Honoring My Fellow Veterans

It’s Veterans Day here in the U.S.A.

This week marks the 36TH anniversary that the United States Air Force shipped me off to a foreign country solo for the first time in my life. As an 18½-year-old I flew from Washington Dulles Airport nonstop to London Heathrow Airport. It was an overnight flight from November 09TH into November 10TH of 1985. From there I took British Rail westward to Swindon in Wiltshire, and then from there I hired a cab to take me up to RAF Fairford in the Cotswolds of Gloucestershire – my home for the next 2 years. (It was my first permanent duty station.)

I remember “Road To Nowhere” from The Talking Heads playing on my cab driver’s radio, and I certainly felt like I was on a road to nowhere, but I was really on a road to somewhere – the official start of my lifelong career.

I’ve been a member of the United States Air Force for the past 37 years now – going back to when I first signed on the dotted line of the delayed enlistment program near the start of my senior year in high school. I was hesitant in joining the military way back then, but it all turned out just right, and it’s become my career. I’d do it all over again.

To my fellow Veterans – this is our day. From one Veteran to all of you – I thank you for serving your nation so that we may be free indeed.

NO NEW ENTRIES – After a whopping 4 new entries last week my chart takes a breather this week. But a couple of last week’s new entries make nice moves upward this week. MercyMe’s 6TH hit is now their 6TH Top 2 hit, as “On Our Way” ekes up a notch. Crowder follows-up his # 1 smash “God God Almighty” with his now Top 5 hit “In The House”.

You know I love a song that speaks of being born again:

♫ Bet you’ll wanna sing hallelujah. Bet you’ll say an amen.
Can’t help but celebrate being born again.
Somebody who loves you is waiting at the door.
It’s home sweet home here in the house of the Lord. ♫

This is the season finale of #Top10Monday. It will return in 4 weeks on Monday December 06TH 2021. My chart continues on offline, and I’ll soon compile my 250TH chart of this current era. To celebrate 250 weeks of positive and encouraging hits I’ll #CountUp my Top 25 hits of 250 weeks on a very special blog post and chart on Wednesday December 01ST 2021.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2006

Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 25, 30, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 1ST Friday of the month, so I go back 15 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday November 05TH 2006:

  1. “Gravity” – The Fold
  2. “Activate” – Stellar Kart
  3. “Up Above” – High Flight Society
  4. “In Such A State” – Edison Glass
  5. “Waste Of Time” – FM Static

11 weeks into my salvation – before I even found and joined a church family – I was rockin’ to God and His music via my local independent Christian rock radio station – “The Call”.

Hearing these songs 15 years later gives me goosebumps. It brings me back to that euphoric time when I was a baby again – at the age of 39.

My # 1 smash 15 years ago was from The Fold – a band that is still around today after nearly 20 years. In 2006 they released their debut album – “This Too Shall Pass”. Its opening track was “Gravity”. It was their 1ST of 5 hits on my chart over the next 3 years.

I like the chorus of “Gravity”:

♫ Just like gravity – what draws You to me
Someone I didn’t know I needed
It’s like gravity – it’s stronger than me
I need You here ♫

Next Friday on RETRO I’ll go back 25 years ago to November 1996.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !
