This weekend I’m flashing back 18 years ago to the Spring of 1992. Back then “The Silence Of The Lambs” won Best Picture honours at the Oscars, Microsoft Windows 3.1 was released – quickly becoming the most successful and most utilized computer software platform in the world, Disneyland opened in Paris France, and six days of riots overtook L.A. following the Rodney King verdict.
Back home in Homestead Florida a nearly 25-year-old USAF SGT Chris M. Day (that’s me) was enjoying the final year of his active duty military career – living and playing in Dormitory Building 675 on the original Homestead Air Force Base and working as a Computer Database Manager in a building just off the active flightline and famed Bikini Boulevard. Just a few months later the beautiful base would be destroyed by the wrath of Hurricane Andrew.
On the radio The KLF were rockin’ the acid house nation with their unique brand of European HI-NRG dance music. In 1991 they scored a long-running TOP 5 megasmash here stateside with “3 A.M. Eternal”. They followed that up with the sleeper hit “What Time Is Love ?” – and then came this GINORMOUS smash featuring country music legend Tammy Wynette. This past week marked the 12TH anniversary of her passing. Here she is – standing by the jams.

– Let’s do this thing called the ‘Thursday Night Mini Thoughts’.
– These are my totally spontaneous thoughts at this time and in this space.
– Last night I found a couple of light bathroom items moved around.
– Right after that I heard a strange moving sound in my master bedroom.
– I didn’t know what it was, but I was looking for it.
– I decided that I had totally imagined the strange moving sound.
– I went back to my bathroom to brush my teeth.
– I brush my teeth nightly.
– Everyone should do that for a cleaner and healthier smile.
– Everyone should also bathe first thing in the morning.
– Cologne and perfume should be used after bathing – not in lieu of it.
– But anyway – but anyway – are ya ready for this – are ya ready for this.
– I’m sitting right here at my computer workstation after brushing my teeth.
– Suddenly I hear the vertical blinds behind me get tussled.
– I look down – and I see a little baby frog (or toad) down there.
– Everything made sense after that.
– I grabbed the frog and threw it out the front door.
– That’s what he gets for breaking in to my home and making me wonder.
– May he live happily ever after – outside.
– I think that’s the first frog that I’ve ever found in my home in nearly 15 years.
– This morning I seriously considered scheduling a Dr. Appt. for tomorrow.
– I looked up the symptoms of strep throat, but I ruled that out.
– This was one of the most painful sore throats I’ve felt in awhile.
– It’s slowly subsiding now, but now I have other cold symptoms.
– My eyes hurt, and in fact my whole face hurts.
– I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.
– My buddy Cold-EEZE is supporting me through this ordeal.
– I refuse to take cold medications.
– They do more damage than good.
– I prefer homeopathic remedies.
– Americans are hooked on drugs, and I prefer to be an outlier.
– I’ve got Life Group tonight – which I’m looking forward to (as always).
– Tomorrow is a non-blogging day.
– It’s also a self-imposed day off for me.
– That’s right – the weekend has already started for me !
– This Saturday night on the ‘Retro’ I’m rockin’ The KLF from 1992.
– Then on Sunday it’s ‘My Fantastic Journey’ on its new day.

I.Longhorn Steakhouse / Olive Garden / Red Lobster – Just a few years ago who would have ever thought that all three of these fine dining establishments would be open for business right here in our historic city of Homestead Florida – and right next to each other ! Here’s a personal progress report of the trio thus far. Working backwards from last opened to first opened – I have not yet made it into Red Lobster. In fact I think it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve set foot in any Red Lobster. I know that I’ll love the food there, but I think that I’ll wait until after the crowds die down a bit. As far as Olive Garden is concerned I’ve been there perhaps a half a dozen times. In my own humble opinion the food is overrated, and the service is consistently subpar. I would rather eat Italian food at either Portofino or Mamma Mia – and I frequently do – far more so than Olive Garden. And that brings us to my new home away from home – Longhorn Steakhouse – where I’m a regular – and I’m welcomed back week after week after week. It’s my Lunchtime getaway. I think I’ve eaten there about 15 to 20 times since they’ve been open (not that I’m actually keeping track of it or anything like that). I’ve never walked away from there unhappy. The food has always been totally awesome dude, and the service has always been very good, excellent, or even outstanding. I ate Lunch there yesterday (Monday), and I’ll be back again next week. I’ll take the 8-ounce Renegade Top Sirloin !
II.Health Care – I know next to nothing about the specifics of the health care debate and subsequent bill that was recently signed into law. I just didn’t really follow it or study it much, and apparently much of America didn’t either. I’d even venture to state that much of the U.S. Congress didn’t study it much as well. All of the Republicans said “NO” to it, and most of the Democrats said “YES” to it. That says a lot right there. I can’t form an opinion on it at this time. I’ll have to wait and see after-the-fact whether or not it was a good bill to sign or not based on how it personally affects me a few years from now. Here’s what I do know. I have excellent health care courtesy of my U.S. Government job. I pay a little over $80 for it every two weeks (about $2,100 per year). I have an active prescription for Lipitor. It costs $25.08 for a 30-day supply. My health care plan allegedly saves me $94.87, so without it I assume I would pay $119.95 for the Lipitor every month. My health care plan allegedly saves me about 79% off the total cost of the Lipitor. I dig that, but will all of those costs remain the same in the future, or will they go up ? Someone has to pay for this trillion-dollar-plus health care bill, and that someone is me and you with jobs.
III.Springfield Massachusetts – As part of my ‘Vacation Of The Month Club’ that I’ve ambitiously instituted – fresh and new for 2010 – I’m proud to announce that my June vacation will be to South Central Mass. I’ll actually be setting foot in two U.S. states for the first time ever – Massachusetts and Connecticut. (I’m flying in to the Hartford area.) But I must be 100% completely honest here. This proposed 5-day trip is work-related, as I will be visiting the operations at Westover Air Reserve Base there – one of our sister bases. It’ll be a lot of fun checking out the surrounding area – especially in June. (I know how cold it gets up there for 6 months out of the year.)
This concludes this weekly edition of the ‘Grab Bag’. “My Fantastic Journey” is making the big move from its longtime successful Wednesday night perch over to Sunday afternoons, so the next time I blog will be on Thursday night when I bring you about 40 ‘Mini Thoughts’. – It’s 9:54 PM EDT here on the U.S. East Coast as I begin compiling this.
– This easily makes it the latest edition EVER of the ‘Mini Thoughts’.
– I wanted to try something a little bit different this week.
– I wanted to compile this from a different time perspective.
– 10 PM at night is much different than 4 PM in the afternoon.
– My work day is done at 4 PM, but I’m just getting started at home.
– My entire day is virtually done at 10 PM, so I can look back at it.
– God performed yet more miracles for me at work.
– Some of them I noticed right away, and some of them were ‘God-Winks’.
– God keeps everything exciting for me in this 44TH month of my journey.
– It’s a fantastic journey that’s a winding road with dangerous curves.
– I try not to get too close to the edges.
– The enemy is anxiously waiting all along both sides of the journey.
– Today was an abnormally busy day at work in a strange way.
– It was weird how the events played out, but I was a player.
– After work I ventured over to Publix – where shopping is a pleasure.
– It’s my favourite store in the entire world.
– That’s because eating food is one of my favourite hobbies.
– If this U.S. Government thing doesn’t work out for me then I’m goin’ to Publix.
– The’re always hiring.
– I’ve heard that their work benefits are some of the best in the industry.
– I finally got home shortly before 5 PM EDT.
– That gave me about two hours to chill before heading over to Life Group.
– I was at Life Group for nearly 2½-hours.
– The time flew by as we studied His Good News – His Truth.
– So as you can see it’s been a rather hectic Thursday out and about.
– This is a Life that’s far different (and radical) than it was before Christ.
– Before I was rescued and saved 43 months ago I lived a different life.
– I really believe that if I had continued on with that life I wouldn’t be here now.
– God saved my life.
– Actually I died from my first life and He granted me a new Life.
– God took the dead man out of me.
– As Good Friday approaches in less than an hour I honour Him.
– I honour Jesus Christ for giving it all up so that I could live.
– I honour Him for dying on that bloody hunk of wood.
– I owe Him the rest of my Life for what He did for me.
– Tomorrow night I’m hangin’ out with my brothers and sisters.
– We’re having a special Good Friday service down in The Keys.
– I’m looking forward to celebrating Life with my church family.
– As a result I’m taking the night off from blogging.
– I’ll be back on here on Saturday night with your ‘Retro’ for the week.
