My Top 5 Movies – 2019

Last year I managed to see 20 movies at various theatres in Florida and Texas. That’s the least amount of movies seen at the theatres in a full decade – since 2010. It’s way down from the average of 36 movies seen per year between 2012 and 2017. (That includes a record high of 43 in 2015.) The steep downward trend (of the past two years) can be attributed to a lack of quality product that interests me, and the fact that I’ve been busier at work and busier at home when I’m not at work.

Out of the 20 movies seen in 2019 I rated 14 of them as a perfect 4.0 stars. I rated 5 movies as 3.5 stars (the equivalent of a “B” letter grade). 1 movie got only 3.0 stars – “Long Shot“. It was rated as my worst movie of the year.

So how about my Top 5 movies of 2019:

  1. “A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood“
  2. “Richard Jewell“
  3. “Ben Is Back”
  4. “Breakthrough“
  5. “Yesterday“

Just below my Top 5 – a couple of honorable mentions – “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” and “Knives Out“.

Here’s hoping that 2020 is a better year at the movies for my personal tastes. I actually enjoy sitting in a movie theatre and watching a movie including all of the commercials and previews before the movie – despite the annoying things that other moviegoers do.

Weekend Kickoff Mini-Thoughts

Let’s try this again – a rapid-fire session of thoughts on my mind right this minute:

  • It’s been awhile since I last did this.
  • In fact it’s been since Thursday August 01ST 2019.
  • I’m not sure that some of you “get this” feature.
  • If you’ve been following my blogs for the past 12 years then you “get this”.
  • For those that don’t “get this” no worries – just follow along.
  • Last night was our last sunset at 7 PM or after here until next March.
  • It’s getting darker earlier, and I like that.
  • In a little over 3 weeks we return to Standard Time.
  • I prefer Standard Time over Daylight Saving Time.
  • I wish we stayed on Standard Time all year long.
  • Most people don’t know what Daylight Saving Time is.
  • Pretty soon we’ll start getting cooler here in South Florida.
  • By “cooler” I mean the 60s in the morning instead of the 70s.
  • We’re still a good month away from feeling some 50s.
  • Our 5-month rainy season is almost over.
  • It’s been a below average rainy season.
  • I enjoy our 7-month dry season from October to May.
  • I hope to begin my dry season weekend fitness walks soon.
  • I hope to do much better than I did last dry season.
  • It’s Columbus Day Weekend here in the U.S.
  • I adore 3-day holiday weekends.
  • Maybe I’ll go for a walk in the park this Saturday morning.
  • I mostly plan to continue writing my next sermon this weekend.
  • It’s on God’s “Kindness & Love”.
  • I have another sermon that I’m working on titled “Ways & Memes”.
  • I’ll be stepping completely out of my comfort zone for that one.
  • There’s a few movies that I hope to see on HBO On Demand this weekend.
  • One of them is that World War 1 movie, “They Shall Not Grow Old”.
  • I’m really looking forward to a quiet and productive weekend at home.
  • Tomorrow on the blog my RETRO series continues with 15 years ago.
  • My new blog posts go LIVE at 3 AM U.S. East Coast time aside from Sunday.
  • I blog 4 times per weekend on Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.
  • I don’t blog on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
  • If I were to add a 5TH day of blogging then I’d add Tuesdays.
  • But I have no plans to do that anytime soon.
  • Programming Alert:  The 50TH GMA Dove Awards are coming soon.
  • The show occurs LIVE in Nashville next Tuesday October 15TH.
  • It airs on TBN the following Sunday October 20TH at 8 PM EDT.
  • I’ll be live-tweeting during the entire telecast !

Overcomer

This past Labor Day Monday I saw “Overcomer” at my local movie theatre. There were about 5 or 6 of us in the theatre, and I think that we all laughed, cheered, and teared-up at the same time. (I didn’t watch what others were doing, but I could hear them.)

This was a wonderful movie. I loved it from start to finish. I highly recommend it for believers and not-yet-believers of Christ alike. If you’re a not-yet-believer of Christ then go in with an open mind and a soft heart. You could walk out of that theatre the same person as you walked in, or the movie could change your life forever. God can use a movie to rescue and save you from the pit of despair – out of the mud and the mire.

Post-movie back at home I decided to do what was suggested in the movie – and that is to read Ephesians 1 & 2 – and study it – and understand it – and apply it to my eternal relationship with Christ. It’s also inspired me to write a brand new sermon based on Ephesians 1. I hope to preach it to my church family soon.

All praise to God – the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ – who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. (Ephesians 1:3 NLT)

Box Office Summer

IN A YEAR – when I’ll see less movies at the box office than any previous year since 2010 – I’ve actually seen 5 movies this summer (up from 4 last summer). In previous years I’ve seen 8 movies (2017), 9 movies (2016), 12 movies (2015), and 14 movies (2014) during the summer months (June, July, and August). Clearly I’ve been too busy seeing and doing other things this summer (and last summer) than spending time in movie theatres.

This summer I saw (in order) “Ma“, “Crawl“, “Spider-Man: Far From Home“, “Yesterday“, and “The Art Of Racing In The Rain“.

IN A WORD – I can describe each movie respectively as – creepy, campy, cool, creative, and captivating. I rated all of them (aside from “Crawl”) as 4 stars (“A+”, “A”, or “A-“). “Crawl” was a bit too campy for me. Campy can be good, but this one just didn’t try hard enough. It was also utterly unrealistic.

I plan to add a 6TH movie to my list this Friday. I plan to see the current faith-based movie “Overcomer” – which is surprising pundits with its box office success thus far (over $10 million). I’m looking forward to its encouragement and inspiration at the box office. I’ll write about it this weekend on my “Sunday Scripture” blog post.
