Sunday Scripture

On Sunday May 07TH 2017 I preached my 4TH sermon to my church family. It was titled “Testify & Preach”.

Here’s an excerpt of it that I’ve updated and enhanced 3 years later:

John Chapter 15 Verse 27, and this final verse (of this Chapter) is so critical. This is what it all leads up to. This is what it’s all about – as the branches of the vine that is Our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ – through the love of God and the hate of the world – as God’s arms, hands, legs, and feet in this world:

You must testify about Me – because you have been with Me from the beginning.

John 15-27

Merriam-Webster defines “testify” in this way:
– to make a statement based on personal knowledge or belief; to bear witness
– to serve as evidence or proof
– to express a personal conviction

YES ! – I will always testify on what I know – on what I believe – is the Truth.

We all need to testify.

“But Chris I’m not qualified to testify. I’m new at this. I’ve done many bad things in my life. I don’t know what to say. I don’t talk good. I’m shy. I have stage fright. I’m scared of the spotlight. I don’t have credentials. I don’t have a seminary degree.”

Let me tell you this. Everyone who believes, and follows, and trusts, and obeys, and loves God is qualified and obligated to testify. It doesn’t matter if your dad was a Preacher and you grew up in a Christian family, or if you’re the only one who’s been saved in your immediate family. It doesn’t matter if you were saved 10 years ago, or 10 months ago, or 10 weeks ago, or 10 days ago, or even 10 minutes ago. If you call on Christ as your Lord & Savior then you must testify and preach !

Someone once described my teaching – now preaching style – as a series of personal testimonies interconnected by Bible verses. OK – I’ll take that. It’s what I know how to do. I read the Bible. I learn something new every time I read the Truth. I try to understand everything I read. Sometimes I don’t understand – so I keep reading until I do. I try to apply what I’ve read to my own personal journey of the past nearly 14 years. I put my thoughts to written words on my home computer as best as I can. Those written words eventually form a lesson plan or a sermon based on a title, a theme, or a subject matter. Sometimes I’m writing several sermons simultaneously. I have a collection of sermons that I’ve written over the past 4 years. I update and enhance them on a regular basis, and then when I’m called upon to do so I determine which sermon is the most relevant at this time to preach on. I ask God which sermon are you going to place on my heart to “Testify & Preach”.

So I’m testifying on what I’ve lived – on what I’ve experienced – and I’m teaching and proclaiming – I’m preaching – on what the Bible tells me so about those life experiences. God gives me the right words at the right time through the Spirit.

My Top 5 Hits RETRO – 1990

Every 2ND, 3RD, and 4TH Friday of the month I post the Top 5 of one of my classic hit music charts based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay from either 15, 20, or 30 years ago this weekend (rotating each week).

It’s the 4TH Friday of the month, so I go back 30 years ago. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday April 22ND 1990:

  1. “Get Up ! (Before The Night Is Over)” – Technotronic Ft. Ya Kid K
  2. “Dangerous” – Roxette
  3. “Roam” – The B-52s
  4. “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love” – Jane Child
  5. “This Old Heart Of Mine” – Rod Stewart & Ronald Isley

What a jam that was 30 years ago – and it still is today. Imagine a young almost 23-year-old version of me dancing to that jam at the hottest clubs of South Florida in 1990. It’s still in heavy rotation on my iPod Shuffles. I can’t keep still in my chair when I hear it at almost 53 years old. It’s aged quite well over the past 30 years. (It’s aged better than me.)

The Eurodance era of the 1990s was my favorite era of music (by far) prior to salvation in Christ. Many credit “Gonna Make You Sweat” from C + C Music Factory in kickstarting the nearly decade-long pop radio era in 1991, but Technotronic was getting the world to dance with hip hop treats and house beats some two years earlier. They stormed the world with two back-to-back mammoth hits – starting with “Pump Up The Jam” in 1989 and continuing with “Get Up ! …” in 1990.

It’s halftime my friends. I’ll be back on Sunday and Monday with 2 more blog posts for this weekend. Enjoy your Saturday. Thanks for going RETRO with me !

Work At Home; Walk Near Home

I’m nearing the end of Week 5 of working at home (out of my kitchen). The commute from my master bedroom to my “desk” (kitchen table) is right at about 6 seconds.

I actually drove to my actual workplace for the 2ND Monday morning in a row this past Monday, and I spent over 5 hours there trying to work as normal of a traditional work day as possible. I plan to do it again this upcoming Monday !  Maybe in May I’ll expand to Thursdays as well at my actual workplace.

I still don’t miss the traffic between here and there. My workplace is about 5 miles away as the crow flies, but it’s currently a rough and tough 9½ miles away by road (due to road detours). On a really good day it can take 20 minutes to get between home and work. On a bad day – 40 minutes or more.

Meanwhile my walking (for exercise) has intensified recently. Between March 22ND and April 22ND (a full month) I walked on 9 mornings at dawn. My start times were as follows:  0715, 0709, 0707, 0706, 0705, 0701, 0703, 0658, and 0650. (Dawn is starting earlier each morning.) I’ve walked a total of 13.09 miles. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic I had only walked 3 times this season (once in December, January, and February) for a total of 8.50 miles. Those 3 walks were at the walking / jogging track at the (currently closed) city park down the road from my neighborhood.

This is Season 13 of my fitness program (also known as “The Major’s Walk-A-Thon”). It’s my busiest season since Season 10 (2016-2017), and it’s my 5TH-busiest season ever.

I probably have a few more walks to go before this season ends (due to unbearable weather conditions). Here in South Florida we have a 5-month rainy season that runs from the middle of May through the middle of October. We receive over 70% of our annual rainfall during those 5 months. That’s about 4 feet of rain in 5 months. Additionally minimum temperatures at dawn generally hover between 77°F and 83°F with relative humidity at or just below 100%. Did I mention all of the bugs (many of which bite) that love that moisture ?

Yeah Season 13 is nearing its end, but Season 14 shall commence later this year once a new dry season takes hold here in South Florida.

“The Major’s Walk-A-Thon” is dedicated to my dad – William L. Day – who lost the ability to walk on his own in 2006 due to the crippling effects of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The disease would take his life less than 4 years later. 54 years ago today – April 23RD 1966 – he and my mom got married in the Philippines.

My Top 10 Hits – Week 166

Every Monday I post my all-new Top 10 Christian hit music chart based on personal preference and influenced by radio airplay. It’s the continuation of a weekly hobby that goes back 40+ years. Here it is – for the week ending Sunday April 19TH 2020:

  1. “Almost Home” – MercyMe [# 1 last week / 18TH week on chart]
  2. “Alive And Breathing” – Matt Maher [2 / 6TH]
  3. “I Will Fear No More” – The Afters [3 / 13TH]
  4. “(I’ll) Never Let You Down” – Hawk Nelson Ft. Hunter & Tara [4 / 4TH]
  5. “See A Victory” – Elevation Worship [5 / 11TH]
  6. “Your Name Is Power” – Rend Collective [7 / 15TH]
  7. “The God Who Stays” – Matthew West [9 / 22ND]
  8. “Waymaker” – Michael W. Smith Ft. Vanessa Campagna [10 / 13TH]
  9. “Amen” – Micah Tyler [6 / 9TH]
  10. “Keep Me In The Moment” – Jeremy Camp [- / 1ST]

# 1 This Week In:
2019 – “Greatness Of Our God” – Newsboys
2018 – “Freedom Hymn” – Austin French
2017 – “Even If” – MercyMe

No change at the top – or in the Top 5. All of the action is in the bottom-half of my Top 10 as several long-running songs actually ease back up a notch or two.

Jeremy Camp is back with his follow-up to my # 1 smash “Dead Man Walking”. It’s his 4TH hit since 2017, and he joins The Afters, Hawk Nelson, and Michael W. Smith as current artists who were on my chart during previous eras. Jeremy made his debut on my chart in November 2006 with “Tonight”.

I’ve seen Jeremy LIVE in concert 4 times now (since 2015) – including twice in 2020 alone !  He puts on a solid set of his hits past and present, and I love his story as told in the recent movie “I Still Believe”.

I also love his new hit. Check out his official music video:

This concludes another weekend of blog posts. I’ll do it again this upcoming weekend – with 4 new entries on Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. I don’t blog on Saturdays. That’s my day of rest.

Your likes, follows, and comments are always appreciated. Thank You for being part of my online ministry to share God’s Good News and win souls for Christ through His music. I’m also on Twitter and Flickr.

Be blessed my friends !  May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
