My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1997

Hello again retro music fans. Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, 25, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 3RD Friday of the month, so I go back 25 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday December 21ST 1997:

  1. “Tubthumping” – Chumbawamba
  2. “Legend Of A Cowgirl” – Imani Coppola
  3. “Mo Money Mo Problems” – Notorious B.I.G. Ft. Puff Daddy & Mase
  4. “Walkin’ On The Sun” – Smash Mouth
  5. “(I Just Wanna) Fly” – Sugar Ray Ft. Super Cat

19-year-old New York City native Imani Coppola hit # 2 on my chart in December 1997 for 3 weeks in a row. She was held from the top spot by Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping”. It spent 26 weeks in a row on my chart. It finished 1997 as my # 21 hit of the year (out of 161). It also finished 1998 as my # 41 hit of the year (out of 188).

“Legend Of A Cowgirl” remains a favorite of mine 25 years later. In fact it’s currently in heavy rotation on my iPod Shuffles that play at my desk at my workplace. Here’s its award-nominated official music video:

Next #RetroFriday (in 2 weeks) I’ll go back 35 years ago to the end of December 1987. It’s when a 17-year-old teen from Long Island New York arrived “Out Of The Blue” to encourage you to “Shake Your Love”.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going retro with me !

CHRISTMAS # 1 – I think I found my Christmas chart-topper for this year. Newcomer Ben Fuller reaches the top as he sings to God about who he is. He’s a child of the most-high God, and the most-high God’s for him. I love this song. I love Ben’s powerful voice. I love Ben’s passion in singing his song to God. I love the words that he uses.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again with the new weekend – and 4 new entries – known as #TravelThursday, #RetroFriday#SundayScripture, and #Top10Monday.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 2002

Hello again retro music fans. Every Friday I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, 25, or 35 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 2ND Friday of the month, so I go back 20 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday December 08TH 2002:

And here’s an actual snapshot of my Top 5 exactly the way it appeared on my web site at the time:

That’s from the 738TH overall edition and 379TH online edition of my weekly hit music chart – known at the time as my “Pure Dance Chart”. It was right in the middle of the 2ND era of my chart that lasted a little over 14 years from October 1995 to January 2010. For a little over 2 years from 2002 to 2004 I was immersed in the #EDM culture, and my chart reflected that short era of my life.

It was an all-female-led Top 5 – with Shaft leading the pack at # 1. Shaft were actually two English producers who did a bunch of covers and remixes right around the turn of the 21ST century. Donna Canale ultimately sang the vocals of their cover of “Sway” – retitled as “(Mucho Mambo) Sway” – but their original version included Rosemary Clooney’s vocals from her 1959 cover of the song. That version had to be pulled from the market due to a copyright dispute. Dean Martin scored a pop hit with his 1954 cover of the song.

Shaft’s 2ND version of the song was a Top 10 pop smash in Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and New Zealand. A HI-NRG dance remix of the track was my # 1 smash for 2 weeks 20 years ago. It was a huge hit on the radio here in Miami.

Next #RetroFriday I’ll go back 25 years ago to December 1997. It’s when a 19-year-old New York City native hit # 2 with her debut smash that’s legendary.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going retro with me !

My Top 10 Hits – Week 303

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from the previous week. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back nearly 45 years. Here’s this week’s chart – for the week ending Sunday December 04TH 2022 – the 303RD week of this current era that began on Presidents’ Day Weekend of 2017:

TW LW WKS SONG TITLE ARTIST / SITE
1 1 10 Ain’t Nobody
[4TH week @ # 1]
Cody Carnes
2 2 7 Who I Am Ben Fuller
3 6 10 Love Me Like I Am for King & Country Ft. Jordin Sparks
4 5 7 Then Christ Came MercyMe
5 7 13 Miracle Power We The Kingdom
6 3 17 Good Morning Mercy Jason Crabb
7 4 16 New Creation Mac Powell
8 9 3 There Is Freedom Josh Baldwin
9 1 Heart Of God Zach Williams
10 1 I See Grace Micah Tyler

# 1 This Week In:
2021 – “On Our Way” – MercyMe Ft. Sam Wesley
2020 – “Every Step Of The Way” – Cade Thompson
2019 – “Dead Man Walking” – Jeremy Camp
2018 – “Even Then” – Micah Tyler
2017 – “Control (Somehow You Want Me)” – Tenth Avenue North

CODY – Mr. Carnes is still at # 1 on my chart for the 4TH week in a row. “Ain’t Nobody” is my 14TH # 1 smash of 2022, and it’s my 7TH # 1 smash of 2022 to spend at least 4 weeks at the top. It’s also clinched a spot on “My Top 22 Of 2022” chart which I’ll present in just 4 weeks.

BEN – Mr. Fuller is still at # 2 for the 4TH week in a row. His former # 1 smash nationwide on U.S. Christian radio is a favorite of mine that I just don’t get to hear often enough, but when I do hear it – I listen intently and sing along to it. ♫ It’s who I am. I’m a child of the most-high God, and the most-high God’s for me. ♫

CADE – 2 years ago this week Mr. Thompson ascended to # 1 with his breakthrough smash “Every Step Of The Way”. It was his first of 12 weeks in a row at the top of my chart, and it’s actually the # 2 hit overall over the past 303 weeks. Here’s the official lyric video of this awesome positive pop jam.

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again with the new weekend – and 4 new entries – known as #TravelThursday, #RetroFriday#SundayScripture, and #Top10Monday.
