Thursday Night Internet Hoax Hall-Of-Shame

Flesh-eating bananas ?

Bananas

If you receive an E-Mail stating that killer bananas from Costa Rica have been infected by flesh-eating bacteria and have decimated the local monkey population and are now on their way to the U.S. and could be at your local grocery store tomorrow – then don’t believe it. It’s not true. It’s all made up.

There are at least two (and probably more) variants of this particular E-Mail floating around in cyberspace. The Costa Rica banana scare (hoax) actually began way back at the start of 2000. Read all about it. Check out this timeline of ‘The Great Internet Banana Scare Of 2000’.

The Internet is the gift that just keeps on giving. Television has its endless reruns, and so does the Internet. What was a hoax way back in 2000 is still a hoax here in 2008. Bored people like to bring these hoaxes back from the dead, revive them, and pollute our bandwidth with them. They may look new to you (particularly if you’ve never seen them before), but common sense rules here. If it doesn’t sound true then it probably isn’t true, so don’t forward such diatribe. Hit that {DELETE} key !

The Major’s Walk-A-Thon

Sky: Overcast, Windy, Drizzly
Temperature: 68°F
Relative Humidity: 92%
Winds: NW 8 MPH
Barometric Pressure: 30.03 Rising

My thoughts:

1.  At 7 AM this morning it was raining outside (just as I forecasted last night), so in lieu of walking I decided to go eating – at the Cracker Barrel. I enjoyed a MASSIVE breakfast consisting of 4 slices of french toast drowning in maple syrup, 2 scrambled eggs, 2 smoked sausages, hot coffee, and cold water. Now where did I put my Lipitor ?

2.  I got back home at 8 AM, and the rain had ended. I decided to walk the walk. It was the most unusual ‘Walk-A-Thon’ yet.

3.  My semi-basic 1.4-mile walk on a rare full stomach was done so during treacherous weather conditions – with thick dark clouds hanging low overhead, strong gusty northwesterly winds of up to 25 MPH, cold air pouring in, and even a little bit of leftover drizzle on this fresh side of the powerful cold front. I will dream of mornings like this from April through October when it’s hot and sticky outside with no wind.

4.  The ducks were out and about this morning, and they appeared to be lost, dazed, confused, and perhaps even drunk. They were stumbling about, wandering around with no sense of direction, and I saw one of them nearly tumble over in a state of mass chaos. They were wondering why the weather had suddenly changed on them. Some of them probably drank too much (rain).

5.  If my friends and acquaintances from my previous life (not capitalized) saw what I was doing today – walking, talking, laughing, and loving Life (capitalized) then they would think that I am not that same person that I was in my teens, 20s, and 30s. That plastic mannequin withered and rotted away. He died. I was reborn during the Summer Of 2006. I have a whole bunch of new friends now that are walking with me as we follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These are my 40s, and everything I do I do it for God. AMEN !

The Major’s Walk-A-Thon

Sky: Mostly Sunny
Temperature: 62°F
Relative Humidity: 89%
Winds: N 5 MPH
Barometric Pressure: 30.27 Rising

My thoughts:

1.  It was another 1.8-mile walk around my neighbourhood on this cool and crisp Saturday morning. I did it in a little over 35 minutes.

2.  Nobody was outside this morning walking or jogging or walking their dog(s). I was all alone – just me, the continuous hits playing on my iPod Shuffle, and the coolest music video I’ve ever seen – the imagery and scenery all around me. This neighbourhood is beautiful. I wish I discovered it 13 years ago when I first moved here. I wasn’t living back then. Now I am alive !

3.  Constitution, Independence, Liberty, Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Franklin, and Hamilton: These are the names of the 8 streets within my neighbourhood. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin were the authors of the United States Declaration Of Independence. It was created on July 04TH 1776. The United States Constitution was created in 1787 and then ratified in 1788.

4.  During my Active Duty Air Force years I had to run a mile-and-a-half once a year within a specified period of time. I always beat the time, but I never enjoyed it. Some 20 years later I walk that same distance once a week, and I love it. I actually look forward to Saturday mornings because of the walk. It’s a physical walk that symbolizes my spiritual walk with my loving friends and family as we follow the ultimate Leader – The King Of Kings.

5.  2007 was the year that everything changed for me in my Life. I’m not re-living 2007 again. I’m making 2008 even better. It’s one thing to wake up from the darkness of night (1967-2006). It’s another thing to chase that daylight and make an impact in my Life. That’s what I’m all about for 2008. I’m ready to take the stand and be ‘Fully Engaged’.

Bedtime Stories

You know that Spring is almost here when Major League Baseball is already playing exhibition games. Our Florida Marlins played two games today as they literally split-up into two teams. One team beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 and the other team lost to the Baltimore Orioles 7-5. Yesterday the Marlins thrashed the Orioles 16-3, and the day before that they tied the Nationals 3-3.

The National Weather Service in Miami announced today that the three Winter months of December, January, and February were the warmest Winter season in 76 years – and the second warmest on record. That statistic applies only to Miami International Airport. It does not necessarily apply to Homestead because as we know our weather here can be very different than what is going on at the airport some 30 miles away. Case-in-point here in Homestead we bottomed out at 45°F and 51°F over the past two mornings. At MIA – 50°F and 56°F respectively. We were 5°F colder on both mornings.

Well those are your ‘Bedtime Stories’ for this Friday night. I’m currently watching “Amnesia” on NBC. I’ve got another long walk around my neighbourhood planned for tomorrow morning, so be sure to catch ‘The Major’s Walk-A-Thon’ here on this blog shortly thereafter.

Until then remember this:

Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.
