Tuesday Night Grab Bag O’ Thoughts

1.  Category 1 Hurricane Gustav made landfall earlier this afternoon in southwestern Haiti very near that country’s capitol city. I am forecasting it to eventually intensify into an extremely dangerous Category 4 Hurricane threatening the U.S. Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida on Labor Day Monday and Tuesday. If you live anywhere between New Orleans and Panama City Beach then I would start preparing now. Don’t panic. Prepare.

2.  I ate a MASSIVE Lunch at this place late this morning. As usual it was a ton of great food – hot and plentiful – with excellent customer service. If you don’t know the Beef’s then you just don’t know what’s good for Lunch !

3.  I’ll be driving well over 800 miles from this Thursday morning through this Sunday afternoon. That’s the most driving that I’ll be doing in nearly 18 months – since March 2007 when I drove to and from north of Atlanta Georgia !  Back then I was paying between $2.40 and $2.70 per gallon of gas.

4.  I’m constantly watching cable television on my sparkling new desktop computer system. My favourite part of it all – pausing LIVE TV and then resuming it when I feel like it. I now know this – A 30-minute TV show recorded on my hard drive takes up 1.87 GB of space. That’s nearly one-fourth of one percent (0.25%) of my entire hard drive !

5.  I didn’t watch the Olympics at all. I got caught up on previously-recorded television shows on VHS and DVD. In addition to my 3 VHS VCRs (‘Andrew’, ‘Barney’, and ‘Charley’) I also have my DVD recorder (‘Danny’) as well as my new HP computer (‘Eddie’). I know. I’m weird. Who isn’t ?

Monday Night Countdown

My friends – I used to party. I used to hang out with the happenin’ scene. That was then and this is now.

Here are my personal TOP 5 smash hits on the radio and at the clubs that I was partying to exactly 20 years ago this weekend as a nutty 21-year-old USAF Senior Airman – for the week ending Sunday August 28TH 1988:

5.  It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man – Rick Astley

4.  Monkey – George Michael

3.  Staying Together – Debbie Gibson

2.  What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy) – The Information Society

1.  Baby I Love Your Way / Freebird (Medley) – Will To Power

Life Pointe Church Sunday Morning Tossed Salad

1.  The summertime slump is done and over with. We had one of our biggest crowds in a couple of months during both services. It was so great to see that movie theatre all packed up with Life Pointe Church energy and enthusiasm for about 4 hours this morning. One couple saw all of the cars out in the parking lot as they drove by, so they decided to see what blockbuster box office smash was showing at 11 AM. I greeted them and then told them that the movies didn’t start until 1:30 this afternoon. They asked what ‘all of this’ was (pointing to all of the action in the main lobby). I told them that ‘this’ is Life Pointe Church. They blew me off and walked away.

2.  Far more relevant than any movie that Hollywood could ever come up with is one of our Sunday morning services. Pastor Travis has returned for the first time since July, and he kicked-off a fresh new message series entitled ‘Loaded’. What does the Bible say about money ?  In this three-week message series we’ll be sharing a strong Biblical perspective on money, material possessions, and eternity. We’ll be using the Scriptures to approach these somewhat controversial topics head-on. We’ll be challenged to rethink our core attitudes and use our God-given resources in ways that will have an eternal impact. We’ll deal straightforwardly with issues of materialism, stewardship, prosperity theology, and debt.

3.  I won’t be at Life Pointe Church next Sunday morning, so you’ll have to check out one of our other fine bloggers next Sunday afternoon for a good solid ‘Wrap-Up’ of the events of the morning. Might I suggest this old cat or this young pup or even our fine leader – now with yellow hair !  I know I’ll be looking forward to these blogs next week to see what I missed.

The ‘Life Pointe Church Sunday Morning Tossed Salad’ returns in two weeks !
