praying to God from the valleys confirms to Him that we believe that He is in control, and that He is right there with us – leading us out of the valley.

Let’s Go To The Mall !

Welcome back to #TravelThursday. There’s no denying that America’s love affair with traditional interior shopping malls is over. We first discovered and got excited about them back in the 1960s, as strip shopping centers were enclosed and expanded. Newly-constructed malls dotted the American landscape during its heyday in the 1970s. You could spend hours or even all day at the mall – protected from the elements outside – whether it be summertime heat or wintertime cold or wind or rain or snow. It was the hip social place to be for all ages during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Many of us “grew up” inside malls – at our favorite stores and restaurants. Parking spaces were especially hard to find from the day after Thanksgiving through the New Year. Remember when helicopters hovered above mall parking lots during the holiday season to report on traffic going in and coming out ?

But then – what goes up – must come down. The slow demise of the shopping mall began shortly after the turn of the 21ST century as we dialed-in and connected to the Interwebs to buy things. (Some would even say that it really started its decline during the late-1990s with the rise of Walmart and Target and Best Buy and other “big box” stores.)

Nowadays what used to be shopping malls are now open-air shopping centers – or vacant plots of land where the mall once stood – or still a mall with few signs of life. Of course there are some areas around the country where shopping malls are not just still alive – but also thriving. (South Florida is one of those areas.)

There are web sites and social media pages that are dedicated to dead malls. They are full of photos from yesteryear when they once thrived – as well as what they look like today – if they even exist today.

Here in my new hometown of Sebring Florida – just 4 miles from my neighborhood – we have the only traditional shopping mall in the county – Lakeshore Mall – and it’s a dead mall. It’s still there. It’s been there since early-1992 (built in 1991). I imagine that it was a booming mall during its first decade of existence. (There are several thousand parking spaces surrounding the mall.) Nowadays – it’s quite the opposite. More than half of the mall (more like three-quarters of it) is vacant. The only movie theatre in the county is inside, and it seems to be doing fine. To bring in customers the mall hosts various flea markets and special community events, and even BINGO once a month in the former food court. They actually do a pretty good job promoting these events on their Facebook page.

As long as the air conditioning is working (which is suspect) it’s actually a nice place to get in out of the summertime heat of South Central Florida, but you’re not going to spend a lot of time there unless you’re seeing a movie or walking laps around the mall. I should add that there is a 24-hour (during the week) Planet Fitness inside the mall.

I’m rooting for the survival of our mall. It needs a really popular anchor store to bring in the residents. I’m not sure what that store could be.

Footnote: One of the main entrances to the mall from busy U.S. 27 is actually blocked. Why ? The big sign for the mall is leaning and about to come crashing down !

RETRO – You know I kind of miss compiling and presenting #RetroFriday here on my blog. It’s been 3 months since “My Top 5 Hits RETRO” ended after over 5 years. That was a natural continuation of the “Saturday Night Retro” era of my blog from the 1990s and 2000s. This past Friday I would’ve looked back at 35 years ago at the end of July 1988. That’s when Rod Stewart was at # 1 on my chart with “Lost In You”. That was a good song !

JOSH WILSON – But let’s look back at 5 years ago this weekend. That’s when Josh Wilson hit # 1 on my chart with his cool-sounding “Dream Small” song. It had a weird title for a positive and encouraging Christian song, but the song was uplifting, and so were its lyrics. I never hear it on the radio these days, but I can still sing along to it when I play it on YouTube.
